Chapter two :the second witness

796 Words
The bell rang like nothing had changed. Laughter filled the hallway. Chairs scraped. Students rushed out of class like the world was perfectly normal. But for the teenager… nothing felt normal anymore. They walked beside the girl who wasn’t supposed to exist in their routine. “So you’re telling me,” the teenager said quietly, “you’ve been remembering too?” The girl nodded. “Since the first reset I noticed.” “That means there are more of us?” She hesitated. “I don’t know. I’ve only found two so far.” “Two?” “Yes,” she said. “Including you.” ⸻ They stopped near an empty staircase. Away from noise. Away from people who would forget everything tomorrow. The girl leaned against the wall, arms crossed. “I’ve been watching the patterns,” she said. “It’s not a perfect loop.” “I noticed that too,” the teenager replied. “A pen moved differently in class.” The girl’s eyes sharpened. “That’s new.” “Is that bad?” “It means the system is weakening,” she said softly. The word system made the teenager pause. “What system?” The girl looked at them for a long moment before answering. “I don’t know what it is,” she admitted. “But something is controlling the resets.” ⸻ A silence fell between them. Far away, a group of students laughed loudly, completely unaware that their world had already ended and restarted more than once. The teenager swallowed. “Why would anyone reset time like this?” The girl shook her head. “That’s not the real question.” “What is?” Her voice dropped. “Why are we still remembering?” ⸻ The air felt colder suddenly. The teenager looked down at their hands. “At midnight… I saw something.” The girl straightened immediately. “What did you see?” “I don’t know what it was,” they said. “A shadow. It spoke to me.” The girl went still. “That’s impossible,” she whispered. “It said I wasn’t supposed to remember.” The girl stepped closer. “And you’re sure it spoke to you directly?” The teenager nodded. Her expression darkened. “…Then it’s aware of us.” ⸻ Before the teenager could respond, footsteps echoed from the stairs. Someone was coming. They both turned quickly. A boy appeared, slightly out of breath, like he had been running. He stopped when he saw them. “Oh,” he said. “So it’s true.” The girl tensed. “Who are you?” The boy raised his hands slowly. “Relax. I’m not with them.” “‘Them’?” the teenager repeated. He looked around nervously before stepping closer. “I remember too,” he said. ⸻ The teenager felt their chest tighten. Another one. The girl didn’t look surprised—but she looked cautious. “How long?” she asked the boy. “Three resets,” he replied. The girl nodded slightly. “Same as me.” The teenager frowned. “Wait… you’ve been awake longer than me?” The girl glanced at them. “Yes.” The boy leaned against the railing. “I’ve been trying to find others, but most people reset differently. Some don’t remember anything at all.” “Why only us?” the teenager asked. No one answered immediately. Because none of them knew. ⸻ Then the boy spoke again. “There’s something else.” Both of them looked at him. “I tried something last reset,” he said slowly. The girl narrowed her eyes. “What did you do?” “I stayed awake past midnight.” The air changed instantly. The teenager stepped back. “You can’t do that.” “I didn’t have a choice,” he said. “I needed answers.” “And?” the girl pressed. The boy swallowed. “I saw more than just a shadow.” A pause. “It wasn’t alone.” ⸻ A chill ran through the group. The hallway suddenly felt too large. Too empty. Too exposed. The boy continued, voice lower now. “There are things outside the reset. Watching it.” The teenager whispered, “Outside?” He nodded. “And one of them… noticed me.” ⸻ For a moment, nobody spoke. Even the distant noise of the school felt far away, like it belonged to another world entirely. Then the girl finally said it. “We need to survive the next midnight.” The teenager looked up. “How?” She met their eyes. “Together.” ⸻ The bell rang again. But this time, it didn’t sound normal. It sounded like a countdown.
