Chapter Seven: The Chase Begins
Bang. Bang. Bang.
The knocking was slow, deliberate—not a friendly knock.
Nathan’s eyes darkened as he pulled me back from the door, pressing a finger to his lips. Stay quiet.
My heart pounded in my chest. Who was out there?
Nathan moved quickly, crossing the room to the window. He peeked through the blinds, his expression hardening. “We need to go. Now.”
I swallowed. “Who is it?”
He didn’t answer. Instead, he grabbed my wrist and yanked me toward the window. “You trust me?”
“Not really,” I admitted.
His smirk was sharp. “Good. Hold on tight.”
Before I could ask what he meant, he pushed the window open and climbed out.
I hesitated for half a second—then the door handle rattled.
Someone was trying to get in.
I scrambled after Nathan, my breath catching as I stepped onto the narrow ledge outside. We were three stories up. One wrong move, and we’d break every bone in our bodies.
Nathan didn’t hesitate. He climbed onto the metal fire escape and helped me across.
The moment I set foot on the platform, the dorm door burst open behind us.
I glanced back.
Two men in dark suits stepped inside, their faces shadowed. They weren’t students. They weren’t normal.
Nathan grabbed my hand and pulled me down the fire escape. “Move!”
We clattered down the metal stairs, my pulse racing.
The men shouted. Then I heard the sound of gunfire.
A bullet tore through the air, slamming into the railing beside me. I let out a sharp scream, nearly slipping.
Nathan cursed. “Faster!”
We hit the ground running. I didn’t look back. I didn’t want to see how close they were.
Nathan led me across campus, cutting through the shadows, moving like he had done this a thousand times before.
We didn’t stop running until we reached the parking lot behind the abandoned student center.
Nathan finally slowed, breathing hard. “We lost them. For now.”
I bent over, gasping for air. “What the hell was that?”
Nathan’s expression was grim. “The Brotherhood’s enforcers.”
I stared at him. “They shot at us.”
“They don’t play games,” he said simply. “And now? You’re officially a target, too.”
My stomach twisted. “What do we do now?”
Nathan pulled out the letter from Sam, pointing to the numbers.
“Sam left us coordinates. Whatever she found—it’s waiting for us.”
I took a shaky breath. If we followed her trail, we might save her. Or we might end up just like her.
I looked at Nathan. “Are you sure we can trust her clues?”
His gaze met mine. “We don’t have a choice.”
I swallowed hard. We had to move fast.
Before The Brotherhood finished what they started.
