CHAPTER 4 : Doubts

1228 Words
Kaelen was still standing in bewilderment. Where could she have disappeared to? He could remember holding her wrist. He was so close to knowing who this strange girl was “I doubt if she knows what the mark signifies,” he said within himself. Ethan tapped his shoulder from behind. Ethan was his childhood friend. He was the son of one of the elders. He was the same age as Kaelen. “Why are you stunned, as if you’ve seen a ghost?” “I can swear it wasn’t a ghost, but the sight was frightening.” “You have been standing here alone for several minutes.” “Alone? Didn’t you see a girl leave this corridor or vanish just now?” Ethan laughed continually. “Are you okay, Kaelen? If someone had passed me, I would have seen her.” The both men settled in silence. Kaelen looked at his hands. He could still feel her warmth on his hand, yet there was no proof she was there. Kaelen’s heart quickened. “Are you certain?” Ethan chuckled. “A girl with the Blood Moo…” he stuttered. “…was standing here with me.” Before he could finish, a loud sound erupted from the sky. Kaelen and Ethan looked at each other in shock. Their eyes widened in fear. The Crimson Hollow Pack, their rivals, had just sent a warning signal to the Enterium Dominion that they would be attacking any time from now. Meanwhile, Lyra laughed softly as Ivy led her through the girls’ residence. “You will love it here,” Ivy said cheerfully. “Well… eventually.” Lyra smiled faintly. Her thoughts drifted somewhere else. The pain in her wrist had returned again. She rubbed the spot consistently. “Does your wrist hurt?” Ivy asked curiously. Lyra immediately lowered her hand. “It’s nothing.” She forced a smile. “It happens sometimes.” Before Ivy could ask another question, the bell rang. All students were ordered to report to the Hall of Origins for the annual welcoming ceremony. Lyra followed Ivy through the crowd. The academy finally became lively. Students poured out of the corridors, all rushing excitedly. At the opposite end, Kaelen stepped into the same hall. His eyes wandered absentmindedly amongst the students. He froze. Standing among hundreds of unfamiliar students was the strange girl. Her sapphire-blue eyes beamed as her lips moved while talking to Ivy. She was wearing the same sleeve she had worn earlier. This time she didn’t disappear. She was real. Lyra looked up at that exact moment. Their eyes met. A strange chill ran through both of them. Neither of them understood the strange feeling. Kaelen’s wolf was trying to meet her at all costs. Before either of them could move, the crowd of students covered Lyra. He tried reaching out to her. “Wait!” Before he could reach the entrance, Lyra was gone again. He had seen her twice but had never gotten the chance to confirm the mark. After the Hall of Origins ceremony, Kaelen couldn’t stop thinking about Lyra and the mark on her wrist. Kaelen followed Lyra secretly from a distance because he wanted to know if it was really the Blood Moon mark he had seen. Lyra stopped in a quiet courtyard, feeling the burning in her wrist again. She wondered why it had become so intense since she came to Coven Spire Academy. She pondered within herself. Is it because I left home and changed environment? Is it an injury that is getting worse? She couldn’t arrive at any answer. She lowered her sleeve and walked away. Kaelen arrived a few seconds later. He picked up a silver bracelet from the ground. Lyra had accidentally dropped her bracelet. He picked it up, staring at it in bewilderment. He gave a smug smile. “With this, I think I can get to know this strange girl.” Then he heard a voice behind him, almost like a whisper. “Looking for answers will always lead you to the same fate as your father.” Kaelen spun around. But there was no one. Just the wind whistling silently. He looked at the bracelet again. Carved into it was an ancient symbol his father had once interpreted to him as the Collision of Fate. Lyra laughed nonstop as Ivy told her about werewolves. The outburst of her laughter woke up a girl sleeping on the bed next to Ivy. “What, Ivy? I guess you must be tipsy from the little wine you took at the Hall of Origins party. What do you mean by humans turning into wolves, or wolves turning into humans? I have never heard of such a myth. Werewolves don’t exist in real life. I have only seen them in movies.” The other girl sitting on the bed next to Ivy frowned uncontrollably. “Please, can you keep it low?” she said, almost like a scream. Ivy tried covering Lyra’s mouth with her hands. Lyra mockingly pulled it away. “I’m sorry, Amelia. You were sleeping when we came in. I decided not to wake you up.” Ivy continued, “This is Lyra Silas, a newly transferred student and our new roommate.” Amelia sighed uncontrollably. “Another human.” Lyra froze. “What does she mean by another human?” “She is an Omega,” Ivy said. Lyra stared at Ivy, seeing the confusion in her own eyes. “Omega??? What do you mean by that?” “When it is time, you will understand,” Ivy smiled warmly. Still in shock, Lyra looked at Amelia for some moments. Amelia raised her eyebrows, gesturing by lifting both shoulders. “Why are you staring at me with such shocked and frightened eyes? Haven’t you heard of werewolves?” Lyra didn’t respond. She only sneered. Deep inside, she thought they were all trying to pull her legs. A cool breeze swept across Coven Spire Academy. Unable to sleep, Lyra quietly stepped out of the girls’ residence and leaned against the stone balcony. She lifted her eyes to the full moon hanging peacefully above the academy. A small smile crossed her lips. “I hope Mum and Dad are doing okay.” Her thoughts drifted home. She couldn’t wait for the weekend so she could go home. Then… She heard something move. Out of the corner of her eye, a white figure emerged from the darkness. Lyra slowly turned to see what it was. Standing a few feet away from her was an enormous white wolf. Its snow-white fur shimmered gorgeously beneath the moonlight. Its glowing silver eyes were fixed on her. The creature didn’t blink. It simply stared. Lyra’s heart pounded violently. “No…” She took an unsteady step backward. “This can’t be real.” The stories Ivy had told her earlier echoed in her mind. Or was her mind playing tricks on her? Werewolves? She had laughed. She had called them myths. But now… One stood before her. She couldn’t fathom whether it was just a wolf or a human. The massive white wolf suddenly lowered its body. Its sharp claws dug into the ground. Its lips curled back, revealing razor-sharp fangs. Before Lyra could scream… The wolf launched itself straight at her. Its claws reached toward her chest…
