23On Thursday evening, Kate had her bi-monthly appointment with Giselle Bergrenn, her friend and gynecologist. Dr. Giselle ran a women’s prenatal and family planning services clinic in a classic late Edwardian row house in the Haight Ashbury district. She had a comfortable apartment on the upper levels for the weeks she was in town. She was able to schedule Kate’s appointments in the evenings, and the two usually had supper together upstairs after Kate’s examination and treatment.
