“Sri!” I shouted immediately I entered the house following Auni’s outbursts.
I never knew Auni was this serious with her plan. I am leaving today.
“Madam?” Sri called, accompanying it with a knock.
“Come in, Sri.” Sri opened the door and rushed in.
“Madam, are you okay?” She asked, peering at my face.
“I am fine, Sri. Here, have his.” I said, putting some of my gold earrings in her hand with some cash.
“Madam, what are you doing?”
“I will be leaving here soon, Sri. I don’t know when, but once you don’t see me. Take your things and run. Knowing Auni, she will come for you if she doesn’t see me.”
“But madam…”
“No, but Sri, Auni is not joking, and I can’t marry his second son when I’m not done mourning my Aiden. I can’t even marry him because of who he is.”
“Madams,” Sri called in a quaking voice, “where will I go?”
I hugged her. “Anywhere, Sri, anywhere far from here. Just don’t let Auni see you. She will focus on me if she doesn’t see you; if she sees you here after I’ve left, she will come for you.” My clothes were getting wet as Sri tears dropped.
“I will miss you, Madam.”
“I will miss you too, Sri. Be careful. You can go; I will send for you if I need something else.”
Sri cleaned her face and walked out of the room, making sure to stuff the gold earrings and cash into her dress pocket.
I ransacked my box immediately after she left, bringing out the sleeping elixir in there.
“How do I get this into their drink?” I thought to myself.
“Sri,” I called again. Some minutes later, Sri was in the room.
“Madam, she called when I hadn’t said anything to her.”
“I need your help, Sri.”
She came closer. “What is it, Madam? Are you sick?”
“I am not sick, Sri. I didn’t want to involve you in this, but I can’t do it with these men hovering over me.”
“What is it, Madam?”
“Put this into the bodyguard’s tea.” I whispered to her.
She shrank back at the same time muttering, “How?”
“They drink late at night; I have noticed that. I want you to put these before the drink gets to them.
I know the maid supplies the drink to them, so put it while it is still in the kitchen.” I instructed further.
“Will it kill them? She questioned, fear visible in her eyes.
“No, it will just make them sleep; once you put it in and they are served the drink. Let me know.”
“Okay, Madam.” Sri answered, at the same time stretching her hand to take the elixir.
“Thank you, Sri.”
“I will come back and let you know when I put it, madam.”
“I will be waiting, Sri.”
I was lying tensed on the bed when a knock sounded.
“Madam.”
“Come in, Sri.”
“I have added it.” Sri muttered immediately she came inside.
“Thank you, Sri.” I muttered back, and just then, we heard the maid serving the drinks to the men.
“Madam?” Sri called with fear in her eyes.
“They won’t die, Sri.” I assured her, holding her hands. “It is just so they sleep. Relax.”
“Go, pack your things, and leave.” I muttered to Sri after I had opened the door and confirmed that the men were deep in sleep.
Sri nodded, hugged, and with tears walked stealthily to her quarters, and just like Sri, I took my already packed handbag and stole away.
I trekked to the train station as I didn’t want to leave any trace and booked one going to Los Angeles; by this time, it was dawn already.
I took my seat, dozed off, but woke up on hearing some commotion to see one of the guards attempting to climb into the train.
I stood immediately and went to the toilet; I was in there when a knock sounded.
I opened the door to see a grimacing woman.
“Please, I want to use the toilet,” she pleaded.
I responded with a weak smile as I left the toilet with a pounding heart but loitered around the toilet area.
An hour later, the woman came out and widened her eyes in surprise at seeing me.
“Are you okay, Madam?“ she asked in surprise.
“I am, thank you.” I responded with a weak smile and then dashed into an empty toilet beside the one she just came out from.
“She might have a stomach upset like me.” I heard her mutter before she left.
Luckily for me, the train arrived in Los Angeles with no other incident.
I checked into a hotel on getting to the busy city.
“Room service.” A knock accompanied the voice.
I had ordered for a meal immediately I arrived.
“Come in.” I instructed as I tied up the robe from the wardrobe, having just finished having my bath.
The room attendant came in with a platter of food and an aroma that got me salivating.
“Your food is here, ma’am.” He said, putting the platter on the table.
“Thank you.” I said to him, sitting down to devour my meal.
“Hand over your bag to me,” the room attendant, who now had a g*n to my head, instructed.
