When the Major heard Jack's story, sitting in his room at the inn, he nodded silently, as if he expected what he heard. Jack came to visit him right before work, after a quick breakfast with the family.
"Well, doesn't surprise me at all," the Major said, thoughtfully leaning back. "They want to keep a tight lid on the situation — and control everybody. If I told you the pressure I'm under…" his voice trailed off, as if he shared too much.
"So how do I reject them?" Jack asked.
"Reject?" the Major said, frowning. "Why would you do that?"
"Because I promised," Jack said. "And I keep my promises. At least the ones I made to my wife."
