He says nothing is going on. He has always said that, and though I hold on to my skepticism, I’ve mostly believed him. But now, I don’t know what to think. If there’s nothing going on, then why does he want Katya by his side instead of me? When he was in pain, my name wasn’t the one he called. My hand wasn’t the one he held. And yet, he insists, nothing is going on. Aleksei must really think I’ll tolerate everything. That he can throw out a single word and make me obey. If I let this pass without a real explanation, I’ll become a doormat. Aleksei, Irina, Katya, they’ll all keep walking over me and getting away with it. Tonight, I’m going to get my explanation. I’ll sneak into Aleksei’s room and wait until he returns, because I know when he says, we’ll talk later, he really means never. B
