Chapter 2
“I’m sorry about this, sir,” the valet said as he fidgeted under Geoffrey Hart’s gaze.
Geoffrey sighed. It was common knowledge that the VIP reserved parking spot at the mall belonged exclusively to the Dexington family, yet someone had parked a boxy white Jetta in the space.
This was one of the reasons why he hated moving around during the Christmas season. Something weird always managed to happen to him during this time. He’d stopped liking Christmas after he lost his parents in different years during this same season that everyone always gushed about. His longtime girlfriend in college had dumped him and then subsequently died in an accident during this holiday too. He’d pretty much shut his heart to love after that, poured his energy into work, and tried his best to minimize his activities during this season. But he’d had no choice but to run this errand.
He checked the time on his Patek Philippe watch—he was running late and didn’t have time to deal with this parking issue. He swept his eyes around the garage floor, but all the other spots were occupied.
“I’ll take care of it, sir,” the valet said with a solemn look on his face and extended his hand out to Geoffrey.
Geoffrey yielded the keys to his Range Rover SUV to him. He would have to trust the valet to handle it. He only had a little time to pick up the custom-ordered gift waiting for him at the boutique shop. It was an impromptu present ordered by his boss, Alex Dexington, for his wife, Helen, and had only just arrived a few hours ago.
Geoffrey, who worked as the family’s butler, had planned to pick up the item later in the day, but Alex had called in the morning to inform him that they would be arriving from Europe in the afternoon, a week earlier than originally planned, and he hoped to present the gift to his wife today.
The house had been thrown into a bustle of activity as the staff got the house ready for their return, yet there was still so much to be done. Thank goodness this would be a quick get-in-get-out scenario.
Geoffrey glanced at the white Jetta one more time and then hurried toward the elevators that led into the mall.
