Chapter 10: Who Started The Fire?

329 Words
The police report was on Evan’s desk when I got to the office. “Arson. Accelerant: gasoline. Suspect: unknown.” Evan was rubbing his temples. He hadn’t slept. “You read it?” he asked. “Yeah.” I sat down across from him. “Victoria said I was in danger.” His head snapped up. “What did she say to you?” “That the fire wasn’t over. That I should leave. Take the money.” Evan slammed his hand on the desk. “She’s lying. She wants you scared.” “Or maybe she’s trying to help,” I said quietly. He stood up and walked to the window. 80 floors up. “My father built this company,” he said. “Victoria was supposed to run it with me. Until she tried to push me out.” “So the fire was her?” “I don’t know.” He turned to me. “But I know someone is targeting us. And you’re in the middle of it because of me.” My phone buzzed. Unknown number again. A video. 3 seconds. The warehouse. A figure in a hoodie pouring something near Dock 17. Then another text: `Last warning. Leave him. -V` I showed Evan. His face went dark. “This is enough,” he said. “We’re going to the police. Now.” On the way down, he took my hand. “Heaven, listen to me. Whatever happens, don’t let go of me. Okay?” “Okay,” I whispered. But as the elevator doors opened, Victoria was waiting in the lobby. With two police officers. “CEO Cross,” one said. “We need you to come with us. You’re a person of interest in the arson case.” Evan didn’t look surprised. He just looked at me. “Don’t worry,” he mouthed. The Accidental CEO was about to be arrested. And I was the only one who could prove him innocent.
