Chapter Two

MILICENT'S POV ”Milicent!” The voice jerked me back from the trance the knife held over me. “Milicent, are you there?” It was Ryan, my brother's best friend and his would be Beta. “Mili?!” he called again. I quickly hid the knife and replied back in croaky voice that held unshed tears. “I'm here!” Seconds later, he showed up on the path. “What are you doing here?” “Nothing,” I quickly replied back, hoping my tears won't push themselves out of my eyes. I wouldn't be able to stand Ryan seeing me cry. Not only that, he would demand for a reason why. And what would I tell him? That my boyfriend and bestfriend had been cheating on me for a long while back and I had been so foolish not to have figured it out? No, I couldn't. He would pity me, and pity was the last thing I needed — from him or anyone. This was my burden to bear. Something to always remind me of how cruel people could be, something to remind me to hold back when anyone wanted to get to close. This was a pain I didn't want to remember again. “You sure you're okay?” Ryan asked again and I nodded hurriedly, avoiding his eyes. “Yes, I'm fine.” My heart was beating rapidly. Had he met Gabrielle and Caleb on the way here? Or worse, had they been going at it while he passed by? I looked at him closely, trying to read him, but nothing him face gave nothing away. “Your father is back,” he said. “And he needs to see you now.” His words made me hesitate. “S-see me?” My father didn't like me around him because he claimed I reminded him too much of my mother. So what did he need me for? “Why?” I asked Ryan. He shook his head. “It's not in my place to say. Come on.” I focused on not tripping on my feet as I made my way back home, Ryan behind me. My heart was hurting, and I could barely keep the tears away. Why had they done that to me? Why? “Milicent,” Ryan called behind me and the urgency with which he called me made me turn back. "Is something wrong?" I asked. "It's your father," Ryan sighed. “What's wrong with him?” "He's severely injured. He was attacked on his way back." For a moment I just stared at him, dumbfounded. “How? What happened? Where is he?” "I don't know. He's not regained consciousness yet, but whoever did this was really strong." Ryan said grimly. “I'm sorry about lying to you. I just wanted you to see him.” I nodded. “Thank you, Ryan. Where is he now?” "The healers are attending to him in the packhouse," Ryan explained. My heart eased a little as I heard that, but not completely. Even though my father and I didn't have a relationship, I didn't want him dead. Ryan led the way. I ignored the startled looks on the faces of those present as I entered into the packhouse . I never really came here so they were surprised to see me. "Father," I called when I got to the healer and saw him. Who could've done this? "Calm down, Millicent, we're gonna take care of him okay?" said the healer beside him. "What happened?“ I asked turning to the healer whose name was Loveth. ”Is he going to be alright?" "He…" Loveth looked hesitant. "I'm not quite sure, he appears.. poisoned." "That's impossible!" Ryan interrupted. "Werewolves can't be poisoned." “You're right,” Loveth agreed, “but there's some sort of toxin that's intruding inside him, it's unlike anything I've ever seen. I've managed to only stabilize his condition.” “Does that mean you can't do anything about it?” Loveth sighed miserably “It's out of our hands. His body needs to push out the toxins itself bit by bit. We can only help.” “Thank you.” Soon, it was Ryan and I left alone in the pack house. We sat side by side, staring at dad. “I can't believe anyone would be able to do this to him. He's an Alpha for Goddess sake!” said Ryan hotly. Ryan was right, I thought. Who could fight Father heads on and leave him in this condition? I couldn't think of anyone or even any reason. Suddenly father coughed weakly. "Father," I rushed to the bed as I heard his weak coughs. Tears streamed down my cheek at the sight of him. He look so small and emancipated. "Are you alright? What happened?" "Rest your heart, child. I can't be killed that easily," Father tried chuckling only to cough again. “Just try and relax,” said Ryan, appearing beside me. “I'm fine. I just need time to recover. I'll be fine.” "I'm afraid we don't have much time." Ryan suddenly spoke and my father nodded agreeing with him. "What do you mean?" I looked between both of them. What were they talking about? Ryan exchanged glances with father, and at that, something sour and heavy settled at the bottom of my stomach. Their strange exchange scared me. Ryan sighed as if tired and said, “The attack is from a rogue.” “A rogue?” I asked, disbelief echoing in my voice. “And not just one rogue, Milicent. They've come together to fight us "You mean… rogue wolves are uniting to fight against us?” “They're most likely the mastermind behind the ambush. No one else could've injured your father. And besides, pack don't go against packs. Unless there's some feud going on between the Alphas.” I shook my head. “That's not possible.” Ryan nodded, seconding my opinion. “That's not possible.” My father was one of the most peaceful alphas amongst all other Alphas and never went to war with any other pack. Sometimes, he even helped settle disputes between other packs. Father tried to speak again. “There's something you have to do. You have to…” He broke off as he began to cough violently. I immediately rushed to his side. “Father, are you okay?” “I'm fine. But you need to listen to me.”
