UNEXPECTED REUNION 1

1206 Words
Blaze POV: I see Davis, among the five surviving wolves. They bow their heads in shame. I don’t understand what’s wrong with them. They stood up to their fears and fought for their lives and Ray’s honor. I can never repay their debt; I don’t know what I would have done if they hadn’t helped her today before we got here. I would have lost her, that thought cuts me deep. Thor growls deep inside me. “I am sorry Blaze, we tried helping her,” Davis speaks slowly with so much guilt, but he should be proud of his actions today. I try to reassure him even though the scent of Ray’s blood is making it hard for me to control my emotions. “You did what you can, don’t worry. You guys can come along with us. You are all injured and if Simon finds out you had anything to do with Nicholas’s death, he will kill all of you.” I try to say, but it comes out as a growl making all of them flinch, so I just nod at them letting them know it’s time to start walking. I am in no condition to talk with Ray’s beaten body in my arms. Thor is out for blood, he wants to kill Simon, but I need to make sure Ray is safe. With that, we started walking back to the Jeep. Within an hour, we reached the jeep as we couldn’t run with an unconscious Ray. Ritz and Oliver rush towards us. Oliver tries to take Ray from me, but Thor growls with such ferocity that it makes him halt and back away slowly, raising his hands in surrender. “I am sorry, he is just distraught seeing Ray like this,” I tell him slowly, my voice breaks at the end. I climbed into the back with Ray in my arms. Ritz and Nina check Ray out and dress her wounds temporarily so we can move without worrying about her. Everyone climbs into the Jeep without another word. With so many of us inside. It looks like we are taking cattle to the slaughterhouse, but nobody says anything. Blake starts driving. Within a few hours, we were finally out of the Red Claw pack grounds for good. I made a silent promise to Ray that she would never cry again, she would never endure such pain and torment again. I would die before someone ever lays a finger on her ever again. I will paint this world red if I ever have to see her like this ever again in my life. I will protect and cherish her till my last breath. I will help her get everything back, whatever she has lost here in the last decade or more. I gently kiss her forehead, and she makes the faintest purring noise. I hold her closer to me, making sure she won’t disappear again. We drove through the tracking trail toward the old-growth wilderness of the unexplored Sawtooth Mountains. After hours of driving, we reached deeper into the woods near the river. It is still early hours of the night and the moon is just above the horizon. We decided to hide the Jeep near the river, it’s our usual hiding spot. Someone will collect it later when they want to go back to the civilization. We cover it up with dead leaves while Ritz grows branches around it, so no one other than us realizes where we left it. The treacherous river needs crossing. However, the old torn-down bridge is hardly inviting. The wooden bridge is made of wooden planks with ropes holding it together. The bridge swings side by side as we step on it. Only one can cross it at a time as it’s too fragile and weak. I held Ray tighter and stood aside, letting others cross first. I admire the beauty of nature surrounding us. Ray would have loved it if she had been awake. The place looks like an enchanted trail, tall trees that have seen thousands of people live and die. The serene beauty of vibrant green surrounds us. The crystal-clear blue water of the river is under us. I won’t admit it out loud, but it looks scary. I am holding Ray tighter in my arms. I pray that the bridge takes our weight. I let everyone pass first, then tied a rope around Ray’s tiny hips and secured her, just in case something happened. She will be safe. I pass one end of the rope to Blake as he walks across. The rest of the group is waiting for me on the other side. We haven’t used this bridge in a long time as we usually travel through the portal. Which is an intense way to travel around. However, we can’t fix the bridge as it will make it easier for the troops to track us if they find our trail. I gingerly take one step at a time, making my way across. It took longer than necessary, but I could not risk Ray, so I slowly and steadily walked across the bridge. An owl is hooting from the nearby tree, making the atmosphere much scarier. Screeching from the trapped animal almost makes me jump out of my skin, it sounds like a rat or a small borrowing animal is being hunted by a predator. I shake my dark thoughts away and focus completely on crossing the bridge as safely as possible. Ray stirs in my arms, making the bridge wobble. My heart jumps with fear, making me feel as if my legs are frozen. She stops moving soon enough, relaxing in my arms after breathing in my scent. Even in this situation, I find it adorable that she seeks comfort in my scent. After what feels like an eternity, I reach the end of the bridge sighing in relief. We walked along the narrow path which is well hidden in the thick forest cover. A herd of deer must have taken this path earlier in the evening, their droppings and scent are still fresh in the air. That gives me some relief as it proves that no hunter or beast is present nearby. We slowly made our way through the thick vegetation. Snakes are slithering in the distance, but we pay them no attention and walk on our way; there must be a snake nest around here somewhere if so many of them are lying around. It looks scary, but it is an unwritten rule that if you don't disturb them they won't attack you. Snakes only attack when provoked. And with so much living energy around, I doubt they are hungry. They can be aggressive when they are hungry. Birds are chirping loudly, sensing the predators amidst them. Borrowing animals makes themselves scarce as we walk ahead. It’s the law of nature. If you don’t disturb an animal, they won’t disturb you. We reached the bottom of the rocky peaks after hours of endless walking through the forest. We decided to rest here for the night after scouting our surroundings. Safe to say we are not being followed as there is no unknown scent or presence behind, or around us.
