Alek didn't come to my room that night. I should have known he wouldn’t when he didn’t promise to return. Still, each time I opened my door, I’d find Nico’s broad back standing guard, motionless, staring out at nothing. Every time I asked what he was doing, he’d just say, “Nothing. Call me if you need anything.” After three days in this mansion, I finally get a call from Serena.
