Chapter 1

“Seannah! They are fighting again!” My bar maid yells and I sigh and walk out front while wiping my hands on my skirt. “AYE! No fighting in my bar or do you need a reminder?” I say to the two men fighting in my tavern. They look at me then back at each other like they are going to start again. “You're more than welcome to take it outside but I won't have it in here.” I say calmly walking up to them. One of them throws another punch and I've had enough. I lower the temperature in the room to an uncomfortable temp and spread ice across the floor. The men lunge for each other but slip and fall and I take my opening. “I'm pretty sure I said no fighting in here!” I yell and everyone's eyes are on me. All of my regulars know what's about to happen. It isn't easy being a woman owning a tavern in the middle of nowhere. One of the men spit at me. “I aint taking no orders from a woman.” He spits out and my temper sky rockets. I place my hand on his arm and watch as my ice spreads along his arm and up to his chest. “W-w-what are y-y-you d-d-doing to me?” I lean down really close to him. “Gettin a bit cold in here aint it? I've earned my way here, I've fought tooth and nail to get where I am. I haven't ever bowed down to any man ever and you won't be the first.” My ice starts to spread up his neck and I let go. I turn to the other man and his eyes are bugging out of his head. I rub my hands along my skirt in an unconscious gesture. “Now will there be any other issues?” I ask sweetly and they both shake their heads. “Good.” I say and return to behind the counter. I make sure my regulars are all full on ale and wine. “Good afternoon beautiful.” A deep voice greets me. I force a smile on my face for my biggest tipper and wave off my bar maid so she can go and make some money working the tables. “Good afternoon Darren, hows your day been?” I grab a cloth and start to wash off the bar. I grab a glass of ale and sit it in front of him. “Better now that ive seen your beautiful face.” I flash a smile at him because he is a sweet talker. “Well im glad I could help you out, anything up on the mountains today?” I ask as I lean against the bar to talk to him. “Not to much on the mountain but on the other side there is a huge army headin this way, not to sure why but maybe you will get some business from it eh?” I shake my head. “They never come through here you know that. Now dont go gettin my hopes up for nothin.” “Well maybe it will be your lucky da-” Darren gets cut off by a man slamming his up on the bar once its empty. I whip my head around towards him and shoot him a glance. He sheepishly looks away and mutters and apology and I refill his glass.     The evening flies by and before I know it I'm closing up and getting ready to head home. I wave goodbye to my employees and walk out back to the stall I built for my horse Herk. “Hey my big boy.” I say and pat his butt before I walk into the stall, he neighs a greeting to me and I start saddling him up. I bought Herk as a baby after his mom rejected him so I bottled fed this fat ass and now he is my bestfriend. Once Herk is saddled up I hike up my skirt and lift myself up into the saddle. Its a little difficult not to ride side saddle in a dress but I make it work because side saddle is just so uncomfortable. We exit to stall and start heading home to my little cottage, once Herk realizes it isnt grazing time. I live in the middle of a valley and its extremely beautiful, the village is very small but you can see rolling grass plains for days and I love it. Ironic for someone who controls ice isnt it? We make it home quickly and one I put Herk up for the night I head inside to start a fire. It may be warm during the days but the nights can get quite chilly.      Once I get the fire going I light a lantern and go to change into my nightgown. Once in bed I start thinking about Darren's words. An army huh? Could mean big money for me, for the town. We havent had a army come through here since I bought the bar when I was 20 and that was 4 years ago. Im still living off the gold I made those few days they was here. I shake my head and blow out my lantern and try and get some sleep.
