It had been three days. I sat in the room with my mate. He was asleep. I sighed as I read the same page of my book over and over. The council arrived early as Taiga Yasi summoned them. They were conferring in secret with the Dragus council and Hart. Haze and Brik were on board Styxx, lying low.
“What happened?” Nix ordered sitting up. I jumped, startled, and turned to face my formal mate.
“You were bitten by a Dragoon Fly,” I said standing beside him. I fussed with his blanket and smoothed the fur on his shoulders. He pushed me away.
“Stop Luca, I am fine. What is a Dragoon Fly?”
“We discovered them while you were imprisoned. They are huge and savage, it came through the window jabbed you with its stinger and carried you out of the palace. Holon and his men saved you, they tracked it, though were unable to kill the fly. It escaped while they were racing you to the hospital. We are hoping the injuries it sustained will kill it. I am glad to see you awake. I was so worried Nix.” I cried squeezing out tears. Nix pat my shoulder.
“Holon and his men saved me. I am impressed. I thought them useless.” He said. I shook my head.
“Oh no, if not for them I fear it would have-.” I stopped speaking to cover my mouth.
“Would have, what?” Nix demanded, squirming uncomfortably on the bed.
“They have a long tube-like nose. It smashes through the back of your skull and sucks your brain out. You are still alive until your brain stem snaps.” I explained naming a scene in a movie I’d seen once; while refusing to look at Mex standing so still in the corner, my mate had yet to notice him. My Nix would have the second before he opened his eyes.
The huge male standing in the corner would have made me burst out laughing, as he was the Dragoon Fly I was referring too.
“Then the crown is in Holon’s debt. What of the prisoners?”
“They were found and killed,” I whispered dropping my gaze to my claws.
“Good. I will not have opposition. I am the King and respect is demanded even from family. There will be no more repeats of the disgusting scene in my office Luca. Am I understood.” He stated speaking of when I dropped my clothes. I nodded.
“Of course, I promise I will not throw myself at you again unless you specifically ask for me,” I replied. Nix nodded.
“Good. I expect you to move out of the palace and find lodging elsewhere. We wouldn’t want the council to think we are not abiding by their ruling, now would we?” He asked. I shook my head. I was more than happy to go along with his commands, as the decree Nix signed was in the hands of the Council. Mex cleared his throat.
“Holon is here.” He murmured. Nix’s head snapped around to stare wide-eyed at the huge male standing to one side as the Ginger army commander walked in the door. He bowed his head.
“Ah, Holon. Luca tells me I am in your debt. A Dragoon Fly tried to kill me. You tracked it and fought it off. Well done.” Nix stated magnanimously. Holon’s mouth twitched slightly. He bowed his head again.
“It was my duty, nothing more.” He replied seriously, once he’d gotten himself under control. Doctor Leek strolled in, he bowed his head to Nix and pushed more sedative into the small cannula in his arm.
“What is this?” He demanded.
“Medicine to combat the Dragoon Fly venom, my dear,” I stated calmly. I stroked his claw softly until he dropped into a deep sleep.
“Will this one allow Nix, to sleep instead of waking him up?” I asked the doctor. He nodded.
“It will. Go do what you must.” Leek said with an encouraging smile. I looked at Holon.
“I will watch after him. Go.” I left the room quickly, Mex on my heels.
The Council’s cruiser was landing beside the palace. We met them as they walked inside. I cast a distasteful glance around at what Nix had ordered done to the place. Hart blinked at the new decor. I stepped forward and shook hands with the council. Taiga Yasi bowed her head and smiled.
“I welcome the council to the Therros Colony,” I stated formally. Hart grinned indicating the sitting room to the left. We all sat, drinks and food were served before commencing.
“Queen Luciana, if what you say has merit, the Sumi is in a lot of trouble.” One of the males stated seriously.
“I can show you the test from our doctor. There is a bug in my mate’s head. Under sedation, the real Nix wakes up. He said if Councillor Yasi tries to read him, she will become trapped.” I reported worriedly.
“My dear, if I know there is a bug there, it can hardly be a trap for me. I would stay away from it.”
“It is your choice. I can only warn you that you face opposition.” I said. She smiled and nodded.
“Concerns for Nixim Kane aside, how fairs the colony?” Sagan asked with a small smile. Hart grinned.
“We have a small but flourishing trade in the Feng system. Our crops and stock have yielded great results. If it were not for our dear queen, we would not have made it through our first winter.”
“You have come a long way since the human we met so many months ago.” Taiga Yasi said. I nodded.
“Sometimes I wonder if there is anything of the old me left,” I replied shocking them all.
“You do not feel as you once did?” Gosco, a small male with one side of his body made of a coral type substance.
“Yes and no councillor. I am more than I was back then. I am no longer human, I am Therrom, a mate, a mother, and a queen. I am no longer just plain old Luciana Hex. Sometimes I wish for the simplicity of my old life before I open my eyes and behold the wonder we have created in my new life. As you see, it is complicated.”
“Ah yes. We all know the feeling well. We have not always been councillors. Our lives were somewhat different before we came together.” Harrid said, her voice soft. I peered into her too-big eyes, she had gills behind her ears and a large fin on her back. I laughed softly.
“I am sure they were.” A knock sounded on the door. All heads swivelled to see Koi standing in the doorway with my cubs. The little panthers held out their arms, grins spread across their faces. I chuckled.
“Oh, how delightful! Your cubs.” Harrid laughed. I nodded and held out my claws for them. Koi deposited them both in my lap. Nadia launched herself onto Hart and immediately wanted up onto his shoulder.
“Now, now. Manners little Nadia, our guests are very important. They are from the council.” Hart said. Nadia looked around at all the faces, she played anxiously with her tail and looked to me.
“It’s alright my love.” I murmured. Nadia came to sit beside me again. I wrapped one arm around her.
“They are wonderful Luca. You must be so proud.”
“I am, thank you. Nadia and Maliki are marvelous. I look forward to their father knowing them.”
Hart looked down at his watch. He nodded.
“Speaking of Nixim, it is time. Lead on Luca.” Taiga Yasi said. The entire council stood.
“If you will follow me,” Hart stated leading them out of the palace and into the city.
I passed the twins to Koi once more, kissing my two cubs on the head before hurrying after the small group headed to the hospital. Mex and I followed a few steps behind.
“What do you think of all this?” I asked curiously. Mex tucked his claws into his pockets.
“I think there is going to be a war. The intergalactic council will unleash their forces on the Sumi. Found guilty the high chancellor will be captured and brought to Kane, where your bloodthirsty mate will rip out his heart.” Mex replied with an offhand shrug. I chuckled.
“No, he wouldn’t.”
“What do you mean?” Mex asked looking down at me as I pushed open the hospital doors. I grinned.
“He would let me do it,” I whispered my eyes flashing blue for a moment. Mex grinned.
“I know why Nixim mated you now, you’re as bloodthirsty as he is.” He chuckled softly falling silent as we approached the room where my mate was lying. Nix bowed his head when the council filed into his room. I looked to the Doctor with one raised brow.
“He managed to shrug off the sedative.” The physician murmured dismayed.
“Taiga Yasi, do not even think about going into my head,” Nix growled strapped to the bed. I stepped into the room behind the councillors. This was not my Nix.
“Hello dear,” I said with one claw on my hip.
“You are meant to be with our children. I gave you strict orders that you were not to involve yourself in crown matters. Hart! What are you doing here? My mate told me that you were dead.” Nix stated angrily.
“I lied.” I purred. The council members turned to look at one another. Taiga Yasi suddenly lashed out with her power. Orange light filled the room with an oppressive presence. Nix cried out, his body slammed into the bed. He convulsed.
“Release him!” Taiga Yasi’s voice cried in a haunting tone through the room, it vibrated the very blood in my veins.
“Luciana! Call your mate!” She cried. My eyes lit up with a feral blue light, I opened my mouth and the scream of a panther roared through the room. Hart’s roar joined mine, followed by Mex. Holon opened the window. Outside the roars of Therros echoed through the colony in a deafening chorus. Nixim’s back arched on the bed, his eyes snapped open blazing a bright blue. He snarled gripping the sides of his head with his claws.
“Get out of my head Sumi parasite!” He snarled menacingly to the creature trying to control him. A small beetle suddenly crawled out of his ear, dropping to the floor. Mex squashed it with one large foot. The oppressive orange light tapered off. Taiga Yasi stumbled, one of the other councillors wrapped his arm around her waist. Doctor Leek stood waiting with a wheelchair. They lowered the female into it carefully. I turned to my mate. He was breathing heavily, his eyes tracking the room.
