Chapter 2: The Price

Sophia stood in front of the mirror longer than she needed to. She didn’t know why her hands were shaking. She didn’t know why her heart wouldn’t calm down. All she knew was that the message on her phone felt heavier than her school bag. Meet me after school. Behind the old lab. She read it again. And again. The words didn’t change, but the meaning did. Each time she looked at it, it felt less like an invitation and more like a pull. Sophia looked at her reflection. She looked tired. Smaller somehow. Like the mirror was already preparing her for loss. “Don’t be stupid,” she whispered to herself. She dropped the phone into her bag and turned away. Behind the old lab, the wind moved differently. Aira noticed it immediately. The rest of the school compound was loud and restless. Students rushed out of classrooms, laughing, pushing, calling each other. But the space behind the old science lab felt… quiet. Too quiet. She slowed her steps. Her gift buzzed under her skin like a warning. This is the place. She hugged her bag tighter and scanned the area. The building looked abandoned. Cracked walls. Broken windows. Old warning signs still nailed to the doors like the school had forgotten it existed. Her phone vibrated. Unknown number. She froze. Slowly, she unlocked her phone. Unknown: You see more than others, don’t you? Her breath caught. Aira: Who is this? The reply came instantly. Unknown: Someone who has been watching for a long time. Her fingers went cold. She typed back. Aira: Watching who? Three dots appeared. Then disappeared. Then— Unknown: Sophia. Her chest tightened. Ella felt it before she saw it. The music room lights flickered once. Twice. She stopped playing. “Johnson?” she whispered. He appeared slowly this time, like it took effort. His face looked different. Older. Tired. “They’re awake,” he said quietly. Ella stood up. “Who?” Johnson looked toward the direction of the old lab. “The ones that answer prayers they shouldn’t.” Ella’s stomach dropped. “You said they couldn’t cross into schools,” she said. “They can’t,” Johnson replied. “Unless someone invites them.” Ella grabbed her bag. “Then someone already did.” Sophia walked slower than usual. Every step toward the old lab felt heavier than the last. Her heart beat so loud she was sure someone could hear it. She told herself she would turn back. She didn’t. Her phone vibrated again. Unknown: You’re close. Sophia stopped walking. Her throat went dry. Sophia: I’m here. Where are you? The message took a few seconds this time. Then— Unknown: Right where broken things go. Sophia looked up. The door to the old lab creaked open slowly. Aira broke into a run. Her vision flashed without warning. Sophia’s hand reaching forward. A shadow smiling. Blood—not spilled. Offered. “No,” Aira whispered. She pushed harder, ignoring the burn in her chest. She was too late before she even arrived. The inside of the old lab smelled like dust and rust. Sophia stepped inside carefully. The door closed behind her. She spun around. Locked. Her breathing quickened. “Hello?” she called. The lights flickered. Then a voice answered. Soft. Calm. Familiar. “You came.” Sophia froze. The voice didn’t come from one place. It came from everywhere. “You said you could help me,” she said, forcing her voice to stay steady. A low chuckle filled the room. “I can,” the voice replied. “I already am.” The shadows on the walls shifted. Sophia’s chest tightened. “Who are you?” she asked. The lights flickered again. Then a shape stepped forward. Not fully human. Not fully dark. “I am a listener,” it said. “I hear what hearts say when mouths are silent.” Sophia swallowed hard. “You know who I love,” she whispered. The thing smiled. “I know who ignores you. I know who laughs without seeing you. I know how deeply you want to be chosen.” Tears filled Sophia’s eyes. “Can you make him love me?” she asked. The thing tilted its head. “I can make him see you,” it said. “Love is a different word.” Sophia hesitated. “What do you want?” The thing stepped closer. “A trade.” Aira reached the door just as the lock clicked shut from the inside. She banged on it. “Sophia!” she shouted. “Open the door!” No response. Her phone buzzed violently in her hand. A new vision hit her. Sophia standing at a line she can’t cross back from. A mark on her skin. A choice sealed in silence. Aira staggered back. “This is it,” she whispered. Inside the lab, the thing raised its hand. “Nothing is free,” it said calmly. “You want to be seen. You want to be loved. That requires space.” “Space?” Sophia asked. “Someone must move aside,” the thing replied. “Someone close to you.” Sophia’s heart skipped. “Who?” The thing leaned closer. “You will know when the time comes.” Sophia shook her head. “No,” she said. “I won’t hurt anyone.” The thing smiled wider. “You already are,” it said gently. “You just don’t see it yet.” Sophia’s phone vibrated. A new message appeared—no sender. ACCEPT OR WALK AWAY Her hands trembled. “What happens if I walk away?” she whispered. The lights dimmed. “Nothing changes,” the thing said. “You remain invisible.” Sophia closed her eyes. Outside, Aira screamed. “Sophia! Don’t do this!” Sophia opened her eyes. The screen glowed brighter. 10… 9… 8… Her heart pounded. She thought of every time she felt small. Every laugh behind her back. Every moment of being unseen. 5… 4… Her thumb hovered over the screen. Aira’s voice cracked outside the door. “Please!” 2… Sophia inhaled sharply. And pressed— The lights went out.
