Blaze POV:
Suddenly, Ray asks me If I need her to stay somewhere else. I don’t think I will want to take her somewhere away from my eyes. Instead, I just tell her to recover first, and then she can decide for herself. She nods, maybe one day she might accept me with a nod too. I am lost in my mind when Connor links me.
“Blaze, we need to talk. Please.”
“Ok, we are coming back.”
We made our way back to my cottage surrounded by a comfortable silence. Halfway to the cottage, I link Roy.
“OK, lay it on me, what’s on fire?”
“Ummm… you should ask Connor.”
“You are my best friend, please tell me. I don’t want to be blindsided, Roy. If this is bad, I need to know.”
“Ohk... ummm…. so, Connor killed his beta back in the Black Foot pack. He was attacking a girl, who is also Connors' mate. She is the same girl we were trying to rescue.”
“Oh s**t, is she ok? Why didn’t you tell me?”
“She just woke up this morning. Connor is with her. She is skittish.”
“Please make sure, Connor takes her to Ethan. Or you make an appointment for her and Ray for tomorrow. If both of them could get a checkup done together, it would be good. We are coming back. See you soon.” He wanted to say something, but I wanted to cherish these last few moments with Ray. I am not sure exactly what will happen after our chat.
With that, I focus on getting back. As I get closer to my cottage, I see shadows in the back. Everyone seems to be here. Roy and Blake are arguing about what to say and how to say something. We both walked towards the back. Oliver is helping Connor get the bonfire ready, and they have chairs set up in a circle. OK,, so we are having the talk first. This looks more like a round-table conference.
There is a girl who is looking at Ray when I see her face. My whole body pales, oh no it can’t be. It’s that girl from the pack prison and she is Connors's mate. We have been trying to get her out of the pack for a long time. She was tortured worse than Ray and that’s saying something. Our families are the literal worst. I got up and put my hand on Connors's back. He sighed but nodded. We know her name. It’s Día. Día is older than Ray, so she must have shifted, or something, because Connor knows she is his mate. I am lost in my head when Connor starts talking. He just rips off the banded, unloading the information on both girls. Connor tells Ray and Día that they are cousins sisters. They both hold each other and cry. They both look alike and from all the information we know about the pack it’s easy to understand that they are related.
“You did well, Connor.”
“I haven’t done enough for her. You don’t know how we saved her. I killed my beta and his father to save her. I don’t regret it. She is a little afraid of me. I can see that with how she keeps following my movements. I don’t blame her; I would be afraid of myself if I was her. I look like my father, and he has beaten her more times than she can count. I can see it in her eyes, the fear radiates from her when I come any closer. She will never trust me.” He breaks down crying while he relays that piece of information to me. I just hold him close, I can feel his pain.
“I told her to accept or reject me. It is her choice. I won’t hold anything against her. I can’t torture her like this, she deserves to be happy”, he says, breaking down again while hugging me. I am thankful the girls didn’t hear him. He is sobbing on my shoulders. I don’t think he will ever forgive his father if Día rejects him. However, there is nothing we can do if she does. I hate to think about what Ray would do if we were in a similar situation. I am terrified of that scenario.
My heart hurts for my friend and brother, but I understand what he must be feeling. He has loved Día for a very long time, he has taken so much abuse trying to help her. But he could never do enough for her.
“Connor, just give her time. Maybe she will surprise you.”
“I know that, but I can’t see fear in her eyes, it guts me. I feel sick every time she radiates a scent of fear when I come closer. It doesn’t make any sense. I have never hurt her. Why is she afraid of me?”
I squeezed his shoulder and turned towards Ray. She looks at me point-blank and asks me to tell her everything. I can’t deny her anything, but telling her everything will make me lose something very precious to me, “Her”. I will lose her. The pain and fear blinds me momentarily, but I take a deep breath and start talking. She deserves the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the honest, blunt, naked truth. Even if it makes her hate me for the rest of her life.