“Nixim Kane!” One of the councillors asked stepping forward. The huge Therros climbed to his feet, rolling his shoulders. He seemed to have grown since I’d last seen him.
“Yes.” He replied. The word almost a purr of satisfaction.
“How can we prove this is you and not the Sumi controlling you?”
“Oh, I can help with that,” I said stepping out from behind Mex, who had thrown himself in front of me when the huge panther moved. Nix’s gaze captured mine.
“You definitely can. Hello Kitten.” Nix said with a grin. His eyes blazed hot and bright. I smiled.
“Oh, this is my mate councillors.” I chuckled softly. The male beside me arched a brow. Nix held out one claw. I grasped it. He drew me into his side, crushing me against his chest.
“Where are our cubs?” He growled into my ear. I smirked.
“Koi has them,” I whispered. He kissed the top of my head.
“I am so sorry, Kitten.” He murmured. I sucked in a breath burying my face against his furred chest fighting off tears.
“Hello, cub,” Hart growled. Nix held out his claw.
“Damn, look at your face! Can you forgive me, uncle?”
“You had a parasite in your head, there is nothing to forgive you for. Haze will say the same thing. Worry not, when she heard the results from your scan. She was furious and begged Luca to have everyone checked.” Hart stated shaking his nephew's claw. Nix held me tighter with one strong arm.
“Please tell me I was the only one affected?” Nix asked. Hart nodded.
“Good. Councillors welcome to the Therros colony. Taiga Yasi, thank you. I am in your debt.” Nix said bowing his head. The female in the wheelchair smiled.
“You are very welcome Nixim. A front-row seat for the destruction of the Sumi will repay this act tenfold.” She said her voice once more floating into our minds.
“If you wish,” Nix replied. The other councillors nodded.
“A feast in your honour has been prepared,” Hart stated with a smile. The door behind Mex opened, Holon appeared, his face pinched, eyes wild. Nix lent against the bed with one hip.
“I owe you penance Holon, you will come to me later. What is it?” he growled.
“As you command. Forgive the intrusion. A Sumi cruiser has handed in the field sire. They are demanding an audience with our sovereign.” The army commander reported. I turned my head to face the council, my eyes shining a bright blue. Sagan grinned.
“Have at it.” He said.
“Don’t make too much of a mess my love,” Nix said as he looked down into my face. He kissed my head as the other councillors nodded. I tore out of the room, Mex, and Holon on my heels.
We reached the fields in time to see several Sumi guards forcing Therros females into the dirt. I let loose a scream of rage. The Therros army flanked me.
“You are not welcome here!” I yelled advancing on our foe.
“We demand to speak with the leader of the Therros!” The high chancellor of the Sumi yelled arrogantly. I remembered him from my time on the ship, after Brag, Reggie and I had been captured.
“You’re looking at her. You, sir, are trespassing on Dragoon without authorisation and in front of the Intergalactic Council too. Tsk, tsk.” I growled with a menacing grin. The high Chancellor grew pale as he spotted the council members standing further back with my mate.
“Nixim Kane, control your mate!” He yelled.
“No. I rather like her like this. Sexy as hell.” He yelled back bringing a roar of approval from the surrounding Therros. I attacked without warning. Shifting on the run. I hit the Sumi leader with incredible force. The Therros army took the guards and seized the ship with ease. Sagan stepped forward a moment before I ripped out the male’s throat.
“Ah, Queen Luciana. A moment, if you will permit?” He asked striding forward. I growled under my breath, my heavy body holding him in the dirt. He coughed and spluttered.
“Is it not Therros tradition for an enemy to fight to the death in the great arena?” Sagan enquired.
“Yes,” Nix answered dryly. I let loose a frustrated roar and leapt away from the Sumi. I hissed at Nix. He shrugged.
“Sorry kitten, it’s tradition.” He replied rolling his eyes.
“Moken get on your feet,” Sagan said. Holon and another pulled him up, they cuffed his hands behind his back.
“Take him to the arena,” Nix ordered. The crowd cheered. I paced beside the ship, still agitated. As queen, I was not allowed to fight in the arena. The laws of our people had tied my claws again and I was not happy. The creature had almost destroyed my mate.
“Kitten, are you coming?” Nixim asked waiting for me. Unable to shift back to my natural form, as I was too angry I stalked over to my mate walking beside him. I jumped up onto my throne and lay down, curling my tail around in front of me. Nix by my side looked down at me. I made a chuffing noise in the back of my throat.
“I know you wanted to kill him kitten.” He murmured leaning into me. I bared my teeth at him in displeasure.
“You need a champion.” Hart murmured from beside my chair. I growled in the back of my throat, with an evil glint in my eyes I sat up. My head turned slowly, I met Jegs gaze. The grey launched to his feet, a wide grin crossing his face. Candy chuckled at her mate’s glee. He kissed her soundly before launching himself over the guard rail. Jeg strode over to stand in front of us.
“My Queen, it is an honour to champion you this day,” Jeg stated formally, loud enough for the assembled crowd to hear.
“It is customary for the Queen to grant a favour,” Cleo whispered. I bit into the pad on my claw. Jeg lent forwards, I pressed it to his smoke coloured chest. My paw print shimmered with a faint blue light. The crowd gasped when the light faded, a white paw print the exact image of my claw remained. I turned my head to peer up at Nix. His brows were raised in surprise.
“That’s new.” He muttered. Jeg grinned.
“Makes me look tough.” He stated wringing a laugh from his mate. The chuffing cough coming from my throat sounding suspiciously like a chuckle. I finally calmed down enough to shift back to my natural form. I placed my claw into my mate’s. He squeezed it gently.
“My Queen, I thank you for this opportunity.” The head of Nix’s guard finished, bowing his head. I nodded, smoothing one claw over my knee. The small stretchy suit I wore keeping me for being completely naked.
“Have at it. Oh, and Jeg. He does not leave the arena alive.” Nix ordered his eyes glowing with bright blue savagery. Jeg pivoted on his foot and rolled his shoulders. The Intergalactic Council took their seats beside me.
“My Lord Nixim, the order has been sent to our armies. The Sumi and the remainder of the Zeg will be hunted down and either imprisoned or killed.” Sagan reported smoothly. A feral smile crossed my mate's face. The Sumi high chancellor backed away from Jeg slowly. The way he moved belied the belief the male was an inept fighter. My head tilted to one side as I watched closely. Jeg cast a glance in my direction. He frowned before seeing what I did. The male Therros suddenly looked happier to be in the arena. He skipped forwards.
“Moken is the high Chancellor, right?” I whispered as Jeg swung his sword causing the other male to dance backward before lunging a spear towards the Therros once more.
“He is,” Nix replied drawing circles with one talon in the fur on my claw.
“He’s the boss?” I asked. Nix frowned and looked to me.
“No, there is a King. Harmol. We have never met.” My mate stated, he arched one brow.
“We are at war, are we not?”
“We are now. What has you worried?” Nix was no longer distracted, he focused on me fully.
“Moken knows I am from earth. You don’t think he would go after my family, do you?” I whispered. Nix launched to his feet.
“Jeg, stop playing with him. We have work to do.” Nix ordered. Jeg shrugged, ripped the spear from the Sumi’s hands, and stabbed him. The spear through the chest propped up his opponent, the spear point digging into the ground. Jeg raised his sword and lopped off Moken’s head. He crossed the space between us and bowed his head.
“Thanks, Jeg,” I called. He grinned, nodded, and walked to his mate. Candy hugged him. The council was looking to Nix.
“We need temporary permission to retrieve Luca’s family from Earth. We think Harmol will make a play for them.” My mate explained gravely. Taiga Yasi gasped, one hand going to her mouth.
“He would too. Harmol is crazy enough to try and would use the Callites to achieve it.” She said worry lacing her tone.
“We grant you permission Nixim, twenty-four hours in the no-fly zone. Our ship is in orbit around Dragoon. We will take you into the NFZ to retrieve your mate’s kin, then you will all say goodbye to earth and that part of the universe, forever.” Sagan stated seriously. Nix looked down at me. I climbed to my feet.
“Nix, this time you can stay home. I will retrieve my family. I will not fight you on this, I’ll just have another Dragoon fly knock you out.” I called over my shoulder as I walked away. Mex and Koi walked behind me with the cubs laughing.
“You’re hilarious!” Nix yelled grinning.
****
I stood on the observation deck of the Lazare. The Intergalactic Councils battle cruiser. I looked down on my former planet with awe and reservation. The silver ring on my finger warmed suddenly. I frowned, swiping my claw over it. The face of my cousin Mikey appeared in front of me. I grinned showing off sharp white teeth.
