Chapter 2

Elena’s POV I stood in shock as I watched, unable to say nor do anything as my eyes remained glued to the scene before me. Ryker didn’t even seem to notice me, he didn’t even sense me nor did he smell me as he drove himself in and out of the lady beneath him. Beneath him, moaning shamelessly as he not only f****d her but peppered her body with kisses, kisses he had always denied me. Kisses he had told me he hated engaging in. I couldn’t move. Couldn’t even breathe. Whenever I had walked to Ryker demanding his time, pleading for affection, begging for intimacy the way mates were supposed to share, he always shut me off. Always. He told me he hated mating, hated the process, hated touching, hated kissing and said it felt weird and unnecessary. And yet here I was, watching him. Watching him not only pounding himself into whomever this woman was but kissing her. Touching her. Devouring her like she was everything he wanted and everything he had ever yearned for. Something he had refused me for years, even long before we were officially mated. I swallowed the bile that rose in my throat. Swallowed the humiliation. The betrayal! The kind of pain that made my bones tremble as I finally lifted my head, intending to speak if I still could. “Luna, please leave. The alpha is resting,” the guard rushed in again, voice breaking as he hesitated to drag me out. “Of course, I can see that,” I said, sparing him a single glance, my voice cold enough to burn. I turned back toward the bed. The two of them had finally disentangled themselves after hearing the commotion. And as my eyes met the woman’s and my heart shattered into a million more pieces. “Kattie?” I whispered, stunned. My cousin. My uncle Darius’ daughter. The same cousin who had been the first to warn me that her father wanted to steal the alpha position. The same girl I had grown up with. The girl I trusted more than anyone as she had betrayed her own father for my sake. How could she of all people be the one under Ryker? How could she be the woman he was cheating on me with? I shook my head slowly. No. No, this had to be a mistake. A dream. A nightmare. Maybe I was hallucinating. Maybe my mind, already bruised by the moans I’d heard at the door, was trying to make sense of betrayal by placing a familiar face on it. But then I remembered the last few weeks. How bold Kattie had become. How she had punished a servant for telling her not to sit on my Luna seat beside the alpha’s because it belonged to me. I had dismissed it at the time because she was my favorite person. Because everything that belonged to me, I treated as hers too. Because I loved her. I ignored her harshness, tone and disrespect, blaming it all on stress. But now, seeing her with Ryker, seeing both of them naked on a bed he refused to share with me for two years, I didn’t know how to feel. I didn't know what to say. Didn’t even know who I was in that moment. “And she’s here, Ryker,” Kattie said casually, not even looking at me. Not hiding herself or wanting to cover herself. Not ashamed. She didn’t even bother to close her legs as she lay there, her wet juices slipping out of her mould, her thighs still trembling from the orgasm Ryker had just given her. An orgasm he had never once given me. And as I watched her, as I watched him cover himself in shame while she showed none, I wondered if Ryker had ever once cared enough to make me feel what she looked like she had felt just moments ago. “Since when has this been going on?” I asked after a second of mustering up the courage and holding back the tears that were threatening to spill from the corners of my eyes. None of them gave me an answer and just when my lips parted again with my second question, Kattie cut me off before I could say it. “Just tell her, Ryker. It’s been too long now hiding this from her, I’m tired of the hide and seek game or being kept a secret,” Kattie said casually, as if my world wasn’t crumbling right in front of me. “A secret?” I asked in confusion as I turned towards Ryker’s direction, expecting an explanation. There had to be one. There had to be a reason. He couldn’t have just cheated on me and with her. And if it was my fault, I was ready to amend whatever had caused it. I didn’t want to lose him. Nor my cousin, Kattie. Perhaps she wanted something from me which was why she slept with him to spite me. Whatever it was that they wanted, I was ready to do it to appease them because I didn’t want to push away my mate or the only family I had left. “Ryker…” I called as I reached out to him, the tears falling helplessly from my eyes as I walked towards him, but before I could touch him, he pushed my hand off as if I was filth. “Don’t you understand?” he snapped suddenly. “I do not want you anymore, Elena. It is Kattie I want! Has all these years I kept my distance from you, not told you anything? I do not love you! So please, just stay away and do not touch me!” I was at a loss for words hearing him say that and, at the same time, didn’t want to believe him. “We’ve been mates for three years, Ryker. What do you mean?” I managed to rasp as tears threatened to fall. I had expected him to apologize. I had just caught him cheating on me and with no one else but my cousin, wasn’t that the right thing he was expected to do? “Let’s put this behind us and act as if this didn’t happen,” I added as I went on, wiping my tears. We could resolve this amicably and I couldn’t let it threaten the peace of the pack. Not when my uncle Darius was still with the rogues and was waiting for the perfect opportunity to attack the pack. If we had differences now, it wouldn’t be long before he would seize the chance. “We’ll all apologize, and we’ll put this behind us,” I managed to rasp once again as they both watched, not wanting this to cause a scandal that would reach the ears of the alpha council. My father did everything possible he could to secure the reputation of this pack, I couldn’t bring myself to make problems out of it. I was ready to forgive the both of them if only they were ready to admit that it was a mistake, despite how hurt I was, despite how my throat burned. “You do not get it, do you?” Kattie chirped in mockingly as she watched me. “You’re mates with Ryker because he allowed you, Elena. I am his fated mate and have been for five years. More years than you can count, even before you got to know him!” “Ryker….” I called as I looked in his direction once more, expecting him to say something at least. Expecting him to refute her claims. Ryker and it's problems started after we became mates. At least before that, we had no issues and had been deeply in love with each other. “It's true Elena. Kattie is my fated mate and she is the reason I haven't marked you till now. I couldn't mark you because you're not my mate nor the woman I love" he said coldly, not even sparing me a glance as his eyes were affectionately focused on Kattie's direction. The news hit me like a cruel twist as I stood and watched, unable to say something, unable to do anything even though I was by all rights supposed to. I turned towards the door where I wanted to leave. I couldn’t stand it. I couldn’t stand watching and had walked out, unable to keep staring at them and with the memories of their betrayal still echoing in my head.
