Dear Lucille,
There is only one way to stand up to a bully. We’re not talking about the kind of person who listens to reason or who respects any kind of authority. Guys like that respect strength and they bow only to blunt force. I see it every day.
It’s really simple. I’m sure Jack knows. When it’s self-defense, the rules don’t apply. It’s wrong for them to come at you. It’s wrong for them to hit you, whether it’s provoked or unprovoked. (Guys get drunk, they ignore all the rules, but that’s the way some are. Human nature won’t change anytime soon.)
If you get hit, you hit back with everything you’ve got, with anything you can find. There’s no decision to make when you’re afraid for your life. Every living creature has the God-given right to do whatever is necessary to survive.
