The front office of the school was too bright, too clean, badly pretending to be welcoming. Plastic plants in corners and on desks with a film layer of dust on the leaves. A bowl of mints that looks like nobody ever touches, especially students. The receptionist’s keyboard clacked away, a steady click that sawed at my nerves. “Have a seat my dear,” the elderly woman said to me without looking away from her screen. “They’ll be with you in a moment.” They? Who? Other than the principal… Headmaster? Whatever the title he went by, other than him, who else would be joining? Why exactly was I even called up here for?
