A Family Meeting Vivienne stood motionless in her father’s office, pressing into the edge of the cold wooden desk. The room felt oppressive like the wall hanging. The papers before her were no longer just words on a page; they embodied the weight she now carried. The Ashford proposal, her family's future, was now in her hands, and it was a decision that would change everything. She had agreed. She had chosen to marry Magnus Ashford, the man her father had readily handed over to her like a lifeline. But that decision had been made in haste, driven by desperation. Now, Asfather paced the room, a tenon thickened the air, and Vivienne couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more to this than just a simple financial transaction. Her father stopped pacing and turned to face her, his face drawn, his eyes heavy with the years of stress that had begun to erode his once sharp features. He placed a hand on the back of his chair as if for support, his voice quieter now but no less urgent. “We’re running out of time, Vivienne. The Ashfords are waiting for your response. Magnus himself will be expecting you to meet him tomorrow.” Vivienne nodded mechanically, her lips pressing into a tight line. The words felt distant like they were spoken by someone else, someone who didn’t have to live with the consequences of what was about to chair's armrest raced, a whirlwind of doubt and uncertainty clouding her mind. But before she could speak, her younger brother, Adam, interrupted. His voice, as usual, carried a certain irreverence that no one else dared to show in these moments. “This is insane,” Adam said, slamming a hand on the chair's armrest beside him. “You’re asking her to marry a man she doesn’t even know, all because of some crumbling legacy?” Her father shot him a look, but Adam was already on a roll. “You don’t know the Ashfords, Vivienne,” Adam continued, standing now and pacing with frustration. “There’s something about them. Something... dangerous.” Vivienne turned to her brother, a furrow forming in her brow. “What are you talking about?” she asked, her voice soft, barely more than a whisper. “What do you know about them?” Adam hesitated, his gaze flickering to their father before he spoke, a slight tremor in his voice. “I don’t know much, but I know this: the Ashfords have always gotten what they want. And they’ll stop at nothing to get it.” Her father cleared his throat; any further discussion? “That’s enough, Adam,” he said sternly. “This is the only way. There is no other choice. Magnus Ashford is our salvation. Don’t make this harder than it already is. iconcernedvienne’s gaze shifted between her brother and father, and the tension was palpable. Adam’s warnings hung like an unsaid truth, but her father’s conviction cut through them. Her brother might be young, but he wasn’t naive. Vivienne knew he wasn’t just worried about her marrying Magnus he was concerned about what the Ashfords represented. Power. Control. A dangerous world she didn’t fully understand. “You’re asking her to sacrifice herself for the family, binded I've lost everything, Father,” Adam shot back, his voice rising in frustration. “You can’t just hand Vivienne over to the Ashfords like she’s some beyond.” Vivienne’s stomach churned as Adam’s words hit home. She could feel the weight of their implications. The truth was, she hadn’t indeed considered what this marriage would mean for her. The Ashfords weren’t just another wealthy family; they were a family that stretched across more than just business or society. They controlled everything, and now, Magnus Ashford’s name had become synonymous with their survival. Her father’s eyes hardened, and he took a step forward, his voice low but firm. “Vivienne,” he said, his ther softening slightly. “You understand. I am not asking you to sacrifice for nothing. This marriage will Ins. It will ensure your future and our legacy. I worked too long to see a, and it all did happen of some debts.” Her father’s words held weight, but Vivienne couldn’t shake her gnawing sense of betrayal. This wasn’t about saving the family. It was about preserving the others doing so; they forced her to give up her autonomy, future, and freedom. The Ashfords danandndidn’tst buy people; they owned them. They expected nothing less than complete loyalty. But there was no turning back now. She had already agreed. She had already sealed her fate by signing the letter. Adam’s voice softened as he looked at her, concern in his eyes. “Vivienne, you don’t have to do this. There has to be another way.” Vivienne’s mind raced, the uncertainty gnawing at her, but she knew deep down that ehopingasn’t another way. Her family was crumbling, and this was the only way to stop it. The reality of the situation settled over her like a shroud, cold and suffocating. There was no escape from the Ashfords. The name was too powerful, too all-encompassing. Her only option was to marry Mag, hoping there would be a chance for her to carve out some semblance of freedom somewhere further in the dark recesses of this deal. “I have to do this, Adam,” she said softly, meeting her brother’s gaze. “For the family. I don’t have a choice.” Adam’s expression darkened, but he didn’t argue with the other hand. He exhaled in relief as if the world's weight had been the world's weight holders. “Good,” he said, nodding. “Then we can move forward. Tomorrow, we’ll arrange the meeting with Magnus. You’ll have to ourselves for what comes next, Vivienne.” As the conversation came to a close, Vivienne’sendedwhirl. The decision had been made. There was no backing out now. The Ashfords had claimed her and, with them, her family's future. But as the room grew quiet again, Vivienne couldn’t shake the unease that clung to Dam’s words, which lingered in her mind. Dangerous. And as she glanced at the letter on the desk, the weight of the Ashford family’s power settled over her once more
