Chapter 8: Truth about her birth

They sit around the table while Mr Cartwright stands in front of the screen, which shows the information of their next target. Kieran comes to sit beside Seraphina. "Long time no see, Sera." Seraphina rolls her eyes and chuckles. "We talked over the phone two days ago." "Yes, but it wasn't even up to two minutes before you said you needed to get busy and shoved me off like a piece of trash." "I… Alright, alright. I'm sorry." She cooed. "Apologizing can't bribe me into forgiving you. I need you to—" "Need me to do what, Kieran." She laughed in that beautiful way that lightens Kieran's day. "Dinner? Nine o'clock?" Seraphina squints her eyes. "Hmmm..” She needed a little time off and some moments with Kieran won't hurt. “No problem, but it all depends on the mission given, okay?" Kieran smiles. They shook hands as if a deal had been made. Seraphina giggles again, shaking her head as she turns to pay attention to what Mr. Cartwright has to say. Kieran stares at her for a long time, still smiling and feeling satisfied. Then Mr. Cartwright starts, "He is Lucien Hades, our next target. But mind you, unlike our past targets, he is a bit tricky and very cunning. He is not an ordinary person. He is one of the supernatural kind. A lycanthrope." They all look at each other while Seraphina curls her fist. The word Lycanthrope is not foreign to them. They have special training and all kinds of information about their weaknesses, strengths, everything to bring them down if they act reckless. Their biggest weakness is the fact that they are susceptible to silver and wolfsbane. The Order has levels each member has to reach before they are given difficult targets like Lycanthropes, werewolf, demons. The lower level only gets human targets. Any member who proves to be stronger, very skilled and succeeds in every work he is assigned to moves to become a member of the the level after his previous level. Seraphina is already in the uppermost level. There is no supernatural she can not deal with. But they never harm the innocent, only if their targets have done horrible things in their lives which they have to be stopped and killed. Seraphina wondered what horrible things Lucien must have done. Mr. Cartwright continues speaking. He points at the picture on the screen. Seraphina's eyes travel up to see a handsome man with red hair and glassy blue eyes. The look in his eyes is somewhat playful and innocent— not evil. Who knows what kind of devil is hidden under this innocent façade? The saying ‘Never judge a book by its cover’ rings in Seraphina's head but something rings louder. As she keeps looking at the man's face , it's as if something is clawing in her head. That same feeling she felt this morning. That incompleteness. It gave her a headache. She massages her head, trying to stay focused. Kieran notices her distress, "what's wrong?" "It's nothing." "Are you sure? Should I get you a glass of water?" "No, please. Don't bother. I'm fine." Seraphina says, smiling lightly at him. He nods, still looking at her with that worried expression. "He is Lucien as you all know. Lucien is well-known to take advantage of little girls from the age of 16 and above. The person who gave us all this information about him is one of his victims. " Seraphina curls her fist. One thing she hates so much is demons and another thing she hates is powerful men who feel they can harass the lowly. "How long has he been doing this? And who is the girl that gave us this information? We must appreciate and commend her for her bravery." "Shadow siren, you've got to learn to let me land first. " Mr. Cartwright says, somehow displeased by her questions. "Sorry, sir. Please continue. " He turned to face the other members that were seated. "Her name is Florence. She is a werewolf from a pack called Silver Moon Pack. We all know werewolves live in packs, right?" "Yes, sir." They all answered in unison. "This Miss Florence is the daughter of the alpha of the Silver Moon pack. She gave us this target saying that she was harassed on the day when lycanthropes held a banquet for the alphas of all the packs . That night, she was walking in the garden when drunk Lucien took her in and deflowered her. " Kieran noticed Seraphina's nails digging into her skin. Blood already stained her palm. He didn't need anyone to tell him how her blood was boiling right now. He knew when she was like this it was best to leave her alone. "Lucien threatened her not to tell anyone but Florence's brother managed to find out. Eventually, Lucien knew about it and killed her brother right in front of her eyes. " The hall was filled with gasps, and unbelievable gazes and murmurs. "How evil can