Chap. 2 The Snarling of Wolves

843 Words
(RainPOV) I had actually woken up early today. My wolf sensing something was coming. In a few hours I would be 18, though I knew I wouldn’t find my mate. Not in this place. As I lay in my cell listening to Rōzu chase her tail I catch another, fainter, noise. I growl at her to be quiet and strain my ears forward to catch the sound. What I heard had me in shock. It had been two week since I had last heard or sensed any sign of Sabastion and his words came back to me. The day last day he was here, the last thing he said was, “When you hear the snarling of wolves it will be time to leave this place.” I scramble to the back of the cell with a whimper, still sore from yesterdays beating. I stay huddled at the back of the cell as the sound gets closer and closer. My wolf was more on edge as well, which didn’t help. Rōzu, who sensed my change in mood and came to hide with me. As the sounds got closer and closer, the other wolves start to notice and try to hide in their cells as well. Soon enough the sounds of fighting wolves inters the cells as they fight their way into the underground space. As more and more of them got down into the cells, I picked out Sabastion’s sent among them. There was another sent though... stronger then even Sabastion’s soft sent and I felt myself drawn to it. “Fresh rain and pine.” I think to myself. The sent was still a little ways off but as it came closer, I was slowly drown out of my safe corner till I stood at the door of the cell. Suddenly the sent had all but invaded my senses when the cell door was ripped from its hinges and a pair of strong yet gentle hands ran through my fur. Everything else melted into the background as my wolf starts to purr, “Mate.” He said happily. A small whine snapped me out of it and I turn my head in Rōzu’s direction and, for the first time in a really long time, I wag my tail and yip happily. Then turning back to the man I wag my tail more as he speaks. “So you must be Mr Wolf.” I huff at Sabastion’s name for me and shake my head. “Well we need to get out of here. All the others are already out of the cells. Now follow me and stay close.” He says quickly as he backs away from the cell then turns and heads for the stairs. Making sure Rōzu was following me, I follow his sent trail and run after him. As I follow him up the stairs, I stop at the opening. So many different sents invaded my nose that I started to get overwhelmed. I stood frozen to the spot, not knowing what to do or where to go. Then I feel tingles running though my fur as my mate lays a hand on my side and talks to me gently. “I am going to put a rope round your neck.” He starts but I growl softly and shake my head no. He is quite for a moment then I feel the rough service of a rope against my nose. “Then hold the rope in your teeth so that can lead you out of here.” He tries and I take the rope between my large k9s then felt a slight tug on it and follow, after I make sure Rōzu is following me. I make myself concentrate on the sound of Rōzu and the gentle tug here and there on the rope. If I didn’t, I knew I would get lost among all the sents and sounds around me. Between the sents of blood and all the different wolves plus the sounds of the fighting and snarling it would be really bad to get lost here. After what seemed like forever I smelled pine trees and moss and wild things. I wag my tail and let go of the rope, going deeper into the trees loving the smell after all the years of metal, blood, and death. As I ran, Rōzu ran next to me, her paw steps soft and light compared to mine. As we ran another set of steps joined in and I recognize the sent of my mate, which I also realized I had already known his sent from when it was on Sabastion’s clothes. “Yoru.” I say through an open link and hear him crash to a stop. “Who said that.” He asked in surprise. “I did.” I tell him through the link and turn to the sound of his voice and yip at him. “So you can talk.” He says sounding happy. I wag my tail happily and nod. “Since you know my name already can you tel me yours?” He asked. I think about it for a moment and finally say, “Rain.”
