Lyra’s chest slammed. She looked extremely frightened over the sight of her birthmark. Ivy watched how she flinched and remained frozen for some moments. She could vividly remember that, even if she was tensed, she knew she heard a cold voice behind her. After sounding around immediately without seeing anyone for the second time, fear eluded all over her body. It sent shock towards her spine. She was confused about the whole thing at that moment.
It was a long night, but the egoless scenario ended, and some professors came to announce to all students to go back to their residence, that everything was okay. Lyra couldn’t see herself getting over that night just too quickly. She was traumatized.
It was a beautiful Friday morning after the ordeal last night. The academy didn’t seem like something had happened last night. The whole academy was bubbling with students, hurried past the hallway, laughing and chatting. The massive arena buzzed with excitement. Hundreds of students gathered across the sparring ground while instructors gave orders.
Lyra quietly slipped into the crowd, trying to avoid the crowd.
“Look, that is the girl.”
“The wolf didn’t attack her.”
“I heard it bowed to her.”
Lyra pondered, What wolf, and what bowed to her? She didn’t remember she had encountered such an incident. She searched her brain deeply, still confused because she couldn’t wrap her head around any wolf bowing to her.
She lowered her head, pretending not to hear them.
Not far away, Kaelen stood amongst the elite trainees. His bright silver eyes saw Lyra immediately she entered the arena. He couldn’t stop gazing at her. His wolf stirred uneasily inside him.
“Watch her.”
Kaelen frowned.
“Why?” he murmured, but his wolf refused to answer.
Before he realized it, his eyes had followed Lyra across the training ground.
Lyra looked up, and both their eyes met.
For a brief moment, the noise in the training arena seemed to disappear.
An unfamiliar warmth spread through Lyra’s chest.
Kaelen felt it too, but neither of them understood why.
Just then, the instructor’s booming voice went out.
“Everyone, pair up!”
Students rushed to find partners.
She tried looking for Ivy, but she was nowhere to be found.
Most students avoided her like a plague.
“She is just a mere human,” a voice said from the crowd.
She sighed.
“I guess I will be sitting out,” she thought aloud.
“You won’t.”
The deep voice came from behind.
Lyra turned.
Kaelen stood only a few feet away. His expression was calm but unreadable.
“I will be your partner.”
The students turned to look at Kaelen and the human girl he was standing with.
The whole student body was shocked.
Even the instructors were shocked.
The entire arena fell silent.
Every student stared at them in disbelief.
For years, the Alpha King, which is Kaelen, the Sovereign Lunar’s heir, had never talked to any other student apart from Ethan. And now he was standing closely with a human girl.
No one had seen Kaelen volunteer to train with anyone.
Lyra swallowed hard.
“What?”
“Yes.”
He nodded politely in acceptance.
Deep inside him, his wolf kept growling to be close to this human.
The instructor’s voice—
“Kaelen Theron pairs with Lyra Silas.”
Immediately, it jolted him out of his imagination.
He was only imagining if he could walk up to Lyra to tell her if they could be partners. The wolf inside him was trying to make him get closer to this strange girl, and just then the instructors paired them.
Every eye turned towards Kaelen and Lyra.
Ivy feared for her roommate.
The most feared Alpha, Kaelen, was being paired with her new roommate who doesn’t believe werewolves exist.
She tiptoed to where Lyra was.
When Lyra saw her, she took a breath of relief.
But the fear in her friend’s eyes made her freeze.
“What’s up, Ivy?” she whispered.
“Kaelen is the heir to the Sovereign Lunar. He is deadly and unemotional. He has been like that since the death of his father. No one dares to cross him except the person is calling out to death.”
Lyra’s eyes immediately filled with tears.
“Alpha?” she asked softly.
Dark circles curled around her eyes from the previous stress of the night.
“I don’t think I understand you clearly.”
The instructor’s voice echoed again.
“Since y’all have decided to leave some people behind, I decided to pair y’all myself.”
“Elena Frost and Rowan Brake.”
“Adam Cole and Finn Mercer.”
Ivy turned to go back to where she was assigned.
Just then, her eyes met with Kaelen.
She fidgeted in fear.
Lyra could see how Ivy gazed at him and quickly lowered her gaze.
The students whispered within themselves.
“This can’t be possible. The strongest student with the new girl.”
Another voice shot from behind.
“To think she is a mere human.”
“No way.”
Kaelen remained expressionless as he stepped forward.
Lyra’s heart skipped a beat.
For some reason she couldn’t explain, standing close to him made her heart quicken.
Kaelen noticed it too.
There was something familiar about her presence.
Not her face.
Not her voice.
But something deeper.
Something his wolf recognized when his mind could not.
“Take your positions,” the instructor ordered.
A cool breeze swept across the arena.
For a long time, neither of them moved.
Kaelen broke the silence first.
“Are you afraid?”
Lyra lifted her chin.
“No.”
“Good.”
His voice was calm but almost challenging.
“Because I won’t underestimate you.”
The instructor raised his hand.
“Begin.”
Lyra reached first.
She darted forward, aiming a quick strike towards Kaelen’s shoulder.
He sidestepped with effortless precision.
She spun and attacked him again.
He blocked the strike with his forearm before taking a single step back.
The spectators watched in amazement.
“She is actually keeping up with him.”
“I thought he would end her in seconds.”
Lyra refused to back down.
She remembered all the lessons she had learned before entering the academy.
Speed.
Balance.
Timing.
Kaelen’s wolf refused to hurt her for some unknown reason.
Lyra tried drifting towards Kaelen by sweeping his legs off the ground.
Kaelen jumped back just in time.
“Not bad.”
Lyra frowned.
“Don’t smile yet.”
Lyra charged again.
This time, Kaelen finally moved on the offensive.
He was so fast that it was impossible for Lyra to follow.
Within seconds, he was behind her.
Lyra’s eyes widened.
She turned quickly, but her foot caught on uneven ground.
She stumbled forward.
Before she could hit the ground, a strong arm wrapped around her waist.
Kaelen caught her.
For a heartbeat, neither of them moved.
Their eyes locked.
Lyra could hear the steady heartbeat.
Kaelen could feel the warmth radiating from her.
The birthmark on Lyra’s hand flared with silver light.
It glowed so brightly that everyone was stunned by what caused such a silver glow.
They all looked shocked.
Kaelen’s wolf stirred violently inside him.
His breath became uneven.
He quickly let go of Lyra.
His wolf remained restless, refusing to calm.
His wolf growled inside him.
He felt every bit of his human skin was shattering.
Suddenly, one of the students let out a scream.
The whole student body turned to the direction where the scream came from.
Their breath caught.
They froze as they all stared at Lyra’s wrist.
A pillar of silver light erupted from Lyra’s birthmark, tearing through the sky.
A loud crack echoed across the academy.
The invisible barrier protecting the academy flickered.
Once.
Twice.
The Headmaster’s face turned pale.
“No…”
A distant howl echoed from afar.
Another answered it.
Then dozens more.
For the first time in years, fear crossed his face.
“They are coming.”
