The missing girl

Chapter Two: The Missing Girl The morning air was thick with tension. I barely slept after that voicemail. My mind kept replaying it—Sam’s voice, cold and robotic, as if she already knew something bad was coming. I tried calling her again. Still straight to voicemail. By the time I got to campus, something felt off. The usual morning buzz was muted. People huddled in small groups, whispering. Then I saw her—Elena Carter, Sam’s roommate, standing frozen near the main hall, phone in hand, face pale. I walked up to her. “Elena, have you seen Sam?” She blinked at me, her grip tightening around her phone. Her hands were shaking. “She’s missing.” Her voice cracked. “Sam’s gone.” A chill ran down my spine. “What do you mean, ‘gone’?” I demanded. “Did she leave a note? Say anything?” Elena shook her head, her breath coming in shallow gasps. “She never came back last night. I thought she was with you.” My stomach twisted. That damn voicemail. Before I could respond, a voice cut through the air. “She was last seen with him.” We both turned. A girl from the journalism department, Nina Bryant, stared at us, arms crossed. She had a reputation for getting the juiciest gossip first. “With who?” I asked, already dreading the answer. Her lips curled into a smirk. “Who else? Nathan Cross.” Everything inside me went still. Nathan Cross. The bad boy of Westbridge. A name whispered in dark corners, a face you didn’t forget. He was trouble—rumored to be part of illegal underground fights, secret deals, and things no one dared to speak of. And now people were saying Sam was with him last night—the night she vanished. My heart pounded.
