Chapter 14:The Gate Way

TITLE Chapter 14: The Getaway EPISODE CONTENT Darkness swallowed the penthouse whole. The only sound was my breathing and the faint echo of Evan’s footsteps on marble. “Stairs,” he said quietly. His voice was low, controlled. “Don’t use the elevator. Don’t turn on your phone. Don’t make a sound.” He found my hand in the dark. His palm was warm, steady, completely at odds with how fast his heart had to be beating. We moved past the kitchen island where his laptop was still open, the payroll file glowing faintly before the screen died. The emergency lights kicked on. Everything turned red. It looked like a crime scene. At the stairwell door, Evan stopped. He tilted his head like he was listening to something I couldn’t hear. Footsteps. Heavy. The sound of our shoes hitting concrete was too loud, too exposed. Every few landings Evan would pause, check over the railing, then pull me down another flight. Halfway down, my phone vibrated in my pocket. Once. Twice. I didn’t dare look. Then a third buzz. I pulled it out just enough to see the screen light up my face. Unknown number. `I told you to delete it. Last chance.` My hands started shaking. Evan glanced back. Saw my face. “You okay?” “Keep going,” I whispered back. I shoved the phone back in my pocket and forced my legs to move faster. When we hit.
