THE SECRET BETWEEN US Chapter 2 — The Assignment The elevator doors closed. Adrian remained standing in the hallway, staring at the place where Ethan had disappeared. "Why me?" Mia looked at him. "What did you say?" Adrian shook his head. "Nothing." He gathered his laptop and portfolio. Mia smiled. "Don't worry. You'll get used to him." "That's exactly what I'm worried about." She laughed. "Mr. Reyes is strict, but he's not a bad person." Adrian remembered the coffee shop. "He has a strange way of showing it." Before Mia could respond, Adrian's phone vibrated. A new email appeared. FROM: ETHAN REYES SUBJECT: PROJECT ASSIGNMENT Adrian opened it. «Adrian Santos, Report to my office tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. Bring your proposed revisions and project timeline. — Ethan Reyes» Adrian stared at the screen. "Tomorrow?" Mia looked over his shoulder. "Looks like you've got homework." Adrian sighed. "He's unbelievable." --- The next morning, Adrian arrived at the office at exactly 7:55 a.m. He had spent most of the night working on the presentation. His eyes were tired, but he refused to complain. He walked toward Ethan's office and knocked. "Come in." Adrian opened the door. Ethan was standing near the window, holding a cup of coffee. For a moment, neither spoke. Adrian noticed something. Ethan wasn't wearing a tie. It was the first time he had seen him looking less formal. "You wanted to see me?" Ethan turned. "You're five minutes early." "I thought you'd complain if I was late." Ethan's lips moved slightly. It wasn't quite a smile. "Sit." Adrian sat across from him. He opened his laptop. "I revised the concept based on your comments yesterday." Ethan sat opposite him. "Show me." Adrian began explaining. He talked about the new visual identity, the emotional direction, and the story behind the brand. Ethan listened carefully. Unlike yesterday, he didn't interrupt. When Adrian finished, Ethan looked at the screen. "This is better." Adrian smiled. "Thank you." "But it's still missing something." Adrian's smile disappeared. "Again?" Ethan looked at him. "You asked for my opinion." "I didn't ask for another mystery." Ethan raised an eyebrow. Adrian immediately realized what he had said. "Sorry." Ethan leaned back. "You don't have to apologize every time you disagree with me." Adrian looked surprised. "You seemed like the type who expects everyone to agree with you." "I don't." "Really?" "No." "Then why do you look angry all the time?" Silence. Adrian immediately regretted asking. Ethan stared at him. Then, unexpectedly, he laughed. It was quiet and brief. But it was a genuine laugh. Adrian stared. "You can laugh." Ethan's expression returned to normal. "Of course." "I thought you forgot how." Ethan looked at him for several seconds. "You're very comfortable around me." Adrian shrugged. "I'm trying to be professional." "Is that what you call this?" Adrian smiled. "Maybe." For the first time, the atmosphere between them felt different. Less hostile. Almost comfortable. Then Ethan's phone rang. He answered immediately. "Yes?" His expression changed. Adrian couldn't hear the other person, but Ethan's face became serious. "I said I don't want him contacting me again." A pause. "No. I don't care what he wants." Another pause. Ethan stood. "Do not bring Daniel's name into this office again." He ended the call. Adrian looked away. He didn't want to pry. But Ethan noticed. "You heard that?" "Only your side." "Forget it." Adrian nodded. "Okay." Ethan looked at him. "You don't have to look so worried." "I'm not worried." "You are." "I'm just curious." "Curiosity can be dangerous." Adrian smiled. "So can being mysterious." Their eyes met. For a few seconds, neither moved. Then Adrian looked away first. "Anyway, I should get back to work." Ethan nodded. "There's a meeting at three." "I'll be there." "Good." Adrian stood. He reached the door. "Adrian." He turned. "Yes?" Ethan hesitated. "Good work." Adrian smiled. "Thanks." He left. Ethan watched the door close. Then he leaned back in his chair. He didn't understand why Adrian's smile stayed in his mind. --- At lunchtime, Adrian sat with his coworkers. Lucas, one of the company's marketing associates, dropped into the chair beside him. "So?" Adrian looked up. "So what?" "How was your meeting with the boss?" Adrian sighed. "Long." Lucas laughed. "He's terrifying." "Exactly." "Did he yell at you?" "No." "Did he threaten you?" "No." "Did he fire you?" "No." Lucas smiled. "Then it went well." Adrian laughed. "Maybe." Lucas studied him. "You're smiling." "I'm not." "You are." Adrian looked away. "I just remembered something funny." Lucas leaned closer. "About Ethan?" Adrian almost choked on his drink. "What?" "You like him." "What? No!" Lucas laughed. "I'm joking." Adrian rolled his eyes. "Don't say things like that." "Why?" "Because it's ridiculous." Lucas smiled. "Sure." Across the cafeteria, Ethan happened to walk past. He stopped when he saw Adrian laughing with Lucas. His expression became unreadable. Marcus, walking behind him, noticed. "Sir?" Ethan continued walking. "What?" "Nothing." But Ethan glanced back. Adrian was still laughing. For reasons he couldn't explain, Ethan didn't like seeing it. --- That afternoon, Adrian was working alone in the conference room when Ethan entered. "Everyone has left." Adrian looked at the clock. It was almost eight. "I didn't realize." "You should go home." "I want to finish this." "You've been working since seven this morning." "I'm almost done." Ethan walked closer. "That's an order." Adrian looked up. "You always give orders?" "Usually." Adrian smiled. "Well, I'm ignoring this one." Ethan stared at him. "You don't listen." "Not when you're wrong." Ethan shook his head. "You're impossible." "Thank you." "That wasn't a compliment." "I'll take it anyway." Ethan almost smiled again. He looked at Adrian's laptop. "Show me what you're working on." Adrian moved aside. Ethan stood beside him. Their shoulders nearly touched. Adrian suddenly became aware of how close they were. He could smell Ethan's cologne. Clean. Subtle. Warm. Adrian's fingers stopped moving. Ethan noticed. "What's wrong?" "Nothing." "You stopped." "I forgot what I was doing." Ethan looked at him. "For once, I understand." Adrian looked up. Their faces were only inches apart. The room suddenly felt quiet. Neither moved. Neither spoke. Then Adrian's phone rang. They both stepped back. Adrian answered quickly. "Hello?" It was his mother. He smiled. "Yes, Mom. I'm still at work." Ethan quietly walked toward the door. Adrian watched him leave. For some reason, he felt disappointed. --- Later that night, Ethan sat alone in his car. He looked at his phone. There was a message from Marcus. I found information about Adrian Santos. Ethan stared at the message. Then another appeared. Should I send it to you? Ethan hesitated. He had asked Marcus to find out who Adrian was. But now he wasn't sure he wanted to know. Finally, he replied: Yes. A file arrived. Ethan opened it. Adrian Santos. Twenty-five years old. Graphic designer. Single. Family background. Education. Employment history. Ethan scrolled through the information. Then he stopped. One detail caught his attention. Adrian's father had once worked for a company connected to Ethan's family. Ethan's expression changed. He read the information again. That couldn't be a coincidence. He opened another file. A photograph appeared. A much younger Ethan stood beside his father. Behind them was a man Ethan recognized immediately. Adrian's father. Ethan slowly lowered the phone. Suddenly, his first meeting with Adrian didn't feel accidental anymore. There was a connection. A connection that had existed long before the coffee shop. And if Adrian discovered it, everything could change. Ethan looked through the windshield at the empty road. For the first time, he asked himself a question he had been avoiding since the day they met. Who exactly is Adrian Santos? And why did it feel like fate had brought him back into Ethan's life for a reason? TO BE CONTINUED...
