Chapter 1

Elena’s POV Today was supposed to be the third wedding anniversary of Alpha Ryker and I. I stared again at the clock on the wall as I stood in front of his chambers, waiting and hoping that he would show up or at least instruct the guards at the door to let me in. But he didn’t. Ryker and I had dated for two years before we got mated, a union pushed forward by the pack elders. As the daughter of the late Alpha of SilverFang Pack, I had been under immense pressure to settle, to mate and secure the stability of the pack. “A woman can’t lead,” they had said. “It is tradition,” they insisted. My uncle Darius had already begun circling the alpha seat like a vulture. And according to my cousin Kattie, he had been aligning himself with rogues, preparing to claim the pack by force if he had to. In fear of losing everything my parents built, I had mated with Ryker, my boyfriend at the time, to ensure the alpha seat stayed within reach. But now, as I stood outside his chambers for almost two hours without him coming out or even giving permission for the door to be opened, the doubt began to claw at me more viciously than ever. Had I made the right choice? Had choosing been the right thing I had done? “Luna, I suggest you return to your chambers. The Alpha is resting. He attended multiple council meetings today. I’ll notify him of your visit once he wakes,” one of the guards said, his voice formal but his eyes filled with pity. It stung. The same way it confused me. Yet I said nothing, I only stood there losing myself in thoughts I didn’t want to admit aloud. It wasn’t the first time I’d heard those words. And every time the guards promised to remind him, Ryker never came. Not once. Tonight, I had purposely come later, knowing he wouldn’t still be resting from any supposed “meetings” he claimed to have in the afternoon. Yet here I was, still being dismissed with the same rehearsed lines. There hadn’t even been a council meeting today. I knew that. But I hadn’t seen Ryker for three days to even confront him about it. He was rarely home. And when he was, I could never reach him as he was always shut behind a door, always too busy with pack matters, always unavailable. Two years ago, he moved out of our shared chambers altogether, saying he needed “personal space.” Since then everything about him had changed completely. I had asked him countless times what was wrong. He always said nothing. Always avoided me. Always kept himself far away. It had been over two years since he last touched me. In our entire mating, he had only touched me twice. On the consummation night and our one-year anniversary. And even for that anniversary night, I had practically begged him, followed him around for days until he finally remembered and accepted. Since then there has been nothing. No warmth or closeness,no affection supposed to exist between mates. Not even his mark on my neck as he hadn't marked me for stupid excuses! Just an endless, cold distance. A distance I was suddenly terrified would swallow me whole. I’d even had him investigated incase he patronized call girls in brothels, but to my surprise, nothing of that sort was ever reported back to me. And that only made me more confused and frustrated as to the reason behind his sudden change, his distance and coldness towards me. Especially now that the pack was already demanding an heir. Especially now that rumors were spreading like wildfire about how I was barren, how I was unable to give my alpha an heir and how that was why he was always avoiding me. I wondered how possible it was for me to get pregnant with pups when he didn’t even touch me in the first place. Just then, a loud voice slipped past the thick wooden door. It was muffled but unmistakable. I caught the guard’s gaze snapping to mine before he quickly lowered his eyes, guilt rolling off him so strongly it nearly choked me. Someone was inside with Ryker but the guards wouldn’t let me in because he hadn’t given permission. Still, I breathed deeply and refused to leave like I had planned to. “Inform the alpha that I will be entering. It seems he is already awake by now,” I whispered, my voice calm but cold as I stared straight at him. Yet he still wouldn’t meet my gaze. I knew this guard personally. I had saved his life during a rogue raid years before he joined the defense department. But the way he avoided looking at me now, it was enough to tell me something was very, very wrong. He knew what it was. He knew, but he wouldn’t speak. “What is wrong?” I asked suddenly, though the question wasn’t truly directed at him. My voice sounded distant, like I was speaking to myself, as though I was trying to understand a puzzle that only led to more pain. He didn’t reply. And when the voices behind the door resumed, clearer this time and louder that I forgot all the resolve I once had to leave. The clarity of the sounds ripped through me. Skin slapping against skin. A woman moaning. A man grunting as he kept pounding into her. A man I knew was no one else but my Ryker as I was standing in front of his door. It grew so loud I found it impossible to pretend I hadn’t heard. Why was a woman in Ryker’s room when I had just been told he was resting? Why had I been denied entry while someone else… someone else… Before I knew it, I stepped forward, ready to push the door open. “Luna, you can’t do this!” the guard rushed out, blocking my path. “The alpha gave clear instructions for no one to disturb him as he takes his rest. I’m sorry, but I can’t let you pass.” I almost scoffed, bitterly and painfully as I stared at him. At the nonsense he was spouting. At the blatant lie he was still trying to uphold when we both knew what was happening behind that door. “Get out of my way right now or I will make sure you regret disobeying me,” I commanded, my voice shaking but firm. He faltered and then hesitated, torn between the alpha’s word and my authority. “I am Luna and I will make sure you are severely punished for disobeying me,” I added and that finally did it. His shoulders dropped in defeat as he stepped aside, giving me just enough space. I pushed the door open. The moment it swung wide, my whole world tilted before my eyes. Because right there, before me, with no shame and no remorse, was the reason he’d kept me waiting outside his chambers for hours. Tears welled at the corners of my eyes as I watched in horror at what he was doing inside the very chamber I’d been denied entrance to.
