Don't Let Her See

1023 Words
Roman She’d seen it. Knew that in real time. Moment the episode passed and I straightened and looked up and found her eyes already on me. Already steady. Already somewhere past the expression she wore for the rest of the room. She hadn’t looked alarmed. Hadn’t looked away. Just looked. Precise attention of someone who’d been building a picture for days and just got a piece that confirmed the shape. She’d seen it and knew what it meant. Lain awake with that knowledge most of the night. Not dread exactly. Passed through dread months ago and came out the other side into something more functional. More the specific discomfort of being seen by the one person I’d been most carefully not being seen by. Need to understand what that changed. By morning I had an answer. Needed to ask her to stay silent. Not because it would fix anything. Because timing mattered. Found her before morning council. She was in the east corridor. Had a reasonable sense of her movements by now. Not surveillance. Incidental awareness that came from sharing a building with someone two weeks. She was alone. Stopped when she saw me. “Alpha,” she said. “Luna.” Fell into step beside her. “A moment.” She adjusted her pace slightly to accommodate the conversation and waited. Let other people use words they needed while she conserved hers. “Last night,” I said. Small pause. “Yes,” she said. “I’d ask you to keep it to yourself.” Looked at me. Direct look. Kind she used when assessing whether what was being said was the full thing or just the surface of it. “Why?” she said. “Alliance was signed yesterday. If word starts moving about Shadowfang’s Alpha before ink’s properly dried, we lose half the ground we built in the sessions.” Paused. “Because I’m asking.” Last part wasn’t in prepared version. Came out anyway. Not strategic framing. Just: I’m asking. Not something I did easily or often. We reached end of east corridor. She stopped. I stopped. Looked at me a long moment. “I won’t embarrass you,” she said. Not: I’ll keep your secret. Not: you can trust me. Gave me something more specific and more limited than either of those. Offering professional conduct extended to cover a personal situation. Being clear about distinction. Cost her something to say it. Didn’t know what. Knew it cost something. “Thank you,” I said. She nodded once. Walked into main hall. Stayed in corridor a moment. I won’t embarrass you. She hadn’t said she wouldn’t tell. She’d said she wouldn’t embarrass me. Close but not identical. Gap between them was where her own dignity lived. She wasn’t doing this for me. Doing it because she’d decided it was right way to handle information she’d come into without seeking it. That distinction mattered. Filed it with other things that mattered and went to morning session. Day was ordinary. Meetings. Decisions. Regular administrative weight of running territory. Everything proceeding with professional momentum. Watched for sign she’d said something. There was none. Whatever she knew, she kept it internally. Precise. Without visible effect on public conduct. By evening fairly certain Aldric hadn’t heard anything. Mental accounting: Mira. Status: discreet. Word sat wrong. She wasn’t contained. She’d chosen to be discreet. Different things. Wolf went quiet at midnight. Not gradually. Present and then not. Connection cut without warning. At desk reviewing patrol updates. Ordinary work. Looked up from papers and there was nothing. No wolf. No territory. No pack. Just room and lamp and specific quality of silence I’d learned to recognize as absence of thing I wasn’t supposed to be losing. Set down pen. Pressed two fingers to wrist. Habit. Check. Faint. Territory still there in some form. Broad strokes. But detail was gone. Individual threads. Specific warmth that said: she’s in east wing, thirty feet that direction, working late. Gone. Sat very still. Learned over eighteen months not to fight this. Fighting made it worse. Learned to wait. Sit with nothing and do something mechanical with hands and let time pass. Hadn’t known, when I learned that, waiting would get longer. One hour. Got through one hour on patrol reports. Words weren’t going in. Reading same paragraph repeatedly. Physical act of looking at text gave something to do with part of brain that wanted to panic and was being refused permission. Hour and twenty minutes. Stopped pretending to read. Put reports aside. Sat in chair and looked at fire and was very much just a man in a room. Nothing more. No wolf. No territory. No particular sense of what came next. Thought about my father. Man of strong convictions and bad instincts. Combination cost pack things I’d spent Alpha years trying to repay. Didn’t pass on what held territory together underneath authority. Learned that part too late. Still learning it. Three hours. That’s when it came back. Not gradually. All at once. Territory rushing back with specific relief of returning sensation. Wolves. Land. Pulse of it. East wing. Warmth I hadn’t been able to feel three hours: she was still there. Working. Or lying awake like I’d been. Still there. Pressed hand flat against desk. Three hours. Longest yet. Hadn’t recorded one longer than two before tonight. Opened private ledger. Locked drawer. One Aldric had never seen. Wrote date and duration and closed it again. Record was getting longer. Episodes getting worse. Made peace with direction of it, abstract, way you make peace with things before they arrive. They were arriving. Went to window. Outside, territory lay dark and quiet. East wing, light still on. Faint. Distant. Edge of it visible against stone. She was still awake. Stood at window and looked at light and thought about what it meant that three hours of nothing ended moment I remembered she was there. Not nearness. Just knowledge she hadn’t left. Whether that counted as worst news I’d received or only good news I had. Both, probably. Stayed at window until light went out. Then went to bed. Didn’t sleep long.