“Hey cuz,” I said. Mickey gaped in shock.
“Luca! Is that you?” He breathed. I nodded.
“Sure is, pretty cool huh? I was just about to call you.” I laughed. Mickey breathed out in a rush.
“What are our chances of you coming to get us? I’m with mum. The other boys, they were killed, Luca. Dad took them out. He has a huge contract on our heads. He’s vowed to kill mum in front of me. God, Luca. It’s so messed up. I’m sorry I called you, I just don’t know what to do. I don’t want mum hurt.” He murmured. The doors behind me opened and Mex strolled in.
“The bridge picked up the rings signature. We have his location. Are you ready?” The huge male asked. I nodded.
“Are you alone?” I asked my cousin. He shook his head.
“We’re in a hotel room. Mum is sitting at the table; she hasn’t said a word in weeks. I’m worried about her Luca. I don’t know how much more of this she can take.” He replied.
“Hang in there,” I said as I followed Mex along the corridor to the transporter. I ended the communication with a jab of my claw. Standing next to Mex, I watched as we became transparent. A moment later we appeared in the hotel room scaring the wits out of my cousin. He reached for his gun. Mex growled, stepping towards him. I grinned. Mikey suddenly laughed, relieved. He rushed forwards and grabbed me in a hard hug.
“Look at you! I can’t believe it, you’re a cat!” He crowed. Mex made an amused sound in the back of his throat.
“Therros, not cat. This is Mex. Mex, Mikey, my cousin. Mike, get your stuff.” I said walking over to crouch at the knee of the woman sitting at the table, staring out the window. I placed one claw on her knee. Startled she looked down. She met my gaze and suddenly cupped my face.
“I know your eyes! These eyes are my Luciana’s.” She gasped, her hands trembling against my fur.
“Aliens Aunty, there were Aliens,” I whispered.
“I always wanted a cat.” Tears coursed down her cheeks, she laughed and sobbed, wrapping her arms around me. I held her gently as she cried into my fur.
“Come with me? Let me show you this incredible life. I want you to see the universe. Will you come to meet my husband and children? Live with us amongst the Therros. Thrive with us.” I murmured. Aunt Rosa gasped, leaning away to see my face properly.
“Children! Oh, oh gracious! Of course, Mikey get the bags. Luciana is taking us to meet her family. We are going into space.” She cried drying her tears on the tissue in front of her. Excitement brightened her eyes and brought colour back to her cheeks.
“You can never come back. There are a couple of other things to discuss but we can cover those later.” I stated hesitantly. Aunt Rosa stood, drawing me up with her.
“Good. I am done with this life. I lost the other boys. I refuse to lose Mikey or you Luca. Gianni can roast in hell for all I care. We can leave immediately.” I looked over my shoulder to my cousin. He and Mex were holding suitcases and several bags. I unclipped the device from my hip.
“We’re ready,” I told the transporter room.
“Say goodbye.” Mex murmured. I grabbed my aunt and pulled her over to stand with Mike and Mex.
“Good riddance.” Rosa laughed while her body became transparent.
We appeared in the transporter room within seconds. The male behind the control saluted Mex. The huge Therros looked down at my cousin.
“This way, I’ll show you to your rooms. Welcome aboard the Galactic Battlecruiser Lazare.” He said. My family followed quickly in his wake. Aunt Rosa casting several worried glances over her shoulder to make sure I was still behind her. I quickened my pace until I was by her side.
“We can resume our daily runs together,” I said drawing another laugh.
“I would love that. Running is so freeing.” She admitted. I grinned. Mex arched one brow at me.
“Our quarters are large enough to house us all,” I stated.
“I had the same thought.” He replied as the door to our suite swished open. Mex turned towards one of the doors to the right. He deposited the luggage on the floor beside the bed.
“Lady Rosa, if it will please you to take this room. Luca is the next one over.” Mex told my aunt. She looked up at him with wide eyes.
“Excuse me if I am stepping over a line but, you look a great deal like a Main Coon.” Rosa was hesitant and intimidated by the hulking male. Mex’s smile spread across his face, humour lit his yellow eyes.
“I am half Main Coon and Puma. You have a good eye. What gave me away?” He teased. Rosa relaxed.
“The tufts on your ears.” She replied in a stage whisper. I chuckled, clapping the male on one of his thick, muscled arms. I spied Mike sitting on the side of his bunk, his head in his hands. I knocked on the door frame. His head snapped up.
“Ah, Luca.” He murmured. I walked over and perched on his bed beside him.
“Where did it go wrong?” I asked quietly, grateful to Mex for distracting Rosa. Mike sighed, he ran one hand through his hair, agitated.
“The old man was in prison. Mum and I were relocated within the witness protection program, as were the others. Two months ago, Dad pulled off an escape. He busted out four others including Jarrod Matthews.” He began.
“I told you to kill that f*****g monster, Mike!” I growled unimpressed. My cousin nodded.
“I didn’t get a chance. Everything went so fast, then they were in prison. We were alright, for months. Then it all went bad. Joseph was the first, Dad and Jarrod gunned him down in the middle of the street. David’s throat was cut, and he was left to bleed out in the back seat of a cab and Henry, h-he was blown to pieces by a pipe bomb when he started his car. The agent in charge of us showed up. He told us to pack quickly, they were moving us. He told me what happened. They received a letter, there was a picture of mum shopping at the local market and one of me getting a coffee before work. I can’t lose my mum Luca.” Mike cried softly. I wrapped my arms around him tightly.
“You’re safe from Gianni now. He can’t get to either of you. I am not saying, coming with me will be safe, cause it’s kind of not.” I admitted. Mike sat back, he wiped his eyes with his hands.
“What do you mean?”
“Well, we’re kind of in a war right now. The ship we’re on belongs to the Intergalactic Council. This galaxy is a no-fly zone because humans are still babies compared to all the other races. There is a couple of races the Therros are at war with. One is the Sumi and the other the Zeg. Long story short, the Sumi made a huge mistake and made the Council and the Therros very angry. The council gave me permission to come and get my family, just in case the Sumi decided to go after you.” I stood up and paced across the room. I pressed a button on the wall. A panel slid up revealing the darkness of space and the stars shining in the distance.
“Luca.” I turned to see Mex in the doorway.
“Yeah.”
“Rosa is asleep. Mike, I suggest you get some rest. We will reach Dragoon in a few hours. It will be morning when we arrive. I doubt you will get any sleep after that.” My companion warned. Mike nodded. He toed off his shoes and lay down on the bunk.
“Sleep well. I will not let anything happen to your mum. I promise.” I called leaving the room. The door slid shut behind me.
“Hungry?” I asked my companion. He nodded, rubbing the back of his neck. I sat down on the lounge and picked up the tablet screen. I ordered my meal and passed the device. Mex pressed several buttons before laying it back in its cradle. I leaned back with a sigh.
“Unburden yourself.” Mex crossed his arms over his wide chest. I drew my legs up, crossing them underneath me. I picked up a cushion, hugging it to my chest.
“If you bit Mike, would he be Puma or Main Coon?” I was curious. Mex looked thoughtful for several minutes.
“Honestly, I don’t know. Probably Main, I only have the colouring of a Puma. Is Rosa your aunt by blood or mating?” Mex stretched his legs out in front of him and used one claw to push his long brown hair back off his face.
“Mating. Gianni and my father were brothers.” I replied sadly.
“Your cousin is your blood. If he wants the bite, he can choose to be a panther.” He answered. A bell rang at one end of the room. Both our heads snapped around to peer across the room at the door. It swished open to revel our food delivery. Sagan smiled at us from the entrance.
“Sagan, welcome. Come in.” Mex called. The councillor stepped into the room, he crossed the floor and sat with us on the large crescent-shaped lounge. The server pressed a button on the end of the lounge, a table rose out of the floor. Mex quickly moved his feet.
“I took the liberty of bringing my food,” Sagan said. I chuckled.
“That’s good because Mex and I almost ran into a problem. With you here, we do not have to move to different parts of the room.” I admitted slyly. Mex grinned. Understanding dawned on Sagan’s face. He drummed his fingers on the table.
“That’s right, male and female Therros do not eat together unless mated.”
“Precisely. Thank you.” I called to the server who bowed as he escaped out the door. Mex sniffed my plate before handing it to me. I lifted one brow.
“I have seen your mate fight. When he asks me to protect you, I do it. I have a healthy dose of self-preservation and I happen to love having my spine inside my body.” The huge male replied to my unspoken question. Sagan laughed, saluting us with his drink.
“Good to know,” I remarked saluting the male with my fork.
After dinner, we retired to our rooms for a couple of hours’ sleep. I woke to the buzzer sounding on the door.
