Chapter Eleven: The Alpha Moves

381 Words
Kael was already on his feet when the howl ended. It tore through the night like a blade, reverberating through his bones, yanking him from sleep with a violence that left no room for doubt. The bond burned. Not pain—alarm. Aria. He shoved open the doors to his chambers, fury rolling off him in waves. Guards snapped to attention as he stalked through the corridor. “Beta Rowan,” Kael barked. “Now.” Rowan appeared moments later, fastening his cloak. “Alpha?” “She’s in danger,” Kael said. “I felt it.” Rowan hesitated only a fraction. “The omega?” Kael’s eyes flashed. “My mate.” The word tasted like fire. He didn’t wait for permission. He didn’t call a council. He didn’t look toward Lyra’s chambers. Within minutes, a small unit was assembled—fast wolves, loyal, silent. Kael shifted at the edge of the forest, bones snapping, power exploding through him as his wolf took control. Run. Miles away, Aria woke with a gasp. The room above the shop was dark, the air tense. The bond flared again—stronger now, closer. Not fear this time. Movement. Purpose. She pressed a hand to her chest. He’s coming. Maeve was already awake, standing by the window. “So,” she said calmly, “the Alpha finally stopped pretending.” Aria swallowed. “He can’t come here.” Maeve turned. “He already is.” A second howl rose in the distance—closer than before. Not one. Many. Maeve grabbed her staff. “Rogues don’t travel alone. Someone sent them.” Aria’s blood hummed, answering the threat like a call. She stood, steadier than she had ever felt. “Then I won’t run.” Maeve studied her for a long moment, then nodded. “Good. Tonight, you learn.” At the edge of the village, Kael skidded to a halt, nostrils flaring. Smoke. Fear. Blood. And beneath it all—her scent. Changed. Stronger. Awake. His wolf snarled, possessive and furious. Whatever had been hidden from the world was no longer sleeping. And Kael realized, with a shock that cut deeper than any blade— Sending Aria away hadn’t removed her from danger. It had put her at the center of it.
