Chapter 2

1078 Words
Bang! Bang! Bang! Jonathan, a burly man with well-defined muscles from years of working out, towered over Julian, who was no match for him. In no time, Julian was knocked to the ground. "How dare a b*stard like you hit me? You must have a death wish!" Jonathan snarled, his rage far from spent. He grabbed a cup from the desk and hurled it at Julian's head. Crash! The teacup shattered against Julian's forehead, and blood immediately began to stream down his face. "Arrgh!" Julian cried out in pain before collapsing unconscious. "F*ck, he passed out. What a god*mn p*ssy!" Jonathan spat, glaring at him with disdain. Swoosh! Just then, blood trickled from Julian's forehead, running down his neck and soaking into the jade pendant he wore on his chest. Suddenly, a red glow emanated from the pendant and surged into Julian's body. It wasn't just any jade. It was a treasure that reacted to blood! Julian's blood began to boil as his body heated up, swelling slightly. His bones crackled and popped, and the wound on his forehead slowly closed. At the same time, an ancient voice echoed in his mind, "I am the Sacred Medical Mentor. Today, I bestow upon you the witch doctors' medical skills. Use them to benefit humanity..." The voice grew stern. "Remember, with this inheritance comes great responsibility. Uphold righteousness, never stray to evil, or you will perish in no time!" In his dazed state, Julian saw a golden scroll slowly unfold in his mind. Half an hour later, Julian felt as though his entire body had been reforged. His strength had grown far beyond that of an ordinary human, and his mind was now brimming with mysterious knowledge like medicine, the art of spatial arrangement, wealth-building techniques, and more. Most astonishing of all was the "Witch Doctors' Medical Classic," which contained countless spells and medical techniques, such as the Misfortune Spell, the Divine Spell, and the Evil-Dispelling Spell. "What the h*ll just happened?" Julian muttered in confusion. After what felt like ages, he finally regained full consciousness, only to find himself lying in someone's arms. At first, he thought it was Lyra, but when he looked up, he saw Natalie Turner. Natalie, the director of the hospital's internal medicine department, had fair skin and a graceful figure. She was holding him with concern in her eyes. "Julian, why are you lying on the office floor? If someone else saw you, they'd think you were drunk." Julian hesitated, unsure of how to explain. "It's nothing, Ms. Turner. I just felt dizzy and fainted." How could he possibly tell anyone that his girlfriend had been trading her body for an intermediate professional title right here in this office? But what shocked him even more was that his body felt completely fine. There was no pain, no wound on his forehead, and not a single trace of blood on the floor. Yet Julian clearly remembered Jonathan beating him up, smashing the cup into his head, and the excruciating pain that had knocked him out. Now, though, it was as if none of it had ever happened. In fact, his skin looked healthier, and his body felt stronger than ever. "You're here for the night shift, right? Have you seen Jonathan and Lyra?" Natalie asked, her tone laced with suspicion. "No, I haven't," Julian replied quickly, still unwilling to reveal the truth. But inwardly, his anger flared. 'Those two sc*mbags must've cleaned up the mess and fled when they saw me unconscious.' Natalie returned to her desk and gave him a meaningful look. "If you don't speak up, bad luck will follow you." It was as if she had already guessed what had happened. As expected, the next afternoon, when Julian came to work and was doing his ward rounds, his phone rang. Julian checked his phone and saw the call was from Natalie. He quickly answered and said respectfully, "Ms. Turner, how can I help?" A cool, composed female voice came through the line, "Come back immediately. I'm waiting in my office." Julian hesitated for a moment before asking, "Ms. Turner, may I ask what this is about?" "You've got some nerve to ask me what you did!" she snapped. Click! The call ended abruptly. Julian's heart sank. There was a distinct edge to Natalie's tone that spelled trouble. "What did I do?" he muttered to himself as he hurried out of the ward and made his way toward the office. 'What could Natalie want with me?' he wondered. A sense of unease gnawed at Julian. Could it be that she had found out about what happened last night with Jonathan and Lyra? Natalie was a striking woman—fair-skinned, tall, and with delicate, refined features. As the heiress of a wealthy family, she carried herself with an air of natural elegance. Yet her cold, distant demeanor kept most people at bay. Behind her back, colleagues had nicknamed her the "Aloof Miracle Doctor." Pride was a trait many women carried, but Natalie seemed to possess it in abundance. And why wouldn't she? Despite her youth, she was an exceptionally skilled physician. At just twenty-six, she had earned her doctorate from the prestigious Royal College of Medicine. Upon returning to the country, she was swiftly promoted to become Riverheim Hospital's youngest-ever internal medicine director. Her reputation preceded her. In the entire Riverheim medical community, Natalie Turner was a household name. What puzzled Julian most, however, was the rumor he'd heard after joining the hospital. Several top-tier hospitals in Bredonia and Oceania had reportedly offered Natalie lucrative positions as an expert professor, but she turned them all down. No one knew why. Natalie had never shared her reasons, leaving others to speculate. In short, she was a total mystery. When Julian stepped into the internal medicine doctor's office, he immediately felt the weight of several pairs of eyes on him. His colleagues, seated at their desks, glanced up uneasily as he entered. The knot in Julian's stomach tightened. Their expressions said it all—something had happened, and it clearly involved him. But what could it be? He hadn't done anything wrong. It was Jonathan and Lyra who had crossed the line, not him! Taking a deep breath to steady himself, Julian walked in. Natalie didn't even look up. She was fully absorbed in reviewing a medical record. Julian approached her desk cautiously and asked in a low voice, "Ms. Turner, you wanted to see me?"
