THIRTY-TWOETCHED INTO THE SIDE of Table Mountain lies a famous stretch of road called Chapman’s Peak Drive, sometimes called the most beautiful road on earth. It crawls its way along the skirt of the mountain, giving breathtaking views of the edge of the earth, sunsets and sunrises, beaches, harbors, villas in the distance and rocks and breaking surf below. Only one property—a hotel—stood below this road, a place called Mazibongwe Atlantic.
This hotel was literally set at the foot of Table Mountain, oceanside on its own little stretch of private beach, almost at the tip of the African continent. It catered to the most well-to-do of tourists and visitors—politicians and celebrities and sports stars have vacationed there for almost a century.
