A Promise Between Them

1068 Words
Monday morning brought an unusual calm to the Hart Group. Sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows of Evelyn's office, illuminating sketches spread across her desk and the samples stacked neatly against one wall. For the first time in months, she walked into work without feeling the crushing weight of uncertainty on her shoulders. Nothing had changed financially. The company was still searching for investors. Several projects remained suspended. Suppliers were still waiting for payments. Yet something inside her had shifted. She believed they could survive. Not because Adrian had promised to save the company, but because he had reminded her that difficult seasons didn't last forever. A gentle knock interrupted her thoughts. "Come in." Linda stepped inside carrying her tablet. "Good morning, Miss Hart." "Morning." "You have a visitor." Evelyn frowned. "I don't remember scheduling anyone." "You didn't." "Who is it?" Linda smiled knowingly. "He refused to come upstairs until I asked if you were available." A familiar warmth settled in Evelyn's chest. "Adrian?" Linda nodded. "Should I send him in?" Evelyn tried and failed to hide her smile. "Yes." A few moments later, Adrian walked into the office carrying two takeaway coffee cups and a small paper bag. "I hope I'm not disturbing you." She looked from the coffee to him. "You came all the way here before work?" "I had a meeting nearby." She raised an eyebrow. "Really?" "No." They both laughed. "I wanted to see you." The honesty in his answer caught her completely off guard. He handed her one of the coffee cups. "I remembered your order." She accepted it. "You remember everything." "Only the important things." She took a sip before looking at him in surprise. "It's exactly how I like it." "I asked the café not to make it too sweet." She shook her head with an amused smile. "I don't know whether that's impressive or slightly frightening." "I'm hoping for impressive." "You succeeded." He placed the paper bag on her desk. "And before you ask, it's breakfast." "You brought me breakfast too?" "You skipped it yesterday." Evelyn blinked. "...How do you know that?" "When I called yesterday evening, you said you were finally eating lunch at five." She laughed, covering her face briefly. "So you've decided to monitor my eating habits?" "I've decided to make sure you don't accidentally starve yourself." Her heart did something strange. No grand romantic speech. No expensive gift. Just breakfast. She couldn't remember the last time someone had cared about such ordinary things. "Thank you," she said sincerely. "You're welcome." For a while, they talked about work, architecture, and the charity gala. Adrian admired several of her interior design sketches, asking thoughtful questions about color palettes and lighting instead of pretending to understand. Evelyn found herself explaining ideas with enthusiasm she hadn't felt in weeks. "You really love this," Adrian observed. "I do." "It shows." She smiled. "I've missed feeling excited about it." "You'll get that excitement back." "I hope so." "You will." His certainty made her believe it. Just then, Linda knocked again. "Sorry to interrupt." "It's alright," Evelyn replied. Linda looked slightly uncomfortable. "Miss Montgomery is here." The atmosphere changed instantly. "Vanessa?" Adrian asked. "Yes, sir." "She said she'd like a few minutes." Adrian looked toward Evelyn. "I wasn't expecting this." She offered a reassuring smile. "It's okay." "Would you mind?" "Go ahead." Adrian hesitated before following Linda outside. ... Vanessa stood near the reception area, elegantly dressed as always. "Good morning, Adrian." "What brings you here?" "I wanted to congratulate you." "For what?" She smiled faintly. "The newspapers have been unusually interested in your charity gala." "I see." "They're also interested in the woman who attended with you." His expression remained calm. "Evelyn isn't interested in publicity." "I gathered that." Vanessa folded her arms. "She seems... nice." "She is." "I've never heard you speak about anyone the way you've been speaking about her." Adrian remained silent. After a moment, Vanessa sighed. "I suppose this means the rumors are true." "What rumors?" "That you've finally met someone." He didn't answer. He didn't need to. Vanessa smiled sadly. "You know... our parents spent years trying to convince us we'd make the perfect couple." "I know." "And we both knew they were wrong." "We did." She looked toward Evelyn's office. "Don't lose her." His eyes softened. "I don't intend to." Vanessa nodded. "I believe you." For the first time since she'd appeared at the gala, there wasn't the slightest trace of jealousy in her expression. Only acceptance. "I should go." "Take care, Vanessa." "You too, Adrian." As she walked away, Adrian watched her disappear into the elevator before releasing a quiet breath. One chapter of his life had finally closed. ... When he returned to Evelyn's office, she looked up from her desk. "Everything alright?" "Yes." She studied him for a moment. "You look relieved." "I am." He walked closer before stopping in front of her desk. "Evelyn..." "Yes?" "I've been thinking." She smiled playfully. "That sounds dangerous." He laughed. "It probably is." His expression became serious again. "I know we agreed to take things slowly." "We did." "And I don't want to rush you." She nodded. "But I also don't want you wondering where you stand with me." Her heartbeat quickened. Adrian looked directly into her eyes. "So let me say this clearly." "I am courting you because I genuinely want a future with you." "Not because of the contract." "Not because of our families." "Not because of your company." He smiled gently. "I'm doing this because every day I spend with you makes me want another." Silence filled the office. Evelyn stared at him, her heart pounding louder than she thought possible. No one had ever confessed something so simple... Yet so sincere. A slow smile spread across her face. "I don't know what the future looks like yet." "I know." "But..." She took one step closer. "I'm really glad you walked into my life." Adrian smiled, a smile brighter than any she'd seen before. It wasn't the smile of a billionaire. It wasn't the smile of a successful businessman. It was simply the smile of a man whose feelings had just been returned with hope. And neither of them noticed that, across the street, someone sitting inside a parked black SUV had been watching the entire exchange. The engine started. The vehicle slowly pulled away. Whoever it was... They hadn't come by accident.
