CHAPTER 5 : Truth and Denial

A soft white light surrounded the creature. Something strange happened. Instead of attacking Lyra, the wolf landed in front of her. Its silver eyes locked onto hers, not with hunger but almost like recognition. Lyra didn’t move because she was so shocked and scared to move. She was confused. She didn’t know what to do. The wolf slowly walked around her, smelling her, studying her. Then it let out a loud howl that echoed across the academy. Every light inside Corven Spire Empire suddenly came on. The wolf looked towards the forest as if it sensed something dangerous. Then it disappeared—not transformed, not revealed—it simply vanished into the darkness. Lyra stood there, shaking. “It spared me,” Lyra whispered. Lyra ran back into the girls’ residence, scared of what she had just seen. Before she reached it, a loud horn sounded across the entire academy. Not once. Not twice. Three times. The teachers’ expressions changed immediately. She could see fear in some of the students she ran past. She didn’t know what it meant. Most students began running. A professor’s voice echoed, “Every first-year student, inside!” Nobody explained why. Lyra stormed into her room, panting. Her breath caught. “What is happening, Ivy?” she asked, her eyes filled with fear. Ivy ignored the question. She grabbed her hand. “Don’t let go of my hand.” As they ran past the professors, Lyra noticed something. Several professors suddenly disappeared—not by running, but almost as if they had moved too fast for humans. She whispered, “Humans cannot move like that.” Kaelen reached the academy gate. He saw claw marks carved into the stone walls. His expression changed. Ethan arrived beside him. “What is it?” Kaelen knelt, touched the claw marks, then said quietly, “They’re here.” Ethan’s face turned pale. “The Crimson Hollow Pack?” Kaelen nodded. “But they are not here to attack the academy.” Ethan frowned. “Then why did they come?” Kaelen slowly stood up. He looked towards the girls’ residence. “I think they are here for someone.” “They are hunting someone?” Ethan asked curiously. “Who might they be hunting for?” Kaelen raised his eyebrows. “We have to map all spaces to the girls’ residence.” Ethan stared at him in confusion. “Why the girls’ residence?” “I don’t know, Ethan, but my instincts tell me that.” Lyra and Ivy ran across the corridors of the school. Ivy could hear wolves growling from afar, but Lyra didn’t know why her roommate was so scared, and why most of the students were as well. As they passed through the library, Lyra couldn’t bear the silence from her friend any longer. She needed answers. She let go of her friend’s hand. “Ivy, what the f**k is happening? Just now, I saw a white wolf. He smelled me and disappeared into the darkness. Now we are running aimlessly in the academy. I need answers, Ivy!” she screamed uncontrollably. It seemed she was going insane. The whole thing was scary, and she had never had such a life back in her parents’ cottage. She prayed vehemently in her heart that she really wanted to go home. She finally let out her tears. “I don’t think I belong here, Ivy. I am lost. I just want to go home to my parents.” Tears poured down her face. Ivy embraced her tightly. “You are going to be fine, Lyra. When the time is right, you will understand perfectly. I was as confused as you are when I came here too.” Her eyes widened. “What about the white wolf I saw not quite long ago? Do they kill? Do they harm? What is the wolf looking for?” She poured out all the questions almost at the same time. “Calm down, Lyra,” Ivy whispered. Ivy’s eyes widened with shock. “Did you actually see a white wolf?” She nodded in fear. She could see Ivy trying to search her mind. “Have you seen it before?” Lyra asked. “No,” Ivy answered briefly, trying to avoid Lyra’s gaze. Just then, Professor Jason walked up to them. “Lyra and Ivy, I think you both can come into my office. You are very safe.” A silent sigh left Lyra’s mouth. She muttered, “M-Mr. Jason, please, can I ask you something?” “Go ahead,” he answered. “Why is this academy so scary? Is there something anyone isn’t telling me?” Professor Jason’s breath caught. He could see a fast figure move quickly, but he couldn’t get a glimpse of it. He knew danger was lurking around them. He pondered within himself. That can’t be the movement of a human. Hidden inside the forest, crimson eyes opened. A deep voice laughed. “Find the girl before Kaelen finds her.” Lyra’s hidden mark suddenly burned like fire. She had imagined why the intense burn had begun since she came to Corven Spire Academy. The whole academy was in chaos even the most feared professor could not do anything about it. Ivy tiptoed close to the entrance gate to know what was happening. She could hear wolves growling. The growling became nearer. Lyra screamed. “Ahh!” This time, the mark on her wrist burned more intensely than before. She couldn’t hold back the pain. She grinned almost like a scream. She clutched her wrist tightly as the mark beneath her sleeve blazed like molten fire. Before her terrified eyes, a faint golden image slowly appeared above the mark. It looked like an ancient key, covered in strange symbols which humans could not explain. She froze in fear. She had never experienced such a thing since she was born. The mark on her wrist had never glowed that brightly. The image flickered only for a heartbeat… Then vanished. Lyra stood frozen, her eyes widened in fear. “What was that?” The key vanished, yet the mark continued to glow beneath her sleeve. Lyra’s eyes gleamed. A cold voice echoed behind her. “It has finally awakened
