Chapter 13:Dancing Under the Stars.

1162 Words
The snow continued to fall, blanketing Everbrook in a soft, quiet white. It was the kind of evening that felt like something out of a dream—peaceful, magical, and full of unspoken promises. The town had transformed for the Valentine’s Festival, with the streets lined with twinkling lights and the scent of roasted chestnuts wafting in the air. Despite herself, Scarlett couldn’t help but be swept up in the beauty of it all. Noah had been by her side for most of the day, and although she’d tried to resist, there was no denying that his presence had begun to feel… natural. The easy banter between them had evolved into something subtler, something quieter. It was as if they were starting to understand each other without needing to say much at all. Tonight was the highlight of the festival—a grand dance held in the town square beneath the stars. Scarlett wasn’t sure what she was expecting, but she wasn’t prepared for the spectacle that awaited her. The square had been transformed into an open-air ballroom, with a huge canopy of twinkling fairy lights overhead. A live band played soft melodies in the background, their music floating on the cold night air. The townspeople moved gracefully across the ice, twirling in couples, their laughter mixing with the music and creating a warm, almost intimate atmosphere. “You look surprised,” Noah’s voice broke through her thoughts. He was standing beside her, his eyes scanning the crowd. “I didn’t expect it to be like this,” Scarlett admitted, her gaze taking in the dancing couples, the soft glow of the lights, the warmth of the gathering. “It’s… kind of magical.” He smiled, a small, knowing smile. “Everbrook’s full of surprises. You’ve only scratched the surface.” Scarlett felt a flutter of unease at his words, but she quickly shoved it aside. She wasn’t here to think too hard about it. The whole town had been telling her she’d fall in love with it—and maybe, just maybe, they were right. The festive atmosphere was infectious, and for the first time since arriving, Scarlett felt like she was actually part of something. Noah took a step toward her, his expression suddenly serious. “You going to stand there all night, or are you going to join the dance?” Scarlett hesitated, glancing at the couples gracefully gliding across the ice. “I’m not much of a dancer,” she said, shaking her head. “I’ll just watch.” “No one’s watching you, Hayes,” Noah said with a teasing glint in his eyes. “And besides, I’m sure you’re better than you think.” She shot him a skeptical look, but before she could protest, he grabbed her hand and led her into the crowd. The moment her hand touched his, she felt a strange, warm rush through her—something she couldn’t explain. Her heart skipped a beat, but she pushed the feeling down. “You’re really pushing your luck, Carter,” Scarlett said, trying to mask the sudden nerves bubbling up inside her. “Come on, I’m a great teacher,” Noah said with a wink, his voice full of confidence. “Just follow my lead, and you’ll be fine.” Scarlett rolled her eyes, but there was no stopping him now. They moved into the center of the dance floor, where the music swirled around them. Noah took her hand and placed the other gently on her waist, guiding her into a slow, fluid motion. His presence was commanding, yet effortless, and despite herself, Scarlett found herself following his lead, her body moving in time with the music. “Relax,” Noah murmured, his voice low and steady. “It’s just a dance.” But it wasn’t just a dance. It was more than that. It was the way his hand rested lightly on her waist, the way their bodies seemed to fit together in perfect harmony, even as they moved across the ice. It was the way he looked at her—like she was the only person in the world, like nothing else mattered in this moment but the two of them. Scarlett swallowed, suddenly aware of how close they were, how the simple act of dancing felt so intimate. She glanced up at him, catching his gaze for just a moment. His eyes softened, and there was something in them that made her heart skip again. Was it admiration? Attraction? She wasn’t sure, but there was no denying the pull between them. “You’re doing great,” Noah said, his voice full of encouragement. His hand gently guided her, his touch steady and warm. Scarlett found herself smiling, despite her best efforts to resist. “You sure know how to flatter a girl.” Noah’s lips curved into a sly grin. “I’m not flattering you. I’m being honest.” Her smile faltered for a moment as a rush of uncertainty washed over her. She’d never been one to let someone get this close, to let her guard down this much. But there was something about Noah—something that made it impossible to push him away. As they moved around the rink, Scarlett let herself be carried away by the music, by the warmth of the town, and by the undeniable chemistry between her and Noah. The world around them seemed to fade into the background, the only thing that mattered was the two of them, moving together beneath the stars, in perfect sync. For a moment, Scarlett forgot about her doubts, her reservations, and just allowed herself to enjoy the dance. When the song ended, Noah didn’t immediately let go of her. Instead, he looked down at her, his expression unreadable. “You’re not so bad at this, Hayes.” Scarlett was about to retort when she noticed the way he was looking at her—his eyes dark, full of something that made her heart race. For the briefest of moments, she thought he might lean in, might kiss her right then and there. But before she could process the thought, Noah stepped back, breaking the tension between them. “We should probably get some air,” he said, his voice a little too casual. Scarlett nodded, trying to steady her breathing. “Yeah. That sounds good.” They walked off the rink together, their steps falling in time with the fading notes of the music. The night was still and quiet, the only sound the soft crunch of snow beneath their feet. But between them, something had changed. The dance had drawn them closer, had made something shift—something neither of them was willing to name yet, but both of them could feel. As they stood together, looking out over the town, Scarlett realized she wasn’t just starting to fall for the town of Everbrook. Maybe, just maybe, she was falling for Noah Carter, too.
