Blaze POV:
“Ritz, can you please make me a grass bed for Ray? I want her to be comfortable.” I slowly asked Ritz without putting Ray down. She nodded, and her hands glowed green. She coaxes the nearby grass to grow thicker like a mattress. It is quite beautiful to see her magic take effect; it feels as if she is talking to the plants, convincing them to do what she wants.
“Thank you, Ritz.”
“Blake, could you please do a sweep of the area with Roy again? We don’t want to be caught unaware in case of an ambush.” They nodded confirming they heard me and went behind the bush to shift.
Ritz is tracking Blake’s every move like a predator ready to pounce on its prey. It’s funny seeing her like this. She blushes when he removes his shirt before entering the bush. There is something between them, a weird s****l chemistry; whatever it is, we will find out soon enough.
“Nina, can you please help Ritz check on Ray? In case she has any infected wounds. I have some clothes for her in my bag. I will go get them.” Both of them quickly get to work, sitting next to the Sleeping Beauty with their medical bag. They start cleaning her wound and change the dressing. My heart hurts looking at her when I see her blood-soaked back. Oliver is just observing me along with Davis and the other wolves who came along with us.
“Oliver, let’s get the food ready for everyone. I will cook if someone gets me some rabbit meat.” I told him so he could stop looking at me with that weird expression.
It has the desired effect as everyone yells no. Oliver started talking with his usual animated hand gestures.
“No, not you, anyone but you. You will put something weird in the food again. I am not eating a stew with rabbit intestines.”
“But we shouldn’t waste the meat. We need to use everything.” I try my best to defend my past actions. But his face says it all, he is not convinced in the slightest with my reasoning.
“No just no. Davis, can you please help me? Blaze, you go get the damn rabbit.” He counters.
“I am not leaving Ray alone.” I spit back without a second thought, which made them all look at me with a puzzled look.
“Does she look alone to you? We will protect our princess with our lives. I cross my heart and pinky swear to you.” He literally brings his pinky out and smirks at me. I don’t think I had any argument for that, so I put my head down and walked away towards the nearby tree. Removing my clothes, I feel the familiar feeling of bones rearranging and fur sprouting. Instantly, Thor stands tall on his four legs. Thor perks up, enjoying the fresh scent of grass and untouched forest. He seems much calmer now that Ray is resting safely.
“She will be fine, Blaze. Don’t worry.” I don’t even know whether he is assuring me or himself with that statement.
“What if she hates me? She doesn’t know who my parents are yet. What if she never forgives me for not being able to help her? What if she thinks I am a monster too.” I voice out my deepest feelings to him, even though he knows everything I feel for and about Ray.
“Ray is not naïve. She will understand why you did what you did. Now relax and let me hunt. You are making me anxious with your thoughts.” He grumbles, trying to catch his prey.
He runs around chasing squirrels and birds like a young pup. When he has burned all his pent-up energy, he gets serious and hides behind a bush on his hind legs. Listening to the sound of any small animals around him. As soon as he gets the scent, he is alert and ready. He is perked up ready to hunt. A rabbit is hiding in his burrow near us. He jumps up trying to escape us, but Thor leaps for it, grabbing it in between his massive jaws. Killing it instantly with mercy. I sent a small prayer to Artemis for the food we are getting and thanked the animal for feeding us.
I held the dead animal in my jaws, tracking back to the cliff. Seeing Ritz and Nina in the distance, I shift back and grab my clothes. Dressing quickly, I walked towards them. Taking the animal back to our shelter for the night. Oliver has collected some wild herbs and berries.
“Here, let me skin them for you. Are you using any internal organs, or should I bury them?” I asked Oliver, even though I knew what he might say.
“No Blaze, I am not putting anything weird in my food. You can use them for yourself but none of us are eating that.” He mutters under his breath, making others snicker at his antics. I quickly got my hunting knife and cleaned the animal by chopping it into smaller parts. I put them on the wooden bark he is using as a small table. Leaving him alone with his culinary experiment. I sat next to Ray holding her hand and praying she woke up soon.
Roy and Blake also came back soon after me, reporting that we didn’t have any tails, meaning we are not being followed. We all ate the rabbit stew Davis and Oliver made in utensils made up of the leaves from the nearby Mongolia tree. We gathered a huge pile of sticks to make a bonfire to last us through the night. It will at least give us some warmth. Holding Ray’s head in my lap, I covered her in my hoodie so she could be comfortable and warm for the night. Everyone is huddled up around the fire, lost in their own thoughts.
