That day, she woke up really refreshed without someone or an alarm having to wake her up. Her eyes blinked, adjusting to the light as a yawn stretched her mouth open. Her arms did the same, flying upwards and stretching the muscles.
A smile made her way to her lips. Who doesn’t like a good sleep? She was almost going to forget about who she was with and why she was there. In her mind, it was ‘work more, leave quicker’. She couldn’t wait to leave them and then complain to her friends about how weird that family was.
She got up, throwing the blanket aside and heading towards the mirror. She thought she looked the best in the morning. Eyes wide with a glint and her skin looked awesome, too bad she had to wash her face. She shrugged to a random idea crossing her mind and made her way to the bathroom. It took every urge she had not to fill the bath up and have fun, yet she chose to shower quickly. After finishing, she heard a knock on the door. Groaning in annoyance, she swung it open and looked with pure boredom at the person outside.
A silent gasp left her mouth as she saw Bessie, the grandmother standing outside her room. She had a bright red Tupperware in her shaking hands, a smile from ear to ear. As always, she was dressed in a long skirt with colorful waves and a plain blouse, making her look like she just got out of a circus.
“Yeee! My beautiful daughter in law is finally awake, I brought you some cooookies” She giggled loudly, moving Avery aside with her right arm and entering the room excitedly as she shook her shoulders from side to side. She went to the end of the room and sat on one of the yellow loveseats beside the window. She put the Tupperware on the round table. Her eyes scattered around the room and observed every object carefully. She frowned a bit as she saw the black walls but said nothing then averted her eyes to Avery. Her eyes slowly brightened up as she took in the younger woman's outfit.
“I’m not your daughter in law, I’m just his personal assistant!” Calmly said Avery, trying not to freak out over what the old woman had planned already. Her marrying James?! A man older than her father who was already married and had three kids, then she understood what people meant about some old people having Dementia. 'Poor woman' she thought.
She sighed deeply and sat in front of her. What was in the Tupperware? Could it be something tasty or weird just like her? Was it even for her?
Catching her staring, a grin lit up her wrinkled face and her hands shook forward, pointing at the box. “Chocolate homemade cookies, my recipe.” She giggled as her hands slapped her own legs as a sort of a way to clap.
Before taking one, she raised the box to Bessie, inviting her to take one, her mother had taught her to always respect the elders no matter who they were. After she did so, it was Avery’s time to taste them. She observed them as she took a bite. They were a light brown with melted dark chocolate chips decorating them and a few had white sprinkles on top. She did not pick those, avoiding the extra sugar and moaned at the delightful taste. Surprisingly, for the first time, she had liked something sweet, probably since they were similar to those her mother liked. Though the ones Ashley used to have had a lemon flavor added to them.
“It tastes amazing Mrs. Lueders!” She exclaimed.
“Oh no my dear, no formalities, call me Grandma Beth, just like your husband does.” Her eyes sparkled, pointing with her head to the side. Avery scowled and looked at the door. There, Ezra was leaning on the wall, a funny expression covering his face. Their eyes met, both having the same feeling. Them, married? It was like they both were communicating through their eyes…for the second time.
‘I would rot single but not marry you!’
‘Oh my! How will I survive your rejection?!’
They both didn’t know if the other was thinking the same, but they both got the other’s message. Their eyes rolled as both their heads spun to the old lady.
“We’re not married” They argued. Avery had thought she was talking about her and James not his son. It was a bit of a pleasure she didn’t try to set her up with the old man but chose a younger one, it would be hell to let her boss think she had set her eyes on him and his mother had caught on to that.
Beth widened her eyes as she looked at them with pure confusion. “Then why are you here?” She questioned, her voice loud and stern, filled with curiosity.
“Because I work for Mr. Lueders, your son” She answered, taking another cookie and biting into it. Who would have thought she would like a kind of sweets that much? The only kind she liked were the ice creams she had with her friends at the river, they were flavored lemon of course, her favorite. That time, she frowned a little, the white sprinkles were too sweet for her liking.
The old woman nodded at her in interest. “Where is the little brat?” She inquired grumpily, tilting her head to Ezra.
Avery chuckled silently, staring at him. He looked used to her calling his brother like that as he made no reaction and just replied. “My room” She knew the two were close, Time never left his brother’s side and always stayed by him like a little minion, while he was not working obviously. “Anyways, I have some work questions to ask Ms. Emelcourt, my assistant is taking a break, he broke his leg” He mentioned, surprising her. He needed her help? Wow. Well, time to get back at him for annoying her. She thought.
“Sure Mr. Lueders” She smirked. After she excused herself from the grandma and the three of them left her room, they parted ways with Bessie and headed to his office. It was the first time she would enter it, she was wondering what it would look like. From his clothes, she was sure it must be black and white. She liked both colors but most people used them for offices, time for someone to make a change.
