Once I’ve sorted a few things, I head over to Ava’s house. I plan on taking her out to her favourite restaurant. Her father, being a d**k to her earlier, is bound to have been hard on her. She acts like she doesn’t care about what he thinks, but I know differently. I see the disappointment in her eyes when she talks about him. The despair when she talks about how she grew up. It eats at her, and all I wanna do is kill him, but I know she’d hate me for that. I arrive at her door and knock. She doesn’t answer. I knock again and again, she doesn’t answer. This is unlike her. In the last week, she always answers the door at least after the first knock. I grab the spare key she gave me in case of emergencies and open her door. It’s dark. I turn on the light and it looks like she isn’t home yet, so I give her a call. Her phone goes straight to voicemail. Okay, so now I’m getting worried.
I make my way to my car and head to the Greenwich, Jordan and Loughlin law office. The front light is still on, so I try to walk through the front door. It's locked. What the hell is happening? I try again, and it’s definitely locked, so I phone Ava again. As I hear the ringing tone in my ear, I hear a phone ringing from the law office. I look to the ground and see my name light up on a phone on the ground inside the door. What the f**k is going on? I knock as loud as I can on the glass doors without breaking the glass, and still, no one answers, so I call Jared.
“What’s up, boss?”
“Meet me at Greenwich, Jordan, and Loughlin,” I growl. “Something is wrong. Ava’s phone is currently on the office lobby floor, and no one is answering.”
“f**k. I’ll be there ASAP.” He hangs up, and I turn back to the door, and I kick through the glass. I pull the gun from my underarm holster and walk into the building. I look around the lobby and see Ava’s handbag beside the reception desk. I walk down the halls, hoping and praying that she is okay. I get to her office, and all the blinds are closed. Weird, I think. She always has her blinds open, unless I’m here. I see there is a slit in the blinds where they’ve gotten stuck and look through. The horror that fills me at what I see has stolen my breath. She’s on the floor, beaten and bruised, her clothes in tatters. I rush to the door of her office to find it’s also locked. I’m only noticing now that a man in a black hoodie and sweats is in there with her. What has he done to her? I kick the door open, and he turns. The look of realisation on his face is palpable. He knows who I am.
“King?” he says quizzically.
I grab him by the throat and throw him to the floor before rushing to Ava and picking her up. I look to where I threw him, and he’s passed out. Ava starts to squirm in my grip, then begins to thrash, and I nearly drop her.
“Ava,” I say gently. “It’s me, little vixen. I’ve got you.” She goes still, and one eye bursts open. She looks at me with relief in her eye. I would say eyes, but the other one is so swollen that she is probably unable to open it right now. As I walk through the hallways back to the shattered door, I notice everything. She has bruises all over her body and face. When my gaze goes back to her face, I see tears in her eyes. If I had a hand free, I would wipe them away. She tries to speak, but nothing comes out.
“It’s okay, Ava,” I say with conviction. “The man who has done this to you will suffer. I will make sure of it. Everything’s going to be okay.” I could see the trepidation on her face, but then she sighs in resignation and cuddles into me gently. More than likely, she is trying not to hurt herself.
When I get to the front door, I see Jared, Kyle, and Greg. They all have their guns pointed at me, then when realisation hits, they lower their weapons.
“What happened?” Jared growls. I can understand. He has grown to like Ava, even in the short time they’ve known each other.
“Some guy is in her office. Passed out. He beat her.”
“Is he still there?” Greg asks.
“Yes,” I say through my teeth. “I don’t know what he did to her implicitly, but Ava can’t speak at the moment. I’m taking her to see the doctor. While I’m doing that, get that piece of s**t to the basement of my house.”
“Yes, boss,” they all say in unison. I bring Ava to my car, put her in gently, and call the doctor on the way to the house.
We get there and the doctor is already there, waiting for us. He tells me to rush her to my medical room, and I do so quickly, but gently. He starts working on her and tells me to get out of the way so he can work on helping her. He’s lucky I know he only has her best interests at heart. I told him about her not being able to speak and he gets to work on various scans. I walk out of the room. My anger for the man who did this to her is rising and if she wakes, I don’t want her to see me like that. I will get answers from him, because there is no f*****g way he acted on his own recognisance. I will get those answers, even if I have to torture the s**t out of the man to get them.