“Luca!” Mex called through the door of my room. I launched out of bed, the portal swished open.
“What’s up?” I asked my body tense.
“We have arrived. Reggie is here with the Styxx. Lazare is staying in orbit; the council has a war to lead.” Mex stated.
“Yup got it. Give me a minute to wake up. I’m still in a coma. My body is on the bed, you’re currently speaking with my astral form.” I said with a yawn. My friend chuckled.
“Scare you awake, did I?”
“Yup. I was dead.” I growled arching my back. I stretched, both of us wincing when my joints popped. Mex handed me one of the steaming mugs he held in one claw. I made an appreciative growl in the back of my throat. I took a mouthful and swallowed with bliss.
“Cheers,” I said putting the mug on the table by the door. I quickly braided my hair. Mex shook his head.
“How do you do that? I need a mirror.” He sounded impressed. I grinned.
“I taught myself. I had to. After my mother died, it was only my dad. He tried to do my hair, but it always ended up in a huge tangle. My form of self-preservation.” I picked up my coffee and drained the contents. The door beside us opened to reveal Rosa. She spied us and smiled. I held out one arm. She hugged me.
“How did you sleep?” Mex asked with a smile.
“It was wonderful. That bed is very comfortable. Did you both sleep?” Rosa turned worried eyes in my direction.
“Yes, we got a couple of hours. Speaking of, better wake Mikey. We are about to change ships.” I told her. Rosa nodded and strode across the room. She knocked sharply on the door.
“Michelangelo Soritolo wake up!” She called. Mex and I chuckled softly when the door opened. Mikey was laughing at his mother as he kissed her cheek.
“I see you’re feeling better Mumma?” He greeted bending down to kiss her other cheek. She cupped his face.
“I am. Luca has always cheered me up and Mex is delightful. Are you ready? We are changing ships.” My Aunt and cousin spoke softly, not realising we Therros possessed exceptional hearing.
We each grabbed bags and headed out into the hall. Mex led the way back to the transporter room. Several of the council stood waiting. Sagan bowed low. His nose almost touching his knees.
“It has been a pleasure. We hope to see you again soon.”
“The Therros thank you for your assistance and I thank you personally for allowing me to retrieve my family. The council is always welcome in the Therros colony.” I replied returning the bow. Faces split with smiles as we gained the platform.
We appeared in the cargo hold. Reggie grinned. He clapped claws with Mex and turned to me.
“I am so glad you’re back. Nix is driving us crazy. Ferrin threatened to eat him if he didn’t stop pacing.” The captain of the Styxx reported. I laughed hugging the Calico.
“It’s nice to hear he missed me.” I chortled.
“Will you allow me to know your family?” Reg asked softly, eyeing my Aunt and cousin curiously.
“Of course, Aunt Rosa, Mike. This is Captain Reggie of the Styxx. Reg, Rosa, and Mike.” Rosa stepped forward holding out her hand. The male bent at the waist, he lifted her hand to his mouth, lightly kissing it. He nodded to Mike once, standing tall again. Rosa, charmed by his actions smiled brightly.
“Come, if we don’t get you back I fear what Nix will do,” Reg muttered sourly. I laughed motioning for my family to follow.
We strapped ourselves into seats in the common room. Rosa and Mike looked apprehensive.
“Five minutes. You’ll be fine.” I assured them. A brief spurt of turbulence vibrated the floor beneath us before we landed. Mex and I stood up, gathering bags. Reggie met us at the door.
“Ready?” He asked motioning for us to follow. We walked quickly to the cargo hold, we waited as the ramp lowered. Holon and Brag were waiting, they called a greeting to us. I lifted one claw in a wave, stepping onto the blue grass. Rosa and Mike looked around with wide eyes. Mex gave them a soft nudge forward. I grasped Rosa’s hand in one claw. Holon and Brag took their bags.
“Luciana, the sky is green and the grass blue,” Rosa whispered.
“Like stepping through the looking glass.” I chuckled shooting her a grin. She breathed out in a rush. I hugged her and stopped beside a floating machine. It was a shallow box, several feet long with six seats and an operator's console.
“When did this happen? I’ve only been gone for three days.” I murmured. Brag leaned close.
“It’s a transport. Hart designed it, this is a prototype. I am a little afraid of it. He brought it down, said we could carry the luggage on it.” He whispered.
“You’ve not even tested it?” I murmured eyeing the cheetah suspiciously. He shook his head. I rolled my eyes.
“Go on, shuffle your cogs, spots.” I murmured. Brag chuckled, stepping back. Mex grabbed Rosa and Mike by their shoulders. I looked at the transport, bending down I peered under it, studying all angles. Finally, I climbed up and sat behind the console. Hart had helpfully named all the buttons. The console had a joystick. I pressed the ignition button, the machine roared to life. I took hold of the stick. There was a brake pedal on the floor in front of me. I gave the stick a tap, the transport crawled forwards. I wrapped my hand around it and moved it towards me. The transport glided smoothly. I maneuvered it around the empty field, checking its range of motion before coming back to my friends. I pulled to a stop in front of the grinning faces.
“Jump in! This is awesome. I can’t believe you didn’t try it.” I laughed.
“We’re not as brave as you Luca,” Reggie called as he, Brag, and Holon tossed the bags in the centre.
“You lie, you mean, you are not as stupid.” I laughed over my shoulder, wringing chuckles from the males. Mex helped Rosa into her seat, he took the place by her side. Mike and Reggie sat together in the next row. Brag and Holon took up the rear.
“Hold onto your fur,” I called over my shoulder. The transport shot forward, down the main street of the small city. Rosa laughed, the wind whipping through her hair. Males and Females alike waved and yelled a greeting as we passed. I brought the transport to a stop, a moment later. In front of my house. I turned around, grinning from my seat.
“That was fantastic! You have to try it!” I cried. The males laughed jumping out, they retrieved the bags. Rosa and Mike’s smiles died as they spotted the huge hulking male Panther striding down the front stairs.
A chuffing sound bursting from my throat. I launched myself across the yard and into the arms of my mate. Nix curled himself around me, holding tightly.
“Welcome home kitten.” He whispered. I leaned back and cupped his face. I peered into his amber eyes.
“I missed you,” I replied kissing him quickly.
“I missed you too, Kitten.” Nix murmured pulling me in for another hug.
“Nixim Kane, Rosa Soritolo and you have already met Mike.” I introduced my mate to my Aunt. Rosa’s hand shook as she held it out to him. Nix grasped it, lifting it to his lips he kissed the back of her hand softly.
“Aunt Rosa, it is pleasure. Luca has told me a lot about you. I feel as though I know you already. Mike, good to see you again. How was your trip?” I loved my mate more than ever at that moment. Rosa relaxed as they chatted with Nix about their first trip through space. A yowl of frustration sounded from behind me. I spun to see Nadia and Maliki standing at the top of the stairs. The baby gate stopping their decent.
“Oh! How precious! Mikey, look at them. Luca are those two darlings, your children?” Rosa cried one hand to her chest.
“Darlings, you must mean demons.” Nix murmured with a chuckle, drawing a laugh from the males behind him. I walked up the stairs and lifted my two cubs into my arms. They held tightly, snuggling into my fur.
“Did you have a good sleep?” I murmured breathing in their scent. Both nodded. Koi emerged from within the shadow of the house.
“Welcome home Luca, you have been missed.” The female puma murmured, she stepped into me, wrapping her arms around me.
“Are you alright?” I whispered.
“Strangely, I have missed my mate. I have been anxious for his return.” Koi replied her gaze finding Mex as he stood talking to Nix. Mex’s head turned, his eyes beginning to glow. I watched the big male fight down his instinctive response.
“Look what I do to him, Luca. Mex cannot be himself.” Koi pulled the cowl of her robe over her head, hiding her face once more.
“Will you go to him? Even if you stood beside him, let your male know he’s yours.” I asked her softly. Koi nodded. My family made their way towards us. Rosa and Mike smiled down at my cubs. Nadia immediately reached for Mike. He swept her out of my arms, holding her gently on his hip. She looked over her shoulder grinning up at her father. Nix frowned.
“She is very trusting,” Rosa commented softly a tinge of worry lacing through her voice.
“Do you think so?” Nix asked seriously. I rolled my eyes.
“Nadia, why do you like uncle Mike?” I asked. Nadia turned her head, wide amber eyes blinked.
“Sniffing mummy.” She answered cheerfully with a wide grin. Maliki leaned forwards and sniffed Mike too.
“Yeah, me mummy.” He giggled around a yawn. I arched a brow in Nix’s direction. A soft feminine laugh sounded behind me. The cowl covering Koi, shaking.
