Brianna was in “the zone” working and listening to U2 on the radio. She had almost gotten through all her accounts, and it was only 11:00. Printouts of her most important account was spread all over her desk; just as she was about to put the finishing touches on them, Mr. Mason popped his head around the cubicle wall like a puppet off of Sesame Street.
“OH!” Brianna jumped. “Mr. Mason, I didn’t hear you coming!”
“Sorry, Ms. Blakely, I just wanted to go around and introduce our new intern. Brianna, meet Hunter Stark, he is going to be helping us out around here. As an intern, he’ll be filling various responsibilities.”
Brianna quickly brushed off the doughnut crumbs from earlier and stood up to greet Mr. Mason and the intern. As she looked up, the most intoxicating cologne wafted into her nostrils. Her eyes traveled from the shiny leather dress shoes, up the sateen finish dark blue suit, midnight black tie to the broad shoulders to the longish brown hair and stopping at beautiful golden amber eyes. Those eyes! It’s like you could get lost in them, Brianna thought.
As she took a step and reached out to shake his hand, time seemed to slow down as Hunter moved toward Brianna. Suddenly Portia appeared and placed her coffee cup in Brianna’s outstretched hand.
“So nice to meet you, Hunter! The name’s Portia, I’ll be honored to show you around!” Portia slid in between Brianna and Hunter like a football player on defense, making an interception. In the process, Portia knocked Brianna off balance, causing her to abruptly sit down in her office chair, and spilling coffee all over the reports on her desk.
“That would be lovely, Portia.” Mr. Mason said. “I have a meeting starting soon, so that works out perfectly!” Mr. Mason, relieved of the intern, quickly heads back to his office.
“Portia! You just ruined my Edgerton account reports with YOUR coffee!” Brianna exclaimed in an angry hushed stage whisper. Never mind the rudeness of interrupting someone else’s conversation. Geez!
“Sorry dear!” Portia said coyly over her shoulder, as she had Hunter by the arm pulling him all around the office.
As she quickly grabbed the paper towel from her doughnut, earlier, Brianna tried to dump off the coffee off her reports and blotted what she could with the paper towel. Stupid witch! Brianna thought. The nerve of her expecting me to do her work, ruining MY work, and being an inconsiderate jerk in the process! RRRRGGGHHH!!!! She growled in exasperation.
After reprinting another copy of her reports and copying her notes into the clean printouts for hours, she looks up to Winnie’s smiling face.
“Ready to go to lunch?” Winnie brightly held up her pink and turquoise Vera Bradley lunch bag.
Brianna reached for her lunch but remembered that during the awful morning she had at home, she hadn’t brought anything. “Yeah, but I’ll have to get something from the cafeteria line. Hope they have something good today,” as she gathered up her badge and water bottle and dug in her purse for some cash.
While waiting for her friend, Winnie whispered, “Did you get a chance to meet the new guy? Mr. Mason sent me the papers to have him start today! I can’t believe that we have an intern that looks like a Greek god walking among us!”
Brianna rolled her eyes, gave a sarcastic chuckle and said “Yeah, sort of. I’ll have to tell you about my morning over lunch. But you’re not wrong…” Bri smiled.
