THE FRIENDLY PACK 1

1007 Words
Ray POV: We walked out of the small garden and saw several small cottages like ours all around us. They all have different colored shutters from what I can notice. Every one of them has some character from its inhabitants, such as flowerpots, bird feeders, rocking chairs, and creeping wines. They have one thing in common; they all look warm, cozy, comfortable, and content. Blaze sees where I am staring at and proudly explains. His pride shines brighter in his deep chocolaty brown eyes. “We built a few of them initially when we established this place seven years ago. Then people kept coming and we expanded the pack lands. Some of the huts were built by our new inhabitants. You can tell them apart; they are a bit modern. They have more character than the old ones. The new residents like building stuff and the guys are good at it. I think they will figure out how to get running water soon. We have clean water, but pipelines for running water are something we haven’t worked out yet. We just fill water in the terracotta pots for our daily use.” He is so nervous showing me around. “It’s just perfectly splendid,” I said slowly. I gave him a small smile, and we walked further into the pack land. I don’t know what they call this place, but it looks like what a pack should be. I stopped short being terrified when I saw a huge bear coming towards me. I am ready to bolt when Blaze grabs me and holds his hand out for the bear. The bear runs away and shifts into a young kid, who has a scar running over his chest. He came back wearing a t-shirt and shorts which must have been tucked away in the closest tree. Shifters usually leave their clothes all around the pack, we tear our clothes when we shift, so hiding clothes around helps everyone. We are not shy about nudity, but roaming around naked doesn’t seem like a good idea. We are human, after all. “Ray, this is Don. He is a member of our Grizzly sleuth. They stay just on the other side of the meadow. Bears like their privacy and don’t like people intruding much into it, so we built them cottages next to the meadow. They are close to the pack, but still, they have their privacy. It helps them relax.” Blaze says matter-of-factly, as if he is explaining some type of cheese to me. “Hi, Miss Ray. Nice to meet you.” “Blaze, will you spar with me? I want to show you some new moves I have learned these past few weeks. Elias is sparing with me, he taught me a lot.” Don says nervously. He looks like someone who wants to connect with people. And he looks at Blaze with so much respect. Who exactly is Blaze to these people? “Sure, Ray will it be OK if we stopped by near the training grounds on the way back?” Blaze asked me as if I could say no. So, I just nodded, accepting his request. I don’t even know if it was a request. He is an Alpha, and he’s asking me permission. What’s with that? I cannot figure this guy out. Don perks up and runs away yelling at the others that Blaze is going to train with them. Blaze is a mystery; he is polite, caring, and well-respected. He is unlike any alpha I have ever seen. And he hates his father. Why? And this place, what exactly is this place? How did they achieve this? We walk further into the pack lands without exchanging any other words. I am lost looking at everything. Everything is so well-kept and beautiful. The grass is trimmed wherever necessary, but it still looks untamed, making it more inviting; all the cottages are well maintained. There is a small rustic-looking playground for kids. It looks more like an obstacle course, but a lot of kids are playing on it, so it must be fun. At least they are happy. They all looked happy. Being surrounded by so much happiness is unnerving. I am afraid to destroy this. A lot of people are working around the pack, and they all look busy but weirdly content. Despite being busy, they smile at us, some wave while working. They are giving me a weird look. Some start to approach us but walk away just before reaching us. They look so familiar; I just cannot place them. Where have I seen these people? We just kept walking, reaching a bigger cottage. It’s all white with red terracotta tiled roof. It looks so clean, almost sterile. There is another tall guy with a beautiful girl holding a baby. She looks so familiar. Then it clicked she was that girl, the girl Nicholas and his goons were beating that day, when I ran into them and lied that the Alpha was looking for him. She was so broken that day. I thought she had died after that as I never saw her again. I hated that I didn’t know what happened to her after that day, even if it didn’t end well for me that day; Nicholas beat me up so badly and I thought I would die, and I didn’t get any food for a week. When she notices me, she gives the baby to the guy next to her and runs to me. She hugs me tightly and starts crying. “Thank you, thank you, thank you.” She keeps repeating while hugging me. I locked eyes with the guy standing next to her. He looked familiar. It hits me instantly he is one of the good warriors from the pack, the one with sad eyes. He disappeared sometime later after the incident concerning this girl. He walks towards us with another guy who is smiling at me. Blaze just stands there looking so proud of me.