“Oh, Nix. Nadia is as suspicious of people as you are.” Koi chimed in. She leaned into Mex. One of her claws wrapped around his arm holding herself up as she laughed. Nix smiled, his eyes softening at witnessing the female’s mirth. He nodded to Mex, who was looking down at his mate with a mixture of surprise and pleasure. I brushed away a tear to see my friend so happy. Maliki launched himself from my arms to Koi. She caught him with both claws, lifting him high she spun around with him. Both laughing cheerfully.
“Would you like to stay with us or would you like a place of your own? God knows this building is big enough.” I muttered. I swear it grew while I was away. I thought.
“If there is enough room here Luca, perhaps for a little while. Until we get settled.” My aunt replied hesitantly. Mike nodded. He bent down and put Nadia on the ground. She immediately took off inside. We followed at a slower pace.
“How was your trip?” Koi asked Mex as they entered the palace.
“It was good. Earth is an interesting place. They have metal contraptions, like the transport outside. Only, they have wheels holding them up off the ground. Their communication devices are handheld and they use sheets of material to dry themselves.” He spoke in a low voice, almost a conspirator’s whisper. Koi pushed back her hood, her eyes wide. She put one claw on his arm.
“Really? How curious. I suppose the strips of cloth are because humans do not have fur. The transports have wheels. How strange. Did you see anything else?”
“I did.” Mex pulled two small tubes from the bag on his shoulder. He handed them to Koi. She smiled and studied them closely. She twisted the lid off and held it to her nose.
“That smells lovely. Luca! What is this?” She called. I turned around. Koi held out the little tubes. I grinned.
“Shampoo and Conditioner. For your hair. I miss this stuff.” I held up one and then the other. Nix plucked them out of my claw.
“Holon, take these to Candy and have her synthesize more.” My mate ordered passing the small cargo off to his guard. Holon backed out of the room, striding away. I winced.
“Sorry,” I whispered. Koi chuckled.
“Nosy Therros. Precisely the reason I grabbed two.” Mex reached into his bag and pulled out another pair. Koi grinned, clutching them to her chest.
“Thank you.” She murmured.
Our children were asleep. I was exhausted. I stood under the shower washing the synthesized conditioner from my hair. I stifled a groan of joy. My hair was soft again and now, so was my fur. I loved it. With a sigh, I turned off the water and stepped out onto the drying grate. I remembered the expression on Rosa’s face when I told her, she would never use a towel again. Mike had laughed, joy lit his eyes for the first time in years. I stepped off the grate and stood before the mirror. I was Therros now, though I still looked like me. My facial features where almost the same. The only difference, I was covered in luxurious black fur, my eyes were blue, my hair which was once red, was now so dark it was almost black, and my ears relocated to the top of my head. I picked up my toothbrush and quickly cleaned my teeth. I emerged into my bedroom, walked to my dresser, and pulled on one of the shirts I had made for Nix, he was only now getting a chance to wear. My mate was not in our room. I padded out into the hallway, following it as it weaved around guest rooms, conference and staterooms, the living room, sitting room, and dining rooms until I reached Nix’s office. I stopped before the partially open door, hearing voices inside.
“You need to get your head on straight cub,” Hart growled at his nephew. I knew I should have backed away and left them to their conversation, but I was curious. What was going on? I wondered.
“What if something happens to them? If I lost Luca and the cubs, it would shatter me. As it was, being a prisoner, I was terrified thinking about what might have been happening to them.” Nix growled.
“What is the real problem here?”
“I am not the same male I was when I left,” Nix admitted gruffly. I opened the door silently. Nix had his back to me. Hart met my gaze. He gave me a short bow and left, returning to his mate. I crossed the room, dousing the light. Nix spun around.
“Kitten, you scared the s**t out of me.” He growled. I grasped his claw. Holding his hand, he had no choice but to follow me. I closed the door to our room, with a shove Nix over-balanced, falling backward on the bed. I straddled his hips. My claws diving into his hair, I pulled his face to mine. I kissed him, softly. Small barely there, brushes of my lips to his. Running my hands down his muscled arms I drew his claws up to my hips. He grasped me firmly, pulling me closer. I gazed into his eyes. I was dismayed to see they were not glowing. I dropped my arms. Nix frowned, he lifted my chin with one claw.
“What is it?” He whispered smoothing the fur beside my eyes.
“You’re not kissing me back Nix. I suppose I just assumed you would still find me attractive. Have I changed so much in the time we have been apart?” I growled in frustration pushing off his lap. As I started to walk away, I suddenly froze. Nix had grabbed me by the tail. I gasped, unable to move. He gave a little tug. I stepped backward. Two claws grasped my hips firmly. I was drawn down onto my mate’s lap. My back pressed against a heavily muscled chest. One claw suddenly ripped the shirt from my body. A purr burst from my lips as the claws that once held me captive cupped my breasts. I arched into those hands with a soft moan. Something sharp pressed into my shoulder. Nix’s teeth nipped me. I hissed.
“Therros are as different from each other as humans. Not all Therros can control themselves and some just don’t bother.” He whispered, his voice deep and gravelly. One claw moved from my breast sweeping down my body, dipping between my legs. I cried out softly, my hips undulating against his hand. Nix’s arousal was pressed against my lower back. I moved my tail, curling it around the thick length. My tail stroked him firmly. Nix hissed against the back of my neck, with a growl he spun me around, pinning me to the bed. He gripped my hips hard, taking me from behind with almost savage force. I was gasping for breath, the sensations he woke in me almost too much to bear. The hammering of his hips into mine slowed to a smooth glide. Nix wrapped his arms around my waist. He drew me up against his chest. I let my head fall back, he stroked my throat as he withdrew. He lay his long, muscled body down beside me. His eyes were glowing brightly in the darkness. He cupped one of my breasts. Lifting my leg, he drew it over his hip. I straddled him. Holding my hips, he brought me down on top of him, spearing into me. My body arched, head thrown back. I gripped his arms as I moved, riding the male, I loved with everything within me. Nix growled with approval when I cupped my breasts, teasing my n*****s into hard pebbles.
“Come here.” He snarled, sitting up. He drew one into his mouth sucking hard. I cried out softly, riding him harder. Nix lay back, gripping my hips again. I was almost there, grinding against him.
“That’s it. Come for me, Kitten.” Nixim growled baring his teeth. I opened my mouth on a silent scream as pleasure exploded with me. My mate shuddered, his guttural groan announcing his release. I collapsed onto his chest. He wrapped his arms tightly around me. Our hearts thundering. Nix rolled us over, he arranged me against his side. Covering us with the sheet.
“Kitten.” He murmured.
“Hmm.” My eyes were closed, my body relaxed.
“Before I got carried away. What were you doing?” He was looking down at me. My eyes popped open. I turned over onto my stomach, to see him better.
“When I thought, you didn’t want me?” I asked. He shook his head.
“No, before that. You were sitting in my lap.” I felt my face heat under my fur. Embarrassment rolled through me.
“I was trying to make love to my mate. To show you that you are the most incredible male I have ever met, and I am madly in love with you.” I admitted. Nixim’s eyes lit up again. He leaned over to kiss me.
“I love you too Kitten.” He murmured against my lips.
Nix and I were sitting in the kitchen giving the cubs their breakfast when Aunt Rosa walked in.
“Good morning.” She called cheerfully. Nix chuckled.
“Morning, sleep well?”
“I did. It was the first time in years. I lay my head on the pillow and slept like the dead. Not a worry in the world. It was wonderful.” She replied. I passed her the spoon to continue feeding Nadia. I bustled around the kitchen making coffee. I looked over at my mate.
“Steak and eggs?” I asked him. He smiled.
“Sounds great. Give me five seconds and I will help you.” Aunt Rosa was shocked. She stared with her mouth open. Nix cleaned up Maliki and picked up his plate. Coming alongside me, he washed up the small dishes.
“I thought we had eggs. I need to run down to the markets. Will you watch the cubs?” I said shaking my head at the contents of our refrigerator. The kitchen door opened. Mex and Koi stepped inside. Mex was carrying a basket filled with large purple eggs.
“Morning. I saw we were out of eggs.” Koi announced with a smile. I grinned.
“Wonderful, I was about to make steak and eggs. Are you eating?” I reached under the bench for the large frying pan.
“Absolutely, especially if you’re cooking Luca,” Mex stated slapping claws with Nix. Both males grinned turning to a silent Rosa.
“Luca is an amazing cook,” Nix told her beaming.
