FORTY-THREE“OKAY, SECOND FLOOR,” I said as I opened the door from the outside. Usually when people book into a hotel like this, they always come to check the balcony—then almost never lock the balcony door again. Like this one. I entered the room through closed curtains and into the darkness beyond. “Some people just went to their rooms way on the opposite end, but there’s a woman coming down the hallway in your direction now, by herself.” I switched on a lamp by the bedside to have a quick look at my appearance.
