The Blood Moon Ritual

719 Words
The crown of black diamonds seared Elara’s temples, its weight pulling her deeper into Kael’s embrace. His blood—thick, metallic, and strangely sweet—coated her lips as the thorns retracted from his chest, leaving jagged wounds that smoked like dying embers. “What… is this?” she gasped, her voice echoing unnaturally in the suddenly silent chamber. Kael’s breathing was ragged, his claws still tangled in her hair. “The crown chooses its queen,” he rasped. “It’s been waiting for you.” The walls of the palace began to bleed. Black ichor oozed from cracks in the obsidian, pooling into symbols that pulsed with malevolent light. Elara’s mind flooded with visions: - Her mother, a demoness with onyx horns and wings of molten gold, laughing as she danced with Kael in a storm of ashes. - Oberon’s soldiers tearing her from Kael’s arms, their silver blades sawing through her wings as she screamed Elara’s name. - A crib in this very room, its sheets stained with blood and starlight. “You were born here,” Kael growled, pressing his forehead to hers. “Under the Blood Moon. Your first cry shattered every window in the Ash Realm.” --- Kael led her to a hidden temple beneath the palace, its vaulted ceilings strung with chains of human bone. The air reeked of burnt incense and s*x. At the center stood an altar carved from a single black diamond, its surface etched with depraved scenes of demons and their consorts. “The ritual requires three things,” Kael said, stripping off his tunic. His scars glowed faintly, mapping constellations of pain. “My blood. Your submission. And this.” He gestured to the altar. Elara’s shadow-gown dissolved at his touch, leaving her bare. “I won’t be your sacrifice.” He gripped her throat, not hard enough to hurt, but enough to make her pulse race. “You already are.” --- Kael sliced his palm, letting his blood drip onto the altar. It hissed and writhed, forming a serpent that coiled around Elara’s wrist. “Repeat the words,” he commanded. “Vashta kyr’ath,” he growled. “Vashta kyr’ath,” she whispered. The serpent sank its fangs into her wrist. Fire flooded her veins, and the room spun. She collapsed against Kael, her back pressed to his chest as the Blood Moon’s crimson light pierced the stained-glass windows. “The ritual binds our souls,” he murmured, his hands sliding up her thighs. “If you resist, it will kill us both.” Elara’s wings burst into black flames. “Then let it kill you.” --- Kael laughed—a dark, broken sound—and pinned her to the altar. “You think I fear death?” His tail coiled around her waist, the spiked tip tracing the curve of her hip. “I’ve longed for it since she died.” His mouth found hers, this kiss softer, almost desperate. Elara’s thorns erupted again, but Kael didn’t pull away. He let them pierce his shoulders, his blood mingling with hers as the altar drank their pain. “Look at me,” he demanded, gripping her chin. Their eyes locked. Her vision fractured. - Kael, centuries younger, weeping as he cradled her mother’s lifeless body. - Oberon, sneering as he injected Elara’s infant veins with fairy light to smother her demonic magic. - Lysara, whispering to a hooded figure: "The Blood Moon will resurrect her. Kill the girl before she ascends.” “You see?” Kael’s voice was raw. “We’re both pawns.” Elara’s resolve crumbled. She arched against him, her claws raking his back. “Then let’s burn the board.” --- The ritual reached its crescendo. The Blood Moon’s light fused their bodies—Kael’s scars glowing gold, Elara’s wings dissolving into smoke. She felt his soul intertwine with hers, a collision of fire and shadow. “Now,” Kael rasped, his fangs at her throat. “Take what’s yours.” Elara plunged her claws into his chest. Instead of a heart, she pulled out a key—a shard of black diamond dripping with his blood. The palace shook. The altar split open, revealing a staircase spiraling into darkness. Kael collapsed, his breathing shallow. “Finish it… Queen.”