“Aunt Rosa taught me. She is the master and I am the student, feel me?” I whispered loudly enough for her to hear. Rosa chuckled. When both males looked hopeful in her direction. She stood up and pushed up her sleeves. Crossing the kitchen, she washed her hands.
“Get the steak, Luca. I’ll do the eggs in a moment.” Rosa ordered.
“Oh yes! Aunty sponsored breakfast.” I said grinning and opened the fridge.
Mex and Nix were adamant Rosa should start up a cooking school. Mike had walked in while she was cooking. He kissed her on one cheek. Turning, he hugged me tightly.
“Mum hasn’t laughed like this in two years Luca. Dad almost destroyed her soul completely. Thank you.” He whispered. Koi covered her mouth. A tear running down her cheek. Mex squeezed her claw, gently. Mike stepped back. Nix grinned.
“Sit down Mike and tell us about yourself.” He called indicating the chair at the other end of the table. Mike sat down as I placed a cup of coffee in front of him.
“Thanks, Luca.” He murmured gratefully. A knock sounded on the kitchen door. I turned to motion for Holon to enter.
“Morning Holon, coffee?” I asked. He grinned.
“Thank you, that would be great.” He said stepping into the kitchen. He bowed his head to Nix. Crossing the room, he bowed to me as well. I handed him his cuppa. Rosa and Mike watched curiously. Holon smiled at my Aunt.
“Forgive my ignorance, but when you bow. Is that a formal Therros greeting custom?” Rosa stirred the scrambled eggs in the bowl, not once looking away from the ginger army commander.
“No ma’am. I bow to Nix and Luca because they are our royal family. The panthers have always ruled within our society. Nix is our King, Luca our queen.” He replied cheerfully, not in the least put out to be asked the question. Holon took a sip and groaned. He saluted me with his cup.
“You make the best coffee, Luca.” He praised.
“It’s the reason I mated her.” Nix teased. I caught the bowl of eggs as it slipped out of Rosa’s hands. I set it on the bench. Mike stood up, he bent down peering into his mother’s face.
“Mumma, are you alright?” He murmured gently. Rosa stood up, she faced Nix. Tears running down her face. Nix shot to his feet. He crossed the room with swift strides. He cupped her face.
“I have killed for her and I will again. I would offer you a place here, as one of the royal family. You are not Luca’s blood, but your son is. That is enough for me. Holon, Mex, what say you?” Both males stood tall, they clapped their fists to their hearts.
“It would be a privilege to have Lady Rosa as a Panther,” Holon stated. Rosa looked up at Mex. He shook his head.
“Rosa would make a sensational Main Coon.” He murmured. Rosa’s eyes lit up. They were her favourite cat on earth.
“Thank you for your offer Nix, but I would love to be a Main Coon.” She breathed. I chuckled, sliding an arm around her.
“No contest Nix, Rosa is crazy about Main Coon’s. Aunty, why were you so sad?” I asked gently.
“She wasn’t sad kitten, Rosa is happy.” Nix murmured. Rosa nodded.
“You are a very inciteful man Nixim.” She replied. I rolled my eyes, causing sniggers to erupt around us.
“Occasionally,” I whispered on a laugh. Rosa stepped closer to Mex.
“How do I do this?” She was determined. Mike mirrored his mother.
“How do we do this, you mean? First, we finish making breakfast.” Mex replied with a teasing grin. I arched one brow at Mex.
“Main Coons can bite their mate. For instance, if Koi wanted she could become Main Coon with my bite. We are the only species, apart from the panther able to convert another breed of Therros.” He explained.
“So, if I bit you, you would become a panther?” I asked. Mex nodded. I made a surprised noise in the back of my throat. Rosa had returned to the stove and began cooking the eggs.
“Will I be as big as you? Or will I stay short like Luca?” Mike was curious, returning to his seat with the others. Nix chuckled when I turned to glare in my cousin’s direction.
“That’s my fault,” Hart called from the doorway. Cleo strode into the kitchen. She immediately placed her basket filled with bread and pastries on the bench and grabbed plates from the cupboard.
“Drives Luca crazy to be called short too.” Jeg laughed as he and Candy arrived. The latter laughing.
“Stop teasing, we love Luca travel-sized.” Candy shot me a grin. I could not help it. I laughed.
“You all suck,” I growled half-heartedly. Rosa leaned her head on my shoulder.
“I missed you too,” I whispered, kissing her cheek. She nodded going back to her eggs. The toast was cooked, and biscuits were placed on the table with the steak and eggs. We all sat, talking, and eating.
“Mumma, me too,” Maliki called. I cut a small piece of steak, put it on the table in front of him. He picked it up, sniffed it, and popped it into his mouth. He chewed and swallowed.
“More!” He grinned. Nix laughed grabbing another piece he handed it over. I passed one to our daughter, with the same response.
Once the kitchen was clean after our impromptu gathering. We all retired to the garden, where the twins chased Nix and Mike through the yard.
“Mex is going to bite you, Aunt. It will hurt, the pain will fade after a while.” I murmured. Rosa stood up. Koi grasped her hand.
“Hold on to me. It will be alright.” She whispered soothingly. Rosa closed her eyes. Mex struck fast. Rosa sucked in a pained breath. I wrapped an arm around her waist, lowering her into a chair.
“H-how long does the transformation take?”
“Don’t look at me, the council gave me a drug that we believe delayed it. It took me six months.” I stated.
“Jeg bit me at one in the afternoon. I woke the next morning a Therros.” Candy said sitting down next to me. I flashed her a grin. Rosa leaned back in her chair.
“You don’t have to become a Therros Mike, you can stay human,” Nix said. He had a cub under each arm, twirling them around. They shrieked, laughing hysterically. Mike chuckled, holding his arms out. Nix tossed Maliki to him. My son howled with laughter as his cousin caught him.
“I want to, this is a new life. I might as well, embrace it fully.” Mike replied. Mex grabbed my cousin and bit into his shoulder. Mike cried out in surprise. Nix grinned.
“Good to know.” He purred. Mex stepped away looking down at the male. Rosa frowned.
“What’s going on?” She asked Candy. The female grey peered over her head.
“Looks like Mex bit Mike. Good, that’s good.” She stated seriously.
“Luca, forgive the interruption, my queen.” I turned in my seat to find a female Leopard standing behind me. She bowed.
“Zia, what’s wrong? Are you alright?” I demanded standing up. I could smell the anxiety pouring off the female.
“Lady Cleo sent me to you. There is a problem in town. A female is calling you out ma’am. She says she is the rightful heir to the throne and your children are not.” She reported her voice shaking.
“What the hell is that supposed to mean?” Nix snarled passing the cubs to Mex. He stalked across the yard, pure rage radiating from his huge body.
“Calm down, love. Don’t shoot the messenger.” I placed one claw gently in the middle of his chest, stopping his advance on the female.
“Forgive me, sire, she is saying the cubs are not yours.” Zia bowed low.
“Oh s**t. It’s one thing to call out Nix, but to call out Luca. Well, that’s just bloody stupid. Everyone knows Luca has been coded. The female will not leave the arena alive or in one piece.” Jeg whispered watching my face twitch. I rolled my shoulders. My lips drawing back from my teeth as my jaw elongated. Nix smiled.
“Make a mess. I mean it kitten. Send a message to the rest of our pride. Apparently, they missed the first one.” He ordered savagely. I transformed into my full cat form. Rosa blinked, surprised.
“Can you all change like that?” She asked softly. Koi shook her head.
“No, this is a Luca thing. Surprised the hell out of us the first time too. It used to only happen when Luca was furious. She can control it now, mostly and the breaking bones don’t hurt as much anymore.” The puma murmured. Nix motioned for us to climb into the transport. Jeg took the controls. Nix held his children, following in my wake as I tore through the city. I shifted back to my Therros shape as I entered the arena. As queen, it was against the rules for me to fight unless my reign or that of my children were challenged. The female was Becca a Cheetah I helped save from the Sumi and Zeg.
“Hello, Becca,” I said walking forward with a steady gait. She moved, falling into a fighter’s stance. I put my hands behind my back. The crowd assembled in the arena gasped. Shooting each other worried looks. My family gathered, Nix sat in his chair. Our cubs were held by Koi and Mex.
“I challenge your heirs.” She hissed. I nodded.
“I know, let me ask you something before we do this. You’re not a fool. Who put you up to this?” My voice was gentle. I did not want to kill this female, unfortunately calling me out signed her death warrant. Nix would never allow her to live now. Becca lunged at me, I stepped aside in a fluid movement. Rosa gasped, one hand going to her mouth.
“Fear not. Luca is an incredible fighter.” Haze murmured, appearing by her side.
“She is not using her claws,” Mike asked turning to Hart. The old panther shook his head.
