After the cops left, the teens continued with their cleaning. Terry threw himself into it, working diligently in hopes it would take his mind off what the officers had told him. To some degree it did, thanks to Rudy spending half his time pointing out places Terry had missed. Terry knew why he was doing that and played along, grumbling and growling while he scrubbed away at the grimy woodwork.
Finally they called a halt for the day, disposing of the rags that were too filthy to be salvageable, and at Josie’s insistence putting the rest to soak overnight. They decided to take the front way back to where they were staying on the theory that if it had been the detective and his people they’d seen, the men wouldn’t dare try anything on a neighborhood street with people around.
