Chapter 4: The Setup
Cynthia was beginning to feel the weight of everything closing in. The letter to Stephen had been sent, her silence broken—and while her heart felt a strange flutter, her instincts were screaming.
Something was wrong.
Something was coming.
And it started the next morning.
She stepped into class and instantly felt the shift. Eyes followed her. Murmurs floated in the air like smoke. Some students turned away when she looked in their direction. Others stared with mocking smiles.
Cynthia paused beside Grace’s seat.
Cynthia: “Grace… what’s going on?”
Grace (wide-eyed): “Babe… you never hear?”
Cynthia:“Hear what?”
Grace (lowering her voice):“They say... you dey sleep with Stephen.”
Cynthia froze.
Cynthia: “What?! From where?!”
Grace: “I swear I no know who start am, but gist don spread. Some even say you sneaked out of school last night to meet him.”
Cynthia sank into her seat, the room spinning around her. How could the story spread so fast? It had only been one letter!
Before she could process it, the Labour Prefect walked into the class with her girls behind her—like wolves sniffing blood.
She stopped at Cynthia’s desk.
Labour (mocking): “Our celebrity girl. Hot babe. Hope the boys are treating you well?”
The girls around her chuckled cruelly.
Cynthia’s lips trembled, but she stayed silent.
Labour: “Don’t worry. Teachers go soon to hear everything. Let’s see how long you last in this school.”
And just like that, they walked out—mission complete.
Grace leaned closer.
Grace: “They’re framing you.”
Cynthia (whispers):“I know. And if I don’t clear my name… I’m finished.”
Meanwhile, in Government College, Stephen sat on the steps behind his hostel, reading Cynthia’s reply over and over.
Stephen (to himself): “She replied. She actually replied...”
Just then, Ambrose and Caleb strolled over, bottles of Coke in hand.
Ambrose: “Guy, na love dey do you so?”
Stephen (smiling):“I’m telling you. She wants to talk.”
Caleb: “Better eyes attention that you’ve been exchanging romantic letters with boys.”
Cynthia (shocked): “What?! Who said that?”
Teacher 2: “That’s not the point. The boy confirmed it himself. He came to school with his friends and admitted you wrote to him.”
Cynthia blinked hard. Stephen came? Why? Did they trick him?
Teacher 3:“We’ve also found a phone in your hostel—hidden under your pillow. Does it belong to you?”
Cynthia:“What? No! I don’t even have a phone!”
But the teachers weren’t listening.
Teacher 1: “We’re suspending you for a week, pending full investigation.”
Cynthia (desperate):“It’s not true! I’m being framed!”
Teacher 2: “Enough. Leave.”
Cynthia walked out of the office as if the ground beneath her had vanished. Her legs felt like jelly.
Grace met her outside, already in tears.
Grace:“They planted the phone. I saw one of the senior girls sneaking into our hostel this morning before assembly.”
Cynthia’s eyes filled with rage.
Cynthia:“They’re trying to destroy me completely.”
Grace: “What are you going to do?”
Cynthia stared into the distance, her voice steady but cold.
Cynthia: “Fight back. But not like them. I’m going to expose everything.”
That night, while everyone was asleep, Cynthia crept into the staff quarters section—toward Mrs. Juliet’s window.
She tapped twice.
Mrs. Juliet pulled the curtain, shocked.
Mrs. Juliet: “Cynthia?! What are you doing here?! You want to get expelled?!”
Cynthia (whispers): “They framed me. Please… I need help. And I need proof.”
Cynthia then told her everything—the threats, the fake rumors, the planted phone.
Mrs. Juliet’s eyes darkened.
Mrs. Juliet: “Come inside. We’re going to fix this.”
The next day, unknown to the Labour Prefect and her crew, a hidden recorder sat on the teacher’s table in the empty classroom where they usually met.
Courtesy of Mrs. Juliet.
And what did they record that day?
Enough to burn the entire system down.