“No, when one challenges the rights of the queen it is done without bloodshed for as long as possible. Once blood, Luca’s blood, is spilled; Nixim will lose the grip he has on his control and the real threat will step into the ring with our King. If Luca is the one to draw blood first, she will face this female’s accomplice. Luca will face him alone and he will die a horrible death. Our King is savage, our queen is Therrom and unmatched on the field of battle.” Hart whispered in my cousin’s ear. Mike watched on in fear.
“I am so sorry Becca, you deserved better. You deserved not to be a pawn for the male controlling you. Had you come to me, I would have helped you.” I whispered. Becca’s eyes popped wide as my eyes began to glow. I moved swiftly; my claw embedded in her stomach without warning.
“Forgive me, my queen. I had no choice, my fear ruled me. He is a monster. He and his twin.” She uttered, her head falling onto my shoulder.
“I forgive you, Becca, rest in peace sweet,” I whispered as her last breath rattled from her mouth. I picked up her lifeless body and carried her to the other side of the arena. I lay her at the feet of my children.
“Kitten, she has a mate, my love,” Nix warned. I nodded and stood. I removed my shawl and laid it over the dead female.
“Yes, she told me. Becca also said he was a monster, he and his twin.” I replied softly.
“No, I killed him! I watched the light leave his eyes. Mex, how is this possible? My love, how is this possible? You avenged me!” Koi cried softly. Mex drew her into his strong arms. I turned slowly to peer over my shoulder.
“It’s not Selig. This is his brother.” I growled. The male laughed, a harsh sound echoing around the arena. He drew a dagger. Nix snarled.
“Are you sure you want to do away with the rules?” Hart called almost cheerfully. All eyes turned to him as if he were mad. Reggie and Brag chuckled, they had seen me dispatch the Sumi and Zeg with ease.
“I Belig hereby take up the challenge issued by my mate. I draw this weapon against the laws of the Therros because this female is not a Therros. Are you Luca? You are nothing but a human, bitten in.” He sneered.
“Good enough for me. Stupid male.” Nix laughed harshly. I slashed through the material of my skirt and wound it around my legs making pants.
“What goes on here? Hello Nix, I was under the impression the queen was not allowed to fight. Drives Luca bloody crazy too if I recall correctly.” Ferrin asked landing with his mate and son Brieeorg. Rosa and Mike stared at the huge Dragus with mouths hanging open.
“Belig and his mate made the unfortunate mistake of challenging our cubs right to the throne,” Nix replied. Brieeorg laughed.
“How entertaining. Three cows on Luca.” He called to his father. The huge green Dragus laughed.
“You’re insane, I would never bet against Luca. I am old, not stupid.” He called back. Belig frowned. I hissed and charged him. I moved so fast the crowds could hardly keep track of me. Belig spun around breathing fast, he lunged out with his dagger. My panther scream echoed around him. The fight lasted seconds. My fist punched through his back. I drew out his heart. Belig fell to the ground. Using my teeth, I ripped the heart apart, holding it in both hands.
“Does anyone else question the paternity of my children?” Nixim bellowed. All Therros fell to one knee. A savage growl came from my throat. Nix watched me closely. I threw the heart into the dirt.
Turning on my heel I stalked out of the arena. Heads bowed as I passed through the streets. I reached the palace.
I walked into the shower. I brushed my teeth until my gums hurt and lathered myself up, scrubbing for all I was worth. Trying to get the blood out of my fur. The shower door opened, Nix stepped inside.
“You’re clean Kitten, you’re clean. Stop, stop.” He murmured gently drawing me into his arms. I sobbed into his chest. He turned off the water and stepped with me onto the grate. With gentle hands, he dressed me and pulled on a pair of linen pants.
“Mummy needs you. She is very sad. We must snuggle her.” Nix told our cubs quietly. He lay me down in bed, his big body curled around my back. Nadia and Maliki snuggled into my chest.
“Mummy?” Nadia asked looking into my eyes.
“Yes, my love.”
“Did you brush your teeth?” She asked seriously. I nodded.
“Yes, I did.” I murmured.
“Good Mummy, you don’t want the stinky teeth,” Maliki stated. Nix chuckled into my neck. I smiled, pressing my nose to theirs.
“No, we don’t want the stinky teeth,” I whispered. Nix gently stroked my arm. We watched our cubs slowly succumb to sleep. Closing their bright little eyes, their breathing evened out.
“Kitten.” Nix murmured.
“Hmm.”
“Sleep.” I closed my eyes, willing my mind not to replay the events of the last few hours. I concentrated on my mate’s arms. The heat of his body pressed against my back, his scent flowing around me. I sighed, relaxing, drifting.
I awoke to the sounds of an argument. I opened my eyes, scanning the bedroom before climbing out of bed. I stuck my head around the corner into the cub’s room to find them asleep in their beds. Koi was checking in on them too. She smiled, crossing the room to my side. She wrapped her arms around me.
“Are you alright?” She murmured. I nodded.
“I’m fine, contrary to popular opinion, I hate killing. It tears me up inside.” I admitted. Koi hugged me again.
“I feel the same. I have lived through several battles when I was in the fields. Luca, who is arguing?” She asked looking around.
“I don’t know,” I said stepping out of her embrace. The door next to my friend’s room opened. Mex stepped out in nothing but a pair of long cotton pants. He rubbed one large claw over his face.
“What’s going on?” He asked. His deep voice rough from sleep. I shrugged.
“I don’t know, I was on my way to investigate,” I told him, sweeping the curtain aside to check outside. My eyes popped wide. Nix was standing on the front stairs, a crowd of male Therros gathered around him. I opened the door, coming out of the darkness. Several males began to growl threateningly until they recognised me. Someone swore under his breath, I realised it was Brag once I was closer.
“Sorry Luca, all I saw was a shadow behind Nix.” He said in greeting. My mate turned to watch my approach. When I stood by his side, I frowned.
“Is this a male-exclusive party? I can go back inside.” I asked in a serious tone.
“Please stay, it would be an honour to have you here too.” Kars one of the last Lynx replied. Several males shook their heads motioning for me to sit. I felt more than heard Mex behind me. I sat down on the stairs, meeting the gazes of all the Therros in front of me.
“We’re concerned. The coming battle with the Sumi and the Zeg. We lost not only our homes. We lost families, our pride, everything. We’ve worked so hard to rebuild our civilization.” A Puma Male, Jeppe stated stepping forward. Nix motioned for everyone to sit. He lowered himself to the bottom step, just below me.
“Does anyone else share these reservations?” Nix asked curiously. Several others nodded, hesitantly.
“Forgive me, my king. Luca, you have given all to our pride when the Helligan was captured. What do you think about the coming war?” Morrice a ginger enquired.
“I would never be offended by you asking my mate, her opinion.” Nix chuckled, leaning back. He picked up my hand, kissing my knuckles.
“My dad believed that if you ignored a bully, they would back off, grow bored with you.” I began.
“Where is your father now? Did you leave him on Earth?” Morrice asked. I shook my head.
“No, Morrice. The bully killed him.” I admitted softly, pain radiating out of me. Several soft chuffing noises called, comfortingly from the crowd. I shot them a small smile. With a sigh, I continued.
“Sometimes, you need to stand up for what you believe in. If we let the Sumi get away with this act, we may as well move back into their mines. When I was with the Dragus, they told me stories about our people. Thousands of years ago, before Therros as you know them, are. We were called Therrom. A race of people who could change their shape.”
“Like Luca.” Someone in the back whispered. I shot him a grin.
“It was said, we commanded the universe. Our people were space pioneers. We began the galactic council.” I told them looking each male in the eyes.
“We did?” Brag asked. I nodded.
“Yeah, sure did. During this time, the Therrom prospered. Our people stood tall.”
“What happened?” Mike asked coming out of the house. Mex grinned. I turned my head to see my cousin covered in white, black, and red fur, ears on top of his head with little white tufts coming from their points.
“Looking good there, kid.” Mex murmured clapping him on the back. Mike and Mex were the same height, though the new Therros was lean and not as muscled. Eyes popped wide, grins spread through the crowd.
“Viclor, the male my father was named for,” Nix replied. I nodded.
“Yes. Viclor the first made a deal with the Callites. Therrom had one serious flaw, their inability to see well at twilight. Our people were lured to a planet where we were all but destroyed.” I explained.
“Which planet?” Holon asked softly.
“Vent.” The males exchanged incredulous glances, each one frowning, their tails twitching in agitation.
“What was it about Vent, that almost destroyed us?” Mex asked, curious.
