Chapter 5: The Warehouse Crisis

373 Words
The phone call ruined everything. “CEO Cross. We have a problem at the warehouse.” Evan was already grabbing his jacket. “Where?” “Dock 17. Fire.” Fire. At his company. On his first day as CEO. “Stay here,” he told me. But I was already following him. The contract said I had to be his wife 24/7. That included crises. The warehouse was chaos. Fire trucks, smoke, workers running. Evan jumped out of the car before it even stopped. “What happened?” he barked at the manager. “Short circuit. We got most of it out. But 2 million in inventory is gone.” Victoria was already there. Of course she was. “Wow,” she said, looking at me. “The new wife comes to a fire? Trying to play CEO too?” Evan stepped between us. “Don’t talk to her.” “Or what?” Victoria laughed. “You’ll fire me? You can’t. I’m still on the board.” I hated how she looked at him. Like she still owned him. Then I saw it. A worker trapped under a beam near the back. “No one go in there!” someone yelled. “It’s not stable!” Before I could think, I was running. “Heaven!” Evan shouted behind me. The smoke burned my eyes. The heat was insane. “Hey! Can you hear me?” I crawled to the man. He was unconscious. Strong arms grabbed me from behind. Evan. “What are you doing? You could’ve died!” he yelled in my ear. Then he lifted the beam and pulled both of us out. Outside, firefighters rushed the man to an ambulance. Evan was checking me all over. “Are you hurt? Are you okay?” “I’m fine,” I whispered. “Because of you.” He stared at me. Ash on his face. Panic in his eyes. For a second, I thought he’d kiss me again. For real this time. Instead he pulled me into a hug. Tight. “You scared me,” he muttered into my hair. And I realized... the Accidental CEO wasn’t so accidental anymore. He was exactly where he was supposed to be.
