The first thing the archive showed us was a child running. Not a vision exactly. More the way memory surfaces when you are not looking for it directly, the image arriving in the room’s atmosphere like something remembered by the walls themselves. A child, small and fast, with amber eyes and the particular fearlessness of someone who has not yet learned to be afraid of what they are. Yseult’s child. Caelan made a sound that was barely sound at all. The image did not linger.
