Chapter 18

Night settled heavily over Blackwood Valley. The Ironclaw wolves remained at the edge of the clearing while Blackwood warriors guarded the inner valley. No one trusted the fragile calm between the two packs. Inside the council lodge Kael and Ronan stood on opposite sides of the long wooden table. “The Moonborn stays here,” Kael said firmly. Ronan leaned back slightly, his posture relaxed but his eyes sharp. “You don’t get to decide that alone.” Eira watched the two Alphas carefully, her expression thoughtful. “The prophecy concerns more than one pack,” Ronan continued. “That doesn’t give you the right to take her,” Kael replied. Ronan smirked faintly. “I don’t plan to take her.” His gaze shifted toward the doorway. “I plan to convince her.” At that moment Lena stepped into the lodge. The conversation stopped immediately. Ronan studied her with open curiosity. “You don’t look very dangerous,” he said. Lena crossed her arms. “You don’t look very trustworthy.” Several wolves chuckled quietly. Ronan smiled. “Fair enough.” His expression soon grew serious. “Selene isn’t the only one searching for you.” Lena frowned. “What does that mean?” Ronan looked toward the dark mountains beyond the valley. “There are others who want the Moonborn.” Thunder rolled faintly across the distant peaks. And somewhere far away, something ancient had begun to awaken.