one's mind be. " Someone close to Seraphina hissed. " Who knows how many girls have suffered worse in his hands? Especially human girls." Another said. Kieran turned to see Seraphina tighten her fist more. Blood poured out and Kieran couldn't help but worry. Her eyes were still fixed intensely on the screen. "We need to stop this permanently by making him suffer." Her voice was loud above the whispers. Everyone stopped talking and turned to look at her. "It's an easy job. We just need to finish him off so he can never think of hurting the weak again. It's as simple as that. So, why did Amara tell me this mission is going to be hard and a bit tricky?" She asked in confusion. Her intense gaze on the screen did not waver. "Thanks for that question, Shadow Siren." Mr. Cartwright sighed. "You all know about the mysterious CEO of Darkslade Enterprise. He has never made any appearance in public. No one knows him or what he looks like. Information reaching us says that he is the Supreme Alpha of the Darkslade Pack. He has been their Alpha for centuries now. Not only is he the Supreme Alpha, he is also the King of lycanthropes and werewolves." Murmus filled the room once again. "They have a king? Wow." Seraphina turns her eyes away from the screen. Kieran breathes a little out of relief. He hates when she stares like that in anger. It makes him worry about her so much. "What's the connection between the both?" She asked. Mr. Cartwright continues when the voices have gone down. "He loves to torture people whether they are lone wolfs, humans, you name it. He owns a dangerous underground dungeon where they do all their operations and Lucien is his gamma. " Another round of gasps. Mr. Cartwright looks at Seraphina as he speaks, "Seraphina, Amara and Kieran, the three of you will be the main assassinate of this operation. You will have to get as much information as you can. The ones we have now aren't enough to pull them down. We will need evidences of their shady businesses. Everything about his company, pack, location of the underground dungeon, every single evidence. Bring them to me. Amara, you will be in your hot enchantress disguise as usual and try as much as possible to seduce Lucien even though we know you don't need to do much. As for you, Seraphina, you will be the new Personal Assistant or Secretary to Mr. Darkslade. Always observe him, be close to him and find out as much information as you can about him. As for you Kieran, you are responsible for watching the girls back in case things start going south. Seraphina and Amara, both of your resumes have been sent out. It's now entirely on you girls to get the job.” He breathes before continuing, "This is the easiest level of this operation. After this, things will surely get harder. I trust y'all can handle it. Good luck. " After some time, the meeting is over. "You can release your fist now and stop hurting yourself. " Kieran says, bringing Seraphina out of her daze. Slowly, she pulls out her numb fingers one after the other. "Thanks, Kieran. " She smiled but it didn't reach her eyes. They both stand to walk out of the room. "Don't forget you owe me dinner tonight." "I won't." Seraphina nods her head. They were already at the door when Mr. Cartwright stopped them. He looked at Kieran. "I will need to talk to her. Alone." Kieran nods. "See you tonight, Sera." He faces the old man and nods again before walking out. "Seraphina," he starts. “My wife and I have taken very good care of you since that tragic night your parents died. You are not my daughter but I've always considered you as my daughter. Your parents and I were very close. We were not only neighbors to each other.. We were very close friends. So I will tell you this..." Seraphina looks at him with rapt attention, knowing he wants to tell her something very important so she listens carefully. He continues, "Seraphina dear, I don't know much about this mission, all I know is that it's going to be the toughest one yet. I will need you to promise me that you will take care of yourself. I know you are upset at the fact that cruel men like this exist but I have a feeling that you will get all the answers to your questions there. " Seraphina widened her eyes. "You mean.. I will find out about.. why.." Mr. Cartwright cuts her mid sentence. "Yes, you will. Mr. Dante doesn't know about this mission or the fact that you will be leading it, and I didn't want him to know for a purpose." She looked confused. "Why is that?" He didn't reply to her question. "Everything has its perfect timing, dear child. For now, it's time you know the truth of your birth and your purpose. After saying that he leaves Seraphina behind with more unanswered questions.
