Knox has been a shadow all week.
He walks me to every class and picks me up after every shift and texts me so constantly that my phone battery dies by 3 PM, and the possessiveness that used to feel like a game has sharpened into something that feels like a perimeter check.
He stands closer. He holds tighter. He sleeps in my room every night now, curled around me with his arm across my ribs like a seatbelt, and the double heartbeat in my chest tells me his wolf hasn’t settled since Viktor’s name lit up his phone screen.
Tonight is different because the sky is breaking apart.
Thunder rolls across the city in waves that shake the windows, and lightning turns my bedroom white every few seconds, and the rain is hitting the glass so hard it sounds like someone throwing gravel, and Knox opens my door at midnight and he’s half-shifted.
I can see it immediately. His shoulders are broader under his t-shirt and his hands are wrong at the edges, fingertips darkening where the claws are pressing forward, and his eyes are fully gold.
The light from a lightning flash catches them and they GLOW in a way that makes my breath hitch and my thighs press together because my body has been conditioned to associate golden eyes with the most intense pleasure it’s ever experienced and the conditioning works even when the man attached to the eyes looks like he’s losing a fight with something inside his own chest.
“I need to mark you,” he says, and his voice is wrecked – deeper than human, vibrating with the shift that’s pressing through his vocal cords. “Properly. Not the shoulder bite that fades. The real permanent mark. Every wolf who sees it will know you’re mine and the ones who don’t see it will smell it from across a room.”
Lightning splits the sky outside my window and his face is lit white for a second and I can see the desperation in his expression, and underneath the desperation is something I haven’t seen from Knox before – he’s asking. Not commanding, not taking, not assuming I’ll comply because I always comply.
He’s asking because this is different from everything else he’s done to me, and he knows it.
“If I do this,” he says, and his clawed hands are shaking at his sides, “you’ll feel me. Not just the heartbeat – everything. My emotions, my wolf, all of it. The bond goes both ways and you won’t be able to turn it off.”
Thunder rolls through the apartment and the walls vibrate and I look at this man – this werewolf who broke into my room with a belt buckle and put me on my knees before I knew his last name – and I say yes because my body said yes before he finished asking and my heart said yes somewhere around the time he laughed into my neck in the laundry room and the rest of me is just catching up.
He crosses the room and picks me up and carries me to the bed and lays me down and the almost full shift unfolds over him while he’s on top of me, his body broadening against mine, his temperature spiking, his hands growing until his fingers span my entire waist. The thunderstorm outside matches the electricity pouring off his skin, and when lightning flashes his golden eyes burn bright enough that I can see them with my own eyes closed.
He undresses me slowly, which is so unlike shifted Knox that the tenderness makes my throat tight, and his too-big hands trace every mark he’s left on my body over the past weeks like he’s reading a map he drew himself.
He pushes inside me and the stretch is the same overwhelming fullness from the first shifted night, the supernatural width of him forcing my body open beyond its human specifications while the wolf pheromones flood through every point of contact and light up my nervous system like a grid being powered on.
I wrap my arms around his neck and pull him close and his mouth is against my throat and I can feel his fangs grazing the skin above my pulse, testing the spot, mapping the exact location where the mark will go.
He moves inside me in deep, rolling strokes that build the pleasure in layers – each thrust pressing against that deepest spot while the pheromone transfer amplifies the sensation beyond anything my body can process on its own – and the thunderstorm outside is so loud that my moans disappear into the noise and for the first time since this started I don’t have to be quiet and the freedom of it makes me louder than I’ve ever been.
“Are you sure?” He says it against my throat and his fangs are pressing lightly against my pulse point and I can feel the restraint in every muscle of his body, the wolf held back by a thread that’s waiting for my answer to snap.
“Yes.”
He bites.
His fangs sink into my neck and the pain is blinding and absolute for a single second that whites out every other sensation, and then the pain becomes something else. The wolf bond ignites through the bite like a fuse being lit, and suddenly I can feel HIM – his entire emotional landscape pouring into my consciousness through the wound in my neck.
I feel his fear of Viktor like ice in my own veins. I feel his hunger for me like a fire in my own chest. I feel the wolf – the actual wolf inside him, the entity that chose me across a restaurant table before he knew my name – and it’s vast and golden and ancient and it loves me with a devotion so absolute and so feral that there’s no human word for it because human love has conditions and this doesn’t.
I feel him c*m inside me through the bond – his pleasure mirroring in my body, the feedback loop amplifying everything until his orgasm triggers mine and mine amplifies his and we’re caught in a spiral of shared sensation that transcends the physical and enters something that feels like being fused at a molecular level.
“Mine,” I hear, except I don’t hear it with my ears – I feel it in my blood, in the wound on my neck, in the bond that’s solidifying between us like metal cooling into its permanent shape, and I don’t know if he said it aloud or if his wolf pushed the word directly into my nervous system.
The thunderstorm peaks outside. Lightning turns the room white. He pulls his teeth from my neck and the wound glows – faintly golden, pulsing in rhythm with both our heartbeats – and the warmth that spreads from it is different from the healing bite on my shoulder. This warmth doesn’t close the wound. It settles into it.
I touch it with my fingertips and the contact sends a pulse through the bond that I feel in Knox’s chest on the other side of my body, and he shudders against me and his arms tighten and the thunderstorm begins to quiet and we lie there in the dark with a permanent glowing mark on my neck and his emotions flowing through me like a river I didn’t know existed until someone opened the dam.
Across the hall, through the wall, through the bond that makes my senses sharper than they were an hour ago, I hear something that makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up even as I lie in Knox’s arms with his mark still warm on my throat.
A sound from Dominic’s study. Not a growl – something quieter. The sound of wood cracking. Probably his fingers tightening on the edge of his desk until the grain splits under his grip.
He felt it too.