“The minerals in the soil, contaminated your DNA. It changed you so much, you were no longer able to shift to your base cat. I was not raised on Vent. I was a human, bitten in. I was not raised in Space. I was only with you for three months before I was bitten. I have Dr Leek working on it. If given the choice, would you stay as you are or return to the Therrom, you were?” I asked. Several males looked thoughtful.
“As for the war, go home. We will think on your words. We would never make such a decision without the advice of our pride.” Nix stated standing. The males climbed to their feet. As one, they bowed their heads, turned, and made their way to their homes.
“Reggie,” I called. The old calico turned.
“Nimia, what happened to her. I’ve not seen her.” I asked coming to stand with my friend. Brag squeezed his shoulder.
“She’s gone, Luca. While I was collecting you and your family. Nim killed herself. The memories of her life as a slave were too much for her.” He murmured. I sucked in a horrified breath. Reaching out I clasped his claw.
“I’m so sorry,” I whispered.
“I’d not seen her in a couple of months. She took to staying home and only ventured out occasionally for food. I tried to help her, Luca. Her mind was too far gone.” Reggie hung his head. I hugged him tightly, a little mewling yowl sounded from inside his shirt. I stepped hastily back.
“Oh my god!” I whispered. Reggie drew the side of his shirt open to reveal a new little Therros snuggled into his fur.
“She left me a son. I don’t know what I’m doing, Luca.” He admitted. I blinked, in shock.
“Oh, how precious. What is his name?” Aunt Rosa murmured appearing behind me. I growled a little in the back of my throat.
“Still the shortest bell at the ball,” I muttered looking up at my aunt who looked almost identical to her son. Rosa and Reggie chuckled. The calico scooped his son out of his shirt, handing him to my aunt. She curled the little bundle into her arms.
“He is lovely, Reggie. What is his name?” She breathed, clearly enamoured with the little bundle in her arms.
“He doesn’t have one, yet. I confess I brought him here to ask for help. I know nothing of young.” He began. Rosa smiled.
“I would be happy to help you if you like? Luca has her hands full with the twins. I-.” Rosa began hesitantly.
“Thank you, milady. I would appreciate your support.” Reg replied. Rosa breathed out a sigh of relief.
“Nix, mind adding Reggie and his newborn son to our household?” I asked over my shoulder. One panther and two Main Coon’s turned to look over at us with wide eyes. Mike chuckled.
“Oh no, mums got the baby. Not getting that cub back anytime soon there Reggie.” Mike called with a grin. The Calico suddenly grinned.
“We’re happy to have them, kitten,” Nix replied.
“He’s about the same size as Nadia was, come on. I think we can find something for him.” I said waving Reg inside. Aunt Rosa matched his pace, instinctively staying by his side as they followed me into the palace.
Reggie watched Rosa with deep contemplation, following her every move with his sharp yellow gaze. Rosa turned, shot him a smile, and waved him into the room. Reg stood next to her hesitantly. She spoke softly, giving the large male instructions. Nix curled his arms around me. I leaned my head against his chest.
“Kitten.” He murmured. I looked up, waiting.
“Not now Nix. We can discuss it in the morning. I do have something I want you to hear now, however.” I stated. Nix tensed.
“What is it?” He asked. Everyone in the room stilled, waiting for my reply.
“I am so sleeping in, you get to have the cubs.” I laughed. Nix relaxed. He hugged me to him, chuckling.
“Gods no, not the cubs.” He said in a soft mock cry, grinning down at me. He leaned down, kissing my head. I turned, catching sight of Koi waving me down the hallway. I stepped away from my mate and slipped into her room. The door closed, and I blinked. Koi was standing in a very revealing nightdress.
“Luca, d-do you think Mex will like it?” She asked hesitantly. I reached out, grasping her claws lightly.
“Honey, he’s a Therros male, your mate, and completely enamoured with you. You could wear a sack with a corn stalk on your head and he’d still think you were the most perfect female in the cosmos.” I said softly with a grin. Koi’s lips twitched, a smile spreading across her black and gold face.
“Really?” She whispered.
“Really. Now, remember. Communication is key. Tell him you want to try and if it doesn’t work, don’t freak. It’s alright. You can always try again later. It’s not the end of the world.” I explained. Koi nodded.
“Luca, how do I-?”
“Seduce him?” I asked. Koi nodded. I smirked, indicating her clothes.
“This will do it,” I stated.
“Will you help me?” She asked startling me. I met her gaze.
“Help, how?” I drawled dryly. She suddenly became nervous.
“Bring Mex in.” She whispered. I nodded once.
“Are you ready?” I asked.
“Yes.” She whispered. I slipped out the door and came face to face with the huge Main Coon, standing with my mate.
“Is Koi, alright?” He asked. I winced, meeting my mate's gaze.
“So, Mex. This is going to be as awkward for me as it will no doubt be for you. Koi is in her room. She wants to attempt a mating and wants me to walk you into her.” I said rubbing the back of my neck with one claw, clearly uncomfortable. Nix and Mex chuckled.
“What?” I groaned.
“Kitten, this is trad-.”
“Tradition f*****g sucks,” I muttered wringing soft laughs from the two males towering over me.
“Thank you, my queen. It would be an honour to have you escort me to my mating.” Mex bowed low at the waist. I pinched the fur of his cheek between two of my claws, stopping him from regaining his height.
“She is terrified and has a direct line to my protective instinct Mex. The day Koi was attacked was the first time I shifted. Do keep that in mind, I cannot control myself when it comes to that female.” I growled releasing his face. Mex drew himself up to his full height.
“I understand. I am glad she has you, Luca.” Mex murmured. Nix clapped him on the shoulder comfortingly. I turned back to the door, squared my shoulders, and knocked lightly on the panel.
“Come.” A small voice called. I pushed open the door and stepped out of the way for the huge male to enter with me. Koi was standing on the opposite side of the room. Her claws were visibly shaking.
“You do not have to do this now, my love. I can wait for you.” Mex’s deep voice was gentle, sweet as he spoke to his mate. Koi shook her head vehemently.
“I want to commit to my mating. I refuse to allow Selig to ruin my relationship with my mate.” Koi growled.
“How can I help you, Koi?” He asked, holding his claws out in supplication.
“The thought of you reaching for me or holding me down-. Oh, oh, Luca had an idea! The other day. We females were in the kitchen talking. Luca, do you remember?” She turned an imploring gaze in my direction. Oh man, s**t just got even more awkward. I thought.
“Yeah, but Koi, Mex was a prisoner and the thought of being tied down might create the same response in him as it would if you were pinned,” I stated seriously. Mex looked between us. He chuckled.
“You told her to tie me to the bed?”
“Well, yeah. Why not? Do you have a problem with the idea?” I crossed my arms over my chest. Mex shook his head.
“No, not at all. I only ask that I not be restrained in such a way as I cannot escape.” Mex murmured loud enough for his mate to hear. She moved forward slightly.
“You’ll do it?” She breathed, hope filling her soft tone.
“Of course. My shockingly beautiful mate wants to tie me to the bed, so she might complete our mating. I not only agree, but I also encourage you to do it.” He teased. Koi released a surprised laugh. I smirked.
“I’ll ah, leave-.”
“No, Luca-.” Koi began. I sighed meeting her gaze. I indicated the male beside me.
“Yes. As your queen, I am ordering you to tie your mate to your bed.” I stated as firmly as possible while trying not to laugh. Koi bowed her head.
“Of course.”
“Goodnight.” I murmured backing out the door. I closed it behind me and leaned against the wall. Nix, Reggie, and Rosa were standing in the hall staring at me.
“Did you just-?” Nix asked. I covered my face with one claw, nodding my head as I moved to pass them.
“Yes, I did. No, I never want to speak of this again. Yes, I am going back to bed. This night got weird and I want to pretend it didn’t happen for a few hours.” I informed them. Nix murmured goodnight to my Aunt and Reggie. He followed me to our room. I slid into bed, my mate joining me.
“What’s bothering you, kitten?” He asked, pulling me into his arms. A choking sound ripped from my throat. Nix moved with unbelievable speed. He had me sitting up in his arms, one claw lifting my face. I was laughing softly into his chest. My entire body shaking.
“Damn it, kitten. You scared the hell out of me.” Nix growled, hugging me tightly.
“As queen, I ordered Koi to tie Mex to the bed.” I managed to get out between peels of laughter. Nix chuckled.
“Royal proclamation number eight.” He teased causing me to laugh harder. My mate moved us back to the head of the bed. We lay down again.
“Kitten, as king, I command you to tie me to the bed whenever you feel the need.” He teased. I grinned up at him.
“I love you too, Nix.” I breathed pressing my lips to his.
