When the car reached Greenwood Heights, Elena felt a bit stifled and wanted to take a walk.
Their villa was at No. 6, just a kilometer away, about a ten-minute walk.
After getting out of the car, Elena looked up at the sky. "The moon is really beautiful tonight."
Chris also looked up. "Indeed."
The greenery in the Greenwood Heights villa area was well-maintained, with tall trees surrounding the area. The villas were hidden behind the trees, and the lights flickered through the leaves, exuding a faint warmth.
Walking along the path, there was a sense of a quiet, secluded retreat.
The two walked side by side, and even the night breeze seemed gentler.
Elena brushed a strand of hair behind her ear and asked softly, "Should we have a meal with the Patrick family?"
"No rush. We'll wait until you're more comfortable before introducing you to them. Otherwise, you might feel uneasy."
Elena looked at him in surprise. "Wouldn't that seem impolite?"
"No." Chris smiled. "I've already informed them in advance. My dad understands."
"Actually, I'm not afraid."
"I know. I'm just worried you might not feel comfortable."
Elena's cheeks flushed slightly. Fortunately, it was nighttime, so it wasn't too noticeable.
"You're quite good at sweet-talking, aren't you?"
Chris raised an eyebrow, his expression calm. "Am I? You're the first person to compliment me on that."
When he said this, he was calm and collected, always giving off an air of stability and reliability, with a touch of unintentional warmth.
Elena smiled lightly. "Should I compliment you more often then?"
"Better not."
"Why?"
"If Mrs. Patrick compliments me too much, what if I can't live without you one day?"
Elena was momentarily stunned and turned her head to pretend to look at the trees along the road. "We're already married. Why would you leave me?"
"It was wrong of me to say that," Chris replied gently. "Then you should praise me more. After all, I can't live without you now."
Elena felt a bit warm and responded with a soft "mm."
Suddenly, her hand was enveloped by a large palm.
Their fingers intertwined, and the warmth from his skin slowly spread, causing Elena's heartbeat to gradually quicken. But she didn't feel any dislike.
In fact, Elena didn't like public displays of affection. Being too physically close would make her feel a sense of aversion.
This feeling was something she couldn't control.
In the early days, Brian had tried to get close to her, but she had resisted, leading to a few arguments.
Brian even thought there was something wrong with her and suggested she see a therapist.
Elena did see a therapist, who told her she was fine, just that her sense of personal space was too strong and she hadn't fully accepted the other person.
Reflecting on the therapist's words now, Elena suddenly realized something.
Maybe she didn't like Brian that much after all.
Chris noticed Elena's expressions shifting between frowning and relaxing, as if she were wrestling with something.
"What are you thinking about?"
Chris's voice brought Elena back to reality, and she instinctively responded, "I was wondering why I don't dislike your touch."
As soon as she said it, a faint embarrassment began to spread from her heart.
Elena maintained a calm smile on the surface, but her toes curled in embarrassment.
A shadow passed through Chris's eyes. "So, whose touch do you dislike?"
Elena fell silent.
She had been honest with Chris about her family matters to avoid any hidden problems in the future.
But discussing her ex-fiancé with her current husband... Elena wasn't about to stir up unnecessary trouble.
Just then, a faint "meow" broke the silence, rescuing Elena from the awkward situation.
"Did you hear something?"
Chris: "A cat's meow."
Elena looked around and spotted a small box in the bushes by the roadside.
Upon closer inspection, she found a tiny Ragdoll kitten inside, looking barely a month old, with innocent big eyes that could melt anyone's heart.
The box was filled with various items.
Elena squatted down to look and found the box contained the kitten's health certificate, vaccination record, a small bag of cat food, a cat bowl, litter, and various other essentials.
"Whose cat could have been left here?"
Chris: "It could have been abandoned."
"But who would abandon a kitten and still prepare everything so thoughtfully?"
Elena didn't even recognize all the items in the box.
She looked around and saw that the villa at No. 4 was just five meters away, with the lights still on in the second-floor window.
Elena vaguely saw a figure near the floor-to-ceiling window.
Just as she was about to take a closer look, the lights on the second floor were suddenly turned off.
Elena: "... Could this be the cat from that house?"
"Let's go ask."
Chris wasn't very familiar with the villa owners in the area since he didn't come here often.
After ringing the doorbell at No. 4, a housekeeper wearing an apron quickly answered.
Elena held the kitten, with Chris standing behind her holding the box. "Hello, is this your cat?"
The housekeeper glanced at it and shook her head firmly. "No."
"Are you sure?"
The housekeeper insisted, "No, we don't have any cats."
Just then, a cat's meow sounded from behind her.
The housekeeper awkwardly smiled. "It's really not our cat. You can ask around if it belongs to someone else."
With that, she closed the door.
Elena held the kitten and quietly looked at Chris.
Seeing her hopeful, clear eyes, Chris's heart softened long before.
"If you want to keep it, let's take it home."
"Are you allergic to cats?"
"No."
Elena was indeed very tempted, as this Ragdoll kitten was just too adorable.
She had wanted to have a cat for a long time, but Brian was allergic, so it had always been out of the question.
Now, with a kitten falling from the sky, it was as if it was deliberately tugging at Elena's heartstrings.
Elena gently stroked the kitten, her eyes curved with delight. "Let's help find its owner first. Maybe the owner accidentally lost it? If no one claims it, we'll keep it, okay?"
"Okay."
Chris's deep voice was full of indulgence.
That night when they got home, the smile never left Elena's face.
Chris watched as she spoke softly to the kitten, and his deep eyes were filled with warmth.
As soon as they got home, Elena quickly joined the homeowners' group chat, asking if anyone had lost a cat.
Only one or two people replied no, while others simply read the message without responding.
After discussing it with Chris, she decided to let the kitten temporarily stay in the room opposite the master bedroom.
Turning around, she saw Chris holding a painting given by Old Master Quant and a check.
He naturally handed the check to Elena, holding up the painting and asking, "Should we keep this or hang it up?"
Elena held the check, feeling a bit at a loss but still answered Chris's question first.
"Hang it up. The villa feels a bit empty, and it could use some decoration."
Elena lowered her head. "Why are you giving me the check?"
"Over to you," Chris said calmly. "From now on, Mrs. Patrick will be in charge of the family's finances."
With that, he led Elena into the study.