“You need me, eh?” She teased while he was opening the door. Ignoring her, he walked straight to the computer. A few minutes later, his arm raised up and with his finger, he ushered for her to come stand beside his chair.
She walked there with an eyeroll and stared at the screen, trying to guess what was the problem. She raised a questioning eyebrow and turned to him. As always, he was already gazing at her. She controlled the urge to roll her eyes again, seeing him open his mouth to speak.
“Can you please explain what I have to do? I don’t understand the questions I have to fill.” He said, his voice slow, deep and resonated. She took in a deep breath, ignoring her thoughts and focusing on the work. Her eyes roamed the screen, reading the questions carefully. She noticed him stand up and walk to the side. Suddenly, she felt both his hands grasp her waist and pull her down. She let out a gasp, staring at him.
“I thought it was rude of me to let you stand, my lady” He smiled teasingly. She stayed silent, looking back at him. When would he stop giving her that intense look he had? It took everything in her not to jump up and give him a kiss. She was there for his father, but why was it that every time something happened, she found herself with him?
“We both know you brought me here for something else, Mr. Lueders.” She managed to whisper out in a hush. He was leaning down to her, his hands resting on the chair arm as his face was inches away from hers. Their colognes were mixing together, forming into one scent and spreading throughout the office room. His hands gripped the leather, controlling himself from the same thing.
“And we both know you came for the same reason.”
Their voices were not any louder than a whisper, their eyes were doing most of the conversation. They both knew what the other was thinking, they both wanted the same thing. They were grown adults, there was nothing to stop them except the fact that they did not like each other’s guts and his father, she was working for his father. It could lead her to get fired if James ever came to know about what was going to happen between the duo.
With each reminder, they got closer, doing the opposite from what they were telling their inner selves not to. His right hand traveled up her arm, going slowly up towards her neck. He graced the soft skin between his fingers, his eyes never leaving hers. His cold hand upon her warm skin had her in shivers. She took in a deep breath, looking down at his parted lips. His warm breath touching her chin was warming her up.
Her lips parted. Her hands raised up, resting on his chest. He took it as a sign that she wanted it, though all she was starting to do was back him away before anything happened.
“We should...st-“
Two of his fingers raised and closed her mouth, blocking it from letting out more words. “Shhh” he muttered out. “Don’t.”
It was all she needed for her to give in to her desire. Her hands sneaked up to his cold cheeks, rubbing them with her thumbs. She leaned closer, him doing the same. Their eyes met again, both staring into the other's soul. Her hazel eyes was all he could see. It was a doubt he had if he had ever looked into those irises before, warm and bright.
As they were almost touching, the door suddenly flew open and entered someone hurriedly. They both backed away from each other, breathless. He looked angrily at who dared stop the thing he wanted most from happening. His eyes filled with regret as he spotted Time, his younger brother. He didn’t want him to see that. Avery was still in shock, putting pieces of the puzzle in her mind and realizing what she was about to do. With shaky hands, she helped herself stand up and immediately passed through the young boy, almost running to her room, not even noticing him.
Ezra hissed, slapping the desk. “What is it?” He grumbly asked, slumping down on his chair. His hand went through his hair as a technique to calm himself down. His breath was hard, eyes traveling everywhere avoiding his little brother.
“Uh-“ The little boy was standing in bewilderment, staring in surprise at his older brother. “Y-you like her!” He said in disbelief. The look on his face gave Ezra betrayal vibes. He scowled, straightening up and walking forwards to the office's door.
“What?” He mentioned in confusion. “No I don’t!” He defended himself as he stared down at him.
“Yes you do. You and father like her!” He cried out. If he was wearing his glasses, he could have really noticed the tears in his little brother’s eyes.
“Timmy what are you talking about?” He said, concern lacing his voice as he leaned down to his level. “Father doesn’t like Ms. Emelcourt just like I don’t. Ignore what you just saw, it was a mistake I was going to do without thinking” He lied trying as hard as he could to block his thoughts from taking control and making him go there and do what he was interrupted from.
“S-so you aren’t going to stop loving me because of her?” He gave him an innocent look, looking uncertain with a hint of fear in his big eyes.
Ezra scowled. His brother sometimes surprised him with his overthinking and strange ideas. He was the person he loved the most and it was always going to stay that why. Why did his brother always doubt himself? He was clearly jealous of Avery, but why? Was it because she was going to get to spend time with their father more than they do or because he was scared they would forget about him?
“Sweetheart, no. You’re my brother and I see you as a best friend and like a son to me. I would never love someone more than you and plus this is a secret but father does not like Avery at all.” He whispered the last part, making Time laugh.
“So father doesn’t but you do!” He teased, running backwards as he waved and closed the door not giving his brother to react.
Ezra sighed, rubbing his temples, feeling a headache on the way. His brother’s question left him with too many thoughts. Did he like Avery? Since she came, he was not able to focus on work and that desire to kiss her proved what he had said wrong. Did he really have feelings for his father’s assistant? ...He hoped not.
