As Keiko was washing up, Eli stayed behind with Bones in the embalming room. “I think it would be a good idea for Keiko to stay here with us, don’t you?” “Ask her,” Eli shrugged. “What was it with you guys?” Bones asked. “You got history?” “You could say that. Somehow, I didn’t live up to expectations. But I guess she’s not letting it stand in the way.” “She can have my bed. I’ll take the couch.” Eli was irked. “How was that not a possibility when it was just me moving in?” “Give up my bed for you? Besides, casket room is a reality check for you. Me, I deal with it every day. I don’t talk about it much. Who would want to hear? But I can’t look at you – I can’t look at anybody – without thinking about a writhing mass of stinking guts.
