Derek's POV
Today is Saturday, from 8 pm to 12 pm is a private poker game at my other luxurious apartment.
There are three poker tables in the living room, with matching chairs and high-quality poker chips.
This game occurs twice a week, on Saturdays and Sundays, organized by me. The players are all well-known individuals, including doctors, lawyers, judges, government officials, and more. It started with just a few of my friends who enjoyed playing poker on weekends at my apartment, but as more people joined, it became invite-only. Only guests invited by existing players are allowed to participate in the game.
Playing poker here serves not only as entertainment but also as a way to network and conduct various business deals. Some deals are out in the open, while others are more discreet. Therefore, the players in this game come from diverse backgrounds, each with their own motives and secrets.
I remain neutral in these dealings, only taking a cut from the pot. However, if someone disrupts the game, I will involve either the underworld or legitimate authorities to handle the situation. If someone encounters trouble and offers me a substantial incentive, I may assist, depending on the benefits offered.
At 8 pm, those who confirmed their attendance with me arrived on time.
There's Jack, a jewelry store owner,
Jacob, a lawyer,
John, a judge,
David, a local gang leader,
and more...
A total of ten individuals arrived, filling up one table perfectly.
"Let's draw cards for seats."
The player with the highest card sits in seat 1,
the second-highest in seat 2,
and so on, up to seat 10.
I established the seating arrangement through a random draw to ensure fairness and avoid any disputes or unpleasant incidents.
I have two male and two female professional card dealers on standby to provide service to the players. I select the dealer based on the identities of the players who signed up for the game that day. These four individuals are on call 24/7, receiving a monthly salary from me while keeping their tips. This arrangement prevents them from working elsewhere, as sometimes I may need them for impromptu games that require immediate attention due to unforeseen circumstances or issues.
Once everyone took their seats, I called for Lisa, my personal steward, to serve drinks according to each player's preference, including gin and tonic, B2, Irish coffee, and more.
As the players settled in and engaged in conversation, I announced, "Let the games begin. If you need anything, just ask Lisa to call me. I'll be in the next room, ready to assist."
This was my usual opening statement.
Following that, the designated dealer for the day, Elaine, began dealing the cards to determine the position of the dealer button. While Lisa supervised the game in the living room, I retreated to the adjacent room to contemplate some personal matters.
